Identifying somatization disorder in a population-based health examination survey: psychosocial burden and gender differences.

Despite its enormous medical burden, little is known about the epidemiology of somatization in the community. The present study screened a representative population-based survey of 7,466 subjects in the age range of 25 to 69 years for the occurrence of somatization. A total of 137 (1.84%) individuals experienced six or more symptoms from at least two different body sites without an identifiable organic cause. These patients exhibited a lower quality of life (P < or = 0.0001) and suffered from higher levels of emotional stress (P < or = 0.0001) than their counterparts in the healthy subsample (

Homeostasis model assessment in a population with mixed ethnicity: the 1992 Singapore National Health Survey.

We studied insulin resistance and beta-cell function with reference to ethnic group, glucose tolerance and other coronary artery disease risk factors in a cross section of the Singapore population which comprises Chinese, Malays and Asian Indians. 3568 individuals aged 18-69 were examined. Blood pressure, anthropometric data, blood lipids, glucose and insulin were assayed in the fasting state. Glucose and serum insulin were measured 2 h after an oral glucose challenge. Insulin resistance and beta-cell function were calculated using homeostasis model assessment. Asian Indians had higher insulin

Health care utilization and costs among patients treated for bipolar disorder in an insured population.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined health care utilization and costs among patients treated for bipolar-spectrum disorders in an insured population. METHODS: Computerized data on prescriptions and on outpatient and inpatient diagnoses from a large health plan were used to identify patients treated for cyclothymia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder. Three age- and sex-matched comparison groups consisting of general medical outpatients, patients treated for depression, and patients treated for diabetes were selected from health plan members. Utilization and cost of health services for th

Health-related self-report (HRSR) scale: the diagnostic screening test for depression in Thai population.

In this study we introduced a health-related self-report (HRSR) diagnostic scale for detecting depression in Thai population. The scale composed of 20 symptom items including two objective signs (people said I look worried or sad) and previous suicidal attempt both of which were helpful in detecting and confirming depression and suicidal risk. There were 3 positive items (feel well, life is pleasant and meaningful and feel self-worth) which clearly distinguished normal subjects and depressed patients. The reliability coefficient (Chronbach's alpha) of the HRSR scale was 0.91 and was found to p

Artificial intelligence in perioperative pressure injury management: a scoping review of evidence, gaps, and implications for population health and digital public health policy.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative pressure injury (POPI) is a significant global public health challenge, contributing to substantial iatrogenic morbidity and heavy economic burden worldwide. Traditional prevention is limited by insufficient assessment tools, the "black box" nature of intraoperative monitoring, and delayed intervention. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers a novel approach by integrating multidimensional data for real-time risk prediction; however, no scoping review has systematically mapped AI applications across the full perioperative continuum from a population health perspective. …

Mental health strain due to COVID-19: Psychological distress and somatic symptoms among health care workers and the general population in Kashmir, India.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a global rise in psychological morbidities, markedly increasing depression, anxiety, and stress. This study provides early region-specific evidence from Kashmir on the post-pandemic mental health burden. Building on our prior findings of substantial psychological distress in this cohort, we examined associations between specific COVID-19 symptom profiles, symptom duration, hospitalization status, and the severity of depression, anxiety, and stress. Correlates of psychological distress were also identified. While this study uses the same

Climate variability and the emerging risks of foodborne pathogens: consequences for food safety and population health.

Climate change is increasingly recognized as key driver shaping the global epidemiology of foodborne infections, influencing pathogen dynamics, toxin production, and food system safety. This review aimed to (1) examine the impact of climate change on the occurrence, growth, and geographic distribution of foodborne pathogens; (2) assess its influence on toxin production and chemical contamination in food systems; (3) evaluate disruptions across the food value chain, including production, processing, storage, and distribution; and (4) explore population vulnerability, particularly in low- and mi

Metabolic Imprinting and Intergenerational Cardiometabolic Risk in Human Populations: Implications for Preconception and Maternal Health.

The global rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes has been too rapid to be explained by genetic change alone, which points to developmental and environmental contributions to cardiometabolic risk. Metabolic conditions during sensitive windows, particularly preconception, pregnancy, and early postnatal life, appear to shape long-term metabolic regulation and disease susceptibility. In this narrative review, we synthesise human cohort studies, natural experiments, and experimental models, and we translate the resulting evidence into clinical and public health practice. Across human cohorts, materna

The Challenges of Designing Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Health Care in Low-Income Latina Populations.

Conversational intelligent tutoring systems (CITS) have the potential to bring health education to low-income communities at scale. Although educational attainment is usually low, the health literacy spectrum within these communities can be wide. Therefore, special attention should be paid when designing and evaluating CITS within these communities. Visual, linguistic, subject matter, and cultural models must be considered. Moreover, evaluating CITS can be challenging. The instruments used to assess the impact of these systems must consider the levels of health literacy of the individuals who

Resistant starch as a dietary strategy for metabolic and gut health: Implications for Asia-Pacific populations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Metabolic diseases are rising rapidly across the Asia-Pacific region as traditional diets are displaced by refined, low-fibre foods. Resistant starch (RS) is a fermentable dietary component that modulates gut microbial activity and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, representing a promising strategy for metabolic and gut health. However, responses to RS vary according to dose, RS type, and individual context. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This narrative review synthesised evidence from animal and human studies on RS classification, food sources, microbial interac

Beyond the mind: Depersonalization and derealization as risk factors for physical health in the German general population.

BACKGROUND: Depersonalization and derealization (DP/DR) are dissociative symptoms involving a sense of unreality and detachment from one's self or surroundings. While strongly associated with psychiatric conditions, their relationship to physical health and epistemic trust-shaping how individuals integrate information and particularly fragile in dissociative states-remains underexplored. METHODS: A representative sample of 2318 individuals from the German general population completed standardized self-report instruments assessing DP/DR (DSS), adverse childhood experiences (ICAST-R), epistemic

Mapping trajectories of child and adolescent psychopathology: ascertainment of mental health needs in a general population.

AIMS: The development of psychopathology during childhood and adolescence is complex and likely to follow diverse patterns. Mapping trajectories of psychopathological difficulties may improve our understanding of the nature of emerging, resolving and persistent psychopathology. The purpose of this study is to examine trajectories of psychopathology throughout childhood and adolescence by examining multiple data sources, including questionnaire-based reports of emotional and behavioural difficulties, psychiatric diagnoses and prescribed psychotropic medications. METHODS: Group-based multi-traj

Dietary Nitrate-Rich Vegetables as Natural Modulators of Health: Mechanisms and Benefits in Ageing Populations.

Nitrate-rich vegetables are increasingly recognised as a key subgroup of phytochemical-dense foods that have significant potential for preventing and managing chronic diseases. Although dietary nitrates were historically approached with caution due to concerns about nitrosamine formation, contemporary evidence highlights their beneficial effects on vascular, metabolic and cognitive functions. Ageing is characterised by endothelial dysfunction, impaired nitric oxide (NO) synthesis and increased oxidative stress, which elevates cardiovascular risk. In this context, nitrate-rich vegetables offer

Mental health disparities in LGBTQIA+ populations: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) populations face unique social, political, psychological and health care-related challenges that contribute to marked mental health disparities. However, the overall strength and credibility of evidence across mental disorders, mental disorder-related symptomatology, suicidal or self-harm behaviors, and access to mental health care have not been systematically assessed in these populations. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses (SRMAs) of observational studies investigating mental

Digital health in managing type 2 diabetes among indigenous populations: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous peoples have long demonstrated resilience and holistic approaches to health, grounded in cultural practices and community knowledge. Despite this, Indigenous populations globally experience a disproportionately high burden of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Existing healthcare models often fail to address the cultural, social, and structural determinants that influence health outcomes in these communities. Digital health technologies are increasingly recognised as valuable solutions to improve diabetes care, particularly in remote and underserved Indigenous settings. O
