Twenty-four children (aged 3 months to 14 years) with severe head injuries were treated by means of invasive neurointensive care for normalizing intracranial pressure (ICP) involving hyperventilation, control of body temperature, dexamethasone, barbiturates and continuous intracranial and arterial pressure monitoring. In 1973, Iowa, a rural, midwestern state in the U.S.A., established a Statewide Perinatal Care Program. A major objective was to develop and maintain a regionalized system of care. Such a system has been developed but differed from traditional systems by using regional level II centers. Iowa's low population density necessitated this modification. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the Adverse Outcome Index perinatal quality indicator system that was derived from administrative data.
STUDY DESIGN: Adverse events were identified for 10 component measures; the Adverse Outcome Index was calculated by the National Perinatal Information Center from 42 months of administrative data.
