[Sandflies in an areas with occurrences of human cases of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the municipality of Seropédica, State of Rio de Janeiro].

American cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, which affects the skin and mucosa. It is primarily a zoonotic infection. Sandfly surveys were conducted in four areas with occurrences of human cases of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the municipality of Seropédica. A manual method was used to catch specimens between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm, for 12 consecutive months. From October 2004 to September 2005, we caught 2,390 individuals belonging to four species: Lutzomyia intermedia accounted for 97.1% of the total collected, followed by Lutzomyia whitmani (1.6%), Lu

Shifts in the distributional ranges of Boophilus ticks in Tanzania: evidence that a parapatric boundary between Boophilus microplus and B. decoloratus follows climate gradients.

Based on a national tick survey conducted in Tanzania between 1998 and 2001, predictive maps of tick distribution for B. microplus and B. decoloratus were computed and compared with historical maps that originated about 40 years ago. The new data collected showed that except for extremely cold and dry areas B. microplus has extended its distribution range and is now present in all the northern regions of Tanzania, and that high suitability is currently recorded for most of the previously non-occupied areas. In contrast, B. decoloratus, once abundant in Tanzania, has largely retreated to highla

Multiple causes of variable tick burdens on small-mammal hosts.

Blood meals by blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) on vertebrate hosts serve to transmit the agents of several zoonotic diseases, including Lyme disease, human babesiosis, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis, between host and tick. If ticks are aggregated on hosts, a small proportion of hosts may be responsible for most transmission events. Therefore, a key element in understanding and controlling the transmission of these pathogens is identifying the group(s) or individuals feeding a disproportionate number of ticks. Previous studies of tick burdens, however, have focused on differences in

Inventarisation of natural enemies in witloof chicory fields: preliminary results.

Due to residues on the witloof chicory heads the use of insecticides is forbidden during forcing. At this moment a suitable chemical control of the leafminer Napomyza cichorii is carried out in the field, based on the phenology and the population density and taking into account the economic threshold level. No chemical treatment is recognized against the root aphid Pemphigus bursarius. For monitoring these pests during the growing season water traps were placed on observation fields, scattered over the Belgian endive production area. The large numbers and the wide variety of other insects caug…

Localized deer absence leads to tick amplification.

Deer support high tick intensities, perpetuating tick populations, but they do not support tick-borne pathogen transmission, so are dilution hosts. We test the hypothesis that absence of deer (loss of a dilution host) will result in either an increase or a reduction in tick density, and that the outcome is scale dependent. We use a complementary methodological approach starting with meta-analysis, followed up by a field experiment. Meta-analysis indicated that larger deer exclosures reduce questing (host-seeking) tick density, but as the exclosure becomes smaller (<2.5 ha) the questing tick de

Ixodes scapularis ticks collected by passive surveillance in Canada: analysis of geographic distribution and infection with Lyme borreliosis agent Borrelia burgdorferi.

Passive surveillance for the occurrence of the tick Ixodes scapularis Say (1821) and their infection with the Lyme borreliosis spirochaetes Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. has taken place in Canada since early 1990. Ticks have been submitted from members of the public, veterinarians, and medical practitioners to provincial, federal, and university laboratories for identification, and the data have been collated and B. burgdorferi detected at the National Microbiology Laboratory. The locations of collection of 2,319 submitted I. scapularis were mapped, and we investigated potential risk factors for I

Resistance to Rhopalosiphum padi (Homoptera: Aphididae) in three triticale accessions.

Experiments were conducted to identify and characterize host plant resistance to bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), in various wheat and wheat-grass hybrids. Initial tests screened for resistance to R. padi among 12 grass accessions (eight wheat [Triticum aestivum L.], three triticale [XTriticosecale Wittmack], and 1XElytricum [Elytrigia elongata [Host] Nevski x Triticum aestivum hybrid]). R. padi had less population growth on triticale accessions '8TA5L' (PI 611760) and 'Stniism 3' (PI 386156) than on other accessions, but nymphiposition by R. padi did not differ among the 12 acc

Earthworm additions affect leachate production and nitrogen losses in typical midwestern agroecosystems.

Earthworms affect soil structure and the movement of agrochemicals. Yet, there have been few field-scale studies that quantify the effect of earthworms on dissolved nitrogen fluxes in agroecosystems. We investigated the influence of semi-annual earthworm additions on leachate production and quality in different row crop agroecosystems. Chisel-till corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotation (CT) and ridge-till corn-soybean-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) rotation (RT) plots were arranged in a complete randomized block design (n = 3) with earthworm treatments (addition and ambient

[Seasonal distribution of malaria vectors in Machadinho d'Oeste, Rondônia State, Amazon Region, Brazil].

The objective of this study was to describe the seasonal distribution of malaria vectors in Machadinho d'Oeste, Rondônia State, Brazil. The study was based on data from the Brazilian National Health Foundation (FUNASA) for the period from April 1993 to November 1994. A total of 97 field visits were conducted, and 93 intradomiciliary and 95 peridomiciliary collections were performed. The most frequently captured species in both the intra- and peridomiciles was Anopheles darlingi, followed by Anopheles triannulatus, among other species. Only An. darlingi was captured throughout the study period,

Serum and skin surface antibodies and their associations with sheep biting lice, Bovicola ovis, on experimentally infested sheep.

The sheep biting louse (Bovicola ovis) feeds superficially on the skin of sheep but appears to stimulate an immune response. In this study we examined the association between louse infestation and serum and skin surface antibodies. Louse numbers were monitored on experimentally infested Polypay and Columbia ewes for two years and on their lambs in the second year. Serum and skin wash samples were tested for antibodies to soluble extracts of B. ovis, Stomoxys calcitrans and Musca autumnalis by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, the effects of skin wash extracts on B. ovis w

Predictive map of Ixodes ricinus high-incidence habitats and a tick-borne encephalitis risk assessment using satellite data.

The main objective of this project was to predict Ixodes ricinus abundant habitats reliably as a means of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) risk assessment for the prevention of this disease. The vegetation types were used as the indicators of an ecosystem suitable for tick occurrence, for TBE virus circulation and, accordingly, for the existence of natural foci of this infection. Remote sensing methods were used to determine the indicative plant cover. Satellite data covering an experimental area of 70 x 70 km in Central Bohemia, the Czech Republic, was acquired by the Landsat 5 TM scanner. Nine

[Malaria in the Saharan region of Senegal. 1. Entomological transmission findings].

An 18 months longitudinal survey on the entomological aspects of the transmission of malaria has been carried out in a village practising rice field irrigation and in another village with traditional rain water agriculture. Both are located in the Sahelian area of the Senegal river central valley, in Senegal. The study is based on mosquito samples caught on human baits. The vectors A. arabiensis and A. gambiae could be found all year long in the village with rice field irrigation, but only during the rainy season in the other village distant from the rice field area. The average aggressive den

Using satellite data to forecast the occurrence of the common tick Ixodes ricinus (L.).

To forecast the incidence of the common tick, Ixodes ricinus, the authors used the finding that some types of vegetation may indicate the presence of the tick. To obtain the necessary information in a scope which would enable its practical application in medicine to prevent populational exposure to ticks, remote sensing data were utilized as obtained from the Multispectral Scanner operating aboard Landsat 5. A file was selected from the full scene representing a territory which measured 41 by 41 kilometers and in the centre of which there was an area known to have consistently high tick number

Estimating the initial relative infection rate for a stochastic epidemic model.

Consider the problem of making inference about the initial relative infection rate of a stochastic epidemic model. A relatively complete analysis of infectious disease data is possible when it is assumed that the latent and infectious periods are non-random. Here two related martingale-based techniques are used to derive estimates and associated standard errors for the initial relative infection rate. The first technique requires complete information on the epidemic, the second only the total number of people who were infected and the population size. Explicit expressions for the estimates are

Suncus murinus. Observations on ecology, distribution, status to plague in Bombay.

The common house shrew Suncus murinus has been shown to play an important role in maintenance and perpetuation of plague infection by earlier plague workers. With the control of human plague there is no knowledge about foci of plague in small mammals associated with man. Present study was carried out to fill in this Lacuna. Studies carried out in the present paper reveal that S. murinus does not harbour any plague infection in Bombay. This species is widely distributed in Bombay and is found to be associated with man throughout the year. The principal species of fleas harboured by this mammal

[Experimental deratization on a commercial swine-breeding farm].

Continuous eighth-month deratization was carried out on an industrial swine breeding complex, having great numbers of the black rat (R. rattus). Anticoagulants were chiefly used, maintaining permanent sites of poisonous baits. The lowering of rat numbers was followed up at two-month intervals in the individual productional sectors. Some indices were determined, such as intensiveness, extensiveness, and effectiveness. It was found that each of these indices characterized particular aspects of the deratization process on the complex as a whole and in the various sectors. A suggestion is made to

Ecological studies on Culex tritaeniorhynchus as a vector of Japanese encephalitis.

In the Republic of Korea, light-trap assessments and collections from cows and pigs after sunset were highly successful in monitoring the seasonal abundance of C. tritaeniorhynchus, the primary vector of Japanese encephalitis. The dates and duration of the population peaks at semirural suburbs of Seoul and Pusan were markedly different from those at a rural rice-growing site. The main breeding sites in these three areas were, respectively, swamps, marshes, and ricefields. The overall adult densities were the lowest at the rice-growing site where agricultural pesticides were extensively used. A
