Course and characteristics of work disability 3 years before and after lumbar spine decompression surgery- a national population-based study.

Despite decompression surgery being a widespread intervention for patients with dorsopathies (i.e. back pain) affecting the lumbar spine, the scientific knowledge on patterns and characteristics of work disability before and after the surgery is limited. Sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) were examined three years before and after surgery in 8558 patients aged 25-60 years who underwent lumbar spine decompression surgery in Sweden. They were compared to individuals with diagnosed dorsopathies but no surgery and individuals from the general population as matched comparison groups.

Substance Use, Health, and Functioning Characteristics of Medical Marijuana Program Participants Compared to the General Adult Population in Ontario (Canada).

Existent profiles of Medical Marijuana Program (MMP) participants indicate common and co-morbid chronic diseases, yet evidence on disability or functioning as well as comparisons with general populations are largely lacking. This study compared health, substance use, and functioning status among formally approved MMP participants with the general adult population in Ontario (Canada). A community-recruited sample (n = 53) of MMP participants was compared to a sub-sample (n = 510) of the representative Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Monitor (2015 cycle) survey of Ontario general p

Youth characteristics associated with behavioral and mental health problems during the transition to residential treatment centers: the Odyssey Project population.

This study aimed to determine what youth characteristics were associated with emotional and behavioral problems exhibited within the first three months of placement in residential treatment centers (RTCs) in a sample of youth from 20 agencies in 13 states. Two primary research questions were addressed: 1) What characteristics were associated with behavior during the transition to care? 2) Were the characteristics associated with behavior during the transition the same for boys and girls? Data were drawn from the Time 1 phase of the longitudinal national Odyssey Project dataset developed by the

Residential history, family characteristics and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a population-based case-control study in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A population-based, case-control study (N = 1,593 cases, N = 2,515 controls) was conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, to determine risk factors for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). This report examines residential characteristics, number of siblings, childhood infections, and allergic rhinitis to evaluate the association between NHL and the hygiene hypothesis. Adjusted unconditional logistic regression analyses included HIV-negative participants (N = 1,304 cases, N = 2,402 controls) ages 21 to 74 years, who completed in-person interviews. At childhood ages, odds ratios (OR) for NHL

Demographic and familial characteristics of HTLV-1 infection among an isolated, highly endemic population of African origin in French Guiana.

To determine the epidemiological characteristics of human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) infection in the endemic village of Maripasoula, French Guiana, 1,614 persons (83.2% of the population) aged 2 to 91 years (mean age 21) were studied from November 1994 through April 1995. Plasma samples were screened by an HTLV-I ELISA and an IFA test (on MT2 cells), and positive samples were tested by an HTLV-I and -II type-specific Western blot. Overall seropositivity in the village was 6.7%, but HTLV-I infection was restricted to 3 of 6 ethnic groups, including the Noir-Marron (descenda

Clinical characteristics and prognosis of acute myeloid leukemia and plasma cell neoplasms with bidirectional occurrence: a retrospective population-based study.

The bidirectional occurrence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and plasma cell neoplasms (PCN) is rare, and clinical characteristics and survival outcomes remain poorly defined. We conducted a retrospective population-based study using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2000-2022). Patients diagnosed with both AML and PCN were identified and categorized based on diagnostic sequence. Overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier methods and Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for demographic and clinical variables. Th

Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome: Clinical characteristics and outcomes in a non-caucasian population - A five-year experience from a single centre.

BackgroundCatastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome (CAPS) is a rare but highly severe manifestation of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), occurring in fewer than 1% of APS patients, but is associated with mortality of around 25-37%, despite treatment. It is characterized by rapid onset of widespread thrombotic events leading to microangiopathy, intravascular thrombosis with multiorgan failure, involving three or more organs within one week. Most published data originate from European or multinational registries like the CAPS Registry. However, data on CAPS in Latin American populations, who may di

Identifying characteristics of people with bullous pemphigoid prior to diagnosis using clustering analysis: a UK population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a rare, serious autoimmune skin disease that is more common in older people. Numerous drugs and conditions have been previously associated with BP, but no study has explored patterns of risk factors. It is important to identify characteristics of people at risk of BP to help raise clinical suspicion. Diagnostic delay can lead to serious symptoms and poor quality of life. OBJECTIVES: To identify patterns of drug prescriptions, comorbidities and sociodemographic characteristics of people with BP prior to diagnosis. METHODS: We conducted a 1 : 1 case-contr

Prevalence trends, population characteristics and treatment outcomes of tuberculosis combined with diabetes in Southwest China: a register-based retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The global situation regarding the prevention and control of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains challenging. With the ongoing aging population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, the epidemic of comorbid pulmonary tuberculosis and diabetes mellitus (PTB-DM) presents challenges to PTB control. We conducted this study given that current research on PTB-DM has primarily focused on clinical medicine and immunology, with limited reports on the true prevalence of population-wide PTB-DM in specific regions, as well as the heightened risk of PTB-DM co-prevalence due to agi
