Obstructive sleep apnea is frequent in patients with Long COVID fatigue but is not significantly associated with alterations of quality of life and cognition.

Neurologic manifestations of Long COVID, also called post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), include fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, sleep disturbances, and headaches, which can be debilitating. Since these symptoms overlap with those of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), we sought to determine the prevalence of OSA in the population of a Neuro-COVID-19 clinic. We performed home sleep testing in 100 consecutive patients with Long COVID and no prior history of OSA who reported fatigue after an episode of COVID-19 not requiring hospitalization. The average age was 46.4 years and 70% of p

Femoral bone mineral density reference values by sex and ethnicity: Findings from the Qatar Biobank study.

OBJECTIVES: Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a major global health concern due to fracture-related morbidity and mortality. BMD is currently assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) against a US reference population. The aim of the study was to establish an ethnicity- and sex-specific reference for calculating BMD at different femoral sites including femoral trochanter, Ward's triangle and femoral neck in Qatar. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed BMD in 4727 (2277 females and 2450 males) healthy Qatari aged between 20 and 82 years participating in the Qatar Biobank (QBB)

Changes in BNP levels from discharge to 6-month visit predict subsequent outcomes in patients with acute heart failure.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the association between changes in brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) from discharge to 6-month visit and subsequent clinical outcomes in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). METHODS: Among 1246 patients enrolled in the prospective longitudinal follow-up study nested from the Kyoto Congestive Heart Failure registry, this study population included 446 patients with available paired BNP data at discharge and 6-month index visit. This study population was classified into 3 groups by percent change in BNP from discharge to 6-month visit; the low tertil

Meckel's diverticulum in adults: seldom suspected and frequently found.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a well-defined diagnosis in children presenting with either bleeding or obstruction. Although anecdotally adult patients may present with complications from MD, their presentation seems to be different, with a reported predominance of non-bleed-related presentations. Reports in this population, however, are limited, and little is known of the epidemiology of MD in older patients. We performed a retrospective analysis of the Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality National Inpatient Sample of all US hospital discharges from 2012 to 2016. We identified patients wi

Hypertensive disease in pregnancy: an examination of ethnic differences and the Hispanic paradox.

OBJECTIVE: The "Hispanic paradox" refers to the epidemiological finding that Hispanics in the US have better health outcomes than the average population despite what their aggregate socioeconomic determinants would predict. The aim of this study was to evaluate obstetric outcomes for a multiethnic population with hypertensive diseases. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of parturients with hypertensive disease delivering at Duke University Medical Center. We analyzed maternal sociodemographic characteristics and ethnic differences in hypertensive disease types using Chi Square tests

Cohort mortality study of workers exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is persistent in the human body; the general population has serum levels of approximately 4 ng/mL. It causes tumors of the liver, pancreas, and testicles in rodents. The authors studied the mortality of 5,791 workers exposed to PFOA at a DuPont chemical plant in West Virginia, using a newly developed job exposure matrix based on serum data for 1,308 workers from 1979-2004. The estimated average serum PFOA level was 350 ng/mL. The authors used 2 referent groups: other DuPont workers in the region and the US population. In comparison with other DuPont workers, cause

One Model to Dose Them All: A Population Pharmacokinetic Model for Multiple Aminoglycosides Across the Human Lifespan.

Aminoglycosides require therapeutic drug monitoring due to substantial pharmacokinetic variability across individuals. While population pharmacokinetic (popPK) models have been developed for individual drugs across age groups, and cross-drug maturation models have been explored, it is unclear whether pooling data across aminoglycosides improves predictive performance. We developed and evaluated a unified multi-aminoglycoside popPK model spanning neonates, children, and adults. De-identified data from 5659 amikacin, gentamicin, and tobramycin patients at 154 US institutions were split into trai

Prostate cancer incidence and mortality among immigrants in Finland between 2000 and 2017 - a register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prostate cancer impacts millions of men worldwide each year, and its significance will continue to rise as populations age. Literature demonstrates differences in cancer burden between immigrant groups and non-immigrants across the world. Despite its prevalence, little research has focused primarily on prostate cancer among immigrants. PATIENTS/MATERIAL AND METHODS: We utilized individual-level data on all immigrant men who had lived in Finland for over a year between 1973 and 2017 and aggregate data on Finnish-born men to determine immigrants' incidence of and mortali

Health Communication and Social Marketing Campaigns for Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention and Control: What Is the Evidence of their Effectiveness?

BACKGROUND: Despite the ubiquity of sex in the media, a culture of silence surrounds sexual health in the United States, serving as a barrier to sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention, testing, and treatment. Campaigns can increase STD-related knowledge, communication, and protective behaviors. This review assesses the effectiveness of STD prevention and testing campaigns in the United States to inform the field on their use as a strategy for affecting behavior change. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify original research articles, published between 200

Metformin and the risk of endometrial cancer: a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: While some observational studies have suggested a protective effect of metformin on incident cancer, concerns about potential bias remain. We compared the incidence of endometrial cancer in metformin versus sulfonylurea initiators. Research design and methods We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis using US healthcare claims (MarketScan®), 2000-2011. We identified new users of metformin versus sulfonylureas with no prior cancer diagnoses and followed them until a diagnosis of endometrial cancer, hysterectomy, treatment change, or disenrollment. We estimated hazard ratios (HR) a

Public response to an anthrax attack: a multiethnic perspective.

The 2001 anthrax attacks emphasized the need to develop outreach that would more effectively support racial/ethnic minority populations during a bioterrorism incident. Given the importance of antibiotic prophylaxis in a future anthrax attack, it should be a priority to better support racial/ethnic minorities in mass dispensing programs. To examine the needs and perspectives of racial/ethnic minorities, this study used a nationally representative poll of 1,852 adults, including 1,240 whites, 261 African Americans, and 282 Hispanics. The poll examined public reactions to a ''worst-case scenario'

Point prevalence of bovine fascioliasis and the influence of chemotherapy on the milk yield in a lactating bovine population from the district of Toba Tek Singh, Pakistan.

This paper provides an estimation of the point prevalence of fascioliasis and its economic impact in terms of increased milk yield after chemotherapy of a bovine population from the district of Toba Tek Singh, Punjab, Pakistan. A total of 2400 cattle and buffaloes were examined quantitatively using the McMaster egg-counting technique. Infected cattle and buffaloes (50 of each) were randomly selected and each divided into two groups of 25 animals. Groups A (buffaloes) and C (cattle) were treated with oxyclozanide (orally, 16.6 mg kg- 1 body weight). Groups B and D served as negative controls fo

Social disparities in the burden of occupational exposures: results of a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Most occupational studies evaluate a single exposure in relation to a particular disease. However, workers typically experience multiple exposures simultaneously. There is also increasing evidence of disparities in health by sociodemographic characteristics, mostly related to social position such as gender, race/ethnicity, immigration status, income, and education. Little information exists on the worker experience of multiple occupational exposures as they vary among social groups. The objectives of this article were to: assess the burden of exposures reported within 1 year by a s

Effectiveness of cognitive interventions in healthy aging: A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis.

The global increase of the aging population poses major public health challenges, particularly due to the rising prevalence of age-related diseases. Among these, dementia stands out as a condition with the most significant health, social, and economic impact. Primary prevention in healthy aging, thus far, represents the most effective strategy to address this issue, and cognitive interventions emerge as promising tools to enhance and preserve cognitive functions over time. This study aimed to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of cognitive interventions in healthy older adults, asse

Polygenic risk score-guided personalized osteoporosis screening: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Despite robust evidence that genetic factors substantially influence both osteoporosis development and fracture risk, current screening guidelines fail to incorporate genetic factors into risk-assessment protocols. This study aims to determine personalized screening ages for osteoporosis based on polygenic risk score (PRS). METHODS: This prospective cohort study utilized data from 223,818 women in the UK Biobank, and only participants who were osteoporosis-free at baseline were included in the study. Participants were categorized into three subgroups (low, medium, and high groups)
