An easily overlooked disease in the early stages: acute intermittent porphyria.

BACKGROUND: Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is an inherited metabolic disorder that can affect the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. Therefore, its clinical presentation is diverse and may include abdominal pain, as well as neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Abdominal pain, though a common initial symptom, is often overlooked or misdiagnosed due to its lack of specificity. But early diagnosis and treatment are crucial, as untreated symptoms can progressively worsen. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a 26-year-old male who was admitted due to seizures and PRES c

Porphyria cutanea tarda and systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus is characterized by multiorgan involvement and the presence of autoantibodies. Porphyria cutanea tarda is a condition that affects the liver and skin by downregulating and inhibiting the enzyme uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase in erythrocytes. The presence of the two diseases simultaneously is rare, so we present this case report and a panoramic review of this uncommon association with scarce description found in the reviewed literature, in a patient with history of kidney transplant who is a user of immunosuppression and immunomodulation medications also

Acute Intermittent Porphyria in an Adolescent Patient: Diagnostic and Treatment Challenges.

Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder caused by decreased activity of the enzyme porphobilinogen deaminase in the heme synthesis pathway. This leads to the accumulation of toxic porphyrin precursors, such as porphobilinogen and δ-aminolevulinic acid. Clinical manifestations typically include episodic bouts of severe neurovisceral pain and autonomic dysfunction. These events have various triggers, including fasting, dehydration, hormonal fluctuations, and certain medications, while treatment involves dextrose infusions for mild attacks and intravenous hemin f

Neuralgic amyotrophy presentation of acute intermittent porphyria: A case report.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Porphyrias are inherited metabolic disorders caused by mutations in genes encoding enzymes involved in the heme biosynthetic pathway, leading to the accumulation of heme precursors. Acute hepatic porphyrias (AHP), including acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), can present with predominant peripheral neurological manifestations, often leading to a misdiagnosis as Guillain-Barré syndrome. METHODS: We report a case of AIP initially presenting as a peripheral neuropathy mimicking Parsonage-Turner syndrome (neuralgic amyotrophy, NA). Clinical and electrophysiological evaluation…

Cardiovascular abnormalities in patients with acute intermittent porphyria: the AIPRACUS study.

BACKGROUND: Diversity in clinical signs and symptoms are associated with soil transmitted diseases (STD), which are spread to humans by intestinal worms and transmitted in a variety of ways. There is a need for the present study, which aimed to investigate the prevalence of intestinal parasites and to compare between the common detection techniques for soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) among newly arrived expatriate labors in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A total of 188 stool samples were analyzed by macroscopic examination, and microscopic examination using direct iodine smear and the forma
