Work experiences of internationally trained pharmacists in Great Britain.

OBJECTIVES: Internationally trained health professionals are an important part of the domestic workforce, but little is known about the working experiences of internationally trained pharmacists (ITPs) in Great Britain (GB). The purpose of this study is to explore the work experiences of ITPs practising in the community or hospital sector in GB. METHODS: Twenty-five semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with a sample of European Economic Area (EEA) and non-EEA pharmacists who, at the time of the study, practised in the community (n = 20) or hospital sector (n = 5) in the Nor

Falls prevention focused medication review by a pharmacist in an acute hospital: implications for future practice.

BACKGROUND: Patients at risk of falling are regularly prescribed medicines which increase falls risk. Medication review is a widely advocated risk reduction strategy. OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this descriptive study were to determine the number and types of falls risk medicines suitable for intervention, and to develop guidance to optimise the effectiveness of future medication related falls prevention initiatives. SETTING: An Irish acute teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre. METHOD: 50 hospital in-patients at risk of falls underwent medication review focused on falls preventio

The calm before the storm? Burnout and compassion fatigue among undergraduate nursing students.

Studies have consistently highlighted the deleterious impact of burnout and compassion fatigue on professional nurses' well-being and willingness to remain in the profession. Yet, as to what extent these noxious conditions are suffered among nursing students is still unclear. In this study 436 undergraduate nursing students completed surveys assessing their experiences of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, lack of personal accomplishment, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction (factors of burnout and compassion fatigue). There were no significant differences fou

The role of dentists as a stop-gap in the initial management of patients with delusional halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: This article proposes a 'stop-gap protocol'for the initial management of delusional halitosis, which dental practitioners can apply where a multidisciplinary team of dentists and mental health experts (psychiatrist and psychologist) cannot be assembled. METHODS: A 4-year prospective study of delusional halitosis patients managed with a 3-step 'Stop-gap protocol' is presented in this paper, to demonstrate our experience in applying the 'Stop-gap protocol'. RESULTS: Twenty three (23) patients diagnosed with delusional halitosis were managed with the 'Stop-gap protocol' within the st

Interpersonal psychotherapy in child and adolescent mental health services.

Over the past two decades, Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) has shown itself to be one of only two evidence-based psychotherapies for the treatment of depression in adolescence-an age group where the prescribing of antidepressant medication is limited and where morbidity and recurrence are high. We review the literature on the development and research studies of the IPT model for depressed adolescent patients, as well as recent developments expanding its use to other cultures and different diagnostic areas. An overview is provided of the model in action, using a fictionalized case vignette. F

[Optimization of antimicrobial therapy based on therapeutic drug monitoring].

Recently, the pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic (PD) theory draws attention in the therapy of the infectious disease. Although the theory was only introduced into the field of antimicrobial therapy several years ago, the foundation was in the individualization of administering design by therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) begun 30 years ago. Although, the main purpose of TDM that had been performed so far was assumption of the evasion of the side effects caused with antimicrobials, it is difficult to say that it has been used as a tool to improve the efficacies. Furthermore, although the info

Fueling the turf battle. Institute of Medicine report pushes expanded scope for nurses; docs say study draws illogical conclusions.

The Institute of Medicine's recommendation to give advanced practice nurses more leadership roles in primary care is stirring up plenty of controversy. "The idea that physician oversight of healthcare will be compromised plays into the worst of the public's fears about healthcare reform," said Alexander Hannenberg, left, of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Nurse-led intermediate care: an opportunity to develop enhanced roles for nurses?

BACKGROUND: Nurse-led intermediate care units are being set up across the UK primarily as potential solutions to hospital bed crises. AIMS: This paper draws on data collected as part of a comprehensive evaluation of one 10-bedded nurse-led unit (NLU) located in the South of England. It explores the potential for enhanced nursing roles provided by such units by focusing on the views of NLU nursing staff and other professional groups within the Hospital Trust where the unit is located. METHODS: A total of 38 in-depth audio-taped qualitative interviews were conducted with NLU nursing staff and

Professional Values, Moral Resilience and Professional Competence in Critical Care Nursing: A Mediation Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Professional values and moral resilience are recognized as essential attributes of nursing practice. In critical care settings, where nurses routinely face ethical complexity and high-stakes decisions, it is important to understand how these attributes shape professional competence. AIM: To examine the relationship between professional values and professional competence among critical care nurses, and to determine whether moral resilience mediates this relationship. STUDY DESIGN: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted among nurses working in the critical care unit

Ethical challenges experienced by UK military medical personnel deployed to Sierra Leone (operation GRITROCK) during the 2014-2015 Ebola outbreak: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: As part of its response to the 2014 Ebola outbreak in west Africa, the United Kingdom (UK) government established an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone, staffed by military personnel. Little is known about the ethical challenges experienced by military medical staff on humanitarian deployment. We designed a qualitative study to explore this further with those who worked in the treatment unit. METHOD: Semi-structured, face-to-face and telephone interviews were conducted with 20 UK military personnel deployed between October 2014 and April 2015 in one of three roles in the Ebola t

Is the SANE role within the scope of nursing practice? On "pelvics," "colposcopy," and "dispensing of medications".

Clearly communicating with other professionals and with sexual assault survivors about the boundaries and imitations of the SANE medical-forensic examination is important. Although SANEs work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary sexual assault response team model to better meet the needs of sexual assault victims, they function as independent professional nurses in their role of collecting medical forensic evidence. Properly defined to focus on assessment, identification, and documentation of trauma, the SANE role is an independent professional role but is still within the scope of basic nurs…

[Occupational risks and health disorders in transport drivers].

This paper presents a review of occupational risks and health disorders in professional drivers employed in public and private transport. Epidemiological studies suggest an excess risk for cardiovascular diseases and musculoskeletal disorders in several categories of professional drivers, such as bus drivers, taxi drivers, truck drivers and forklift truck drivers. Although cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disorders are of multifactorial origin, some characteristics of occupational exposure in transport drivers (stress, workshift, traffic pollutants, awkward postures, exposure to noise and wh

The Role of Patient-Site Facilitators in Teleaudiology: A Scoping Review.

Purpose Teleaudiology helps improve access to hearing health care by overcoming the geographic gap between providers and patients. In many teleaudiology encounters, a facilitator is needed at the patient site to help with hands-on aspects of procedures. The aim of this study was to review the scope and nature of research around patient-site facilitators in teleaudiology. We focused on identifying the facilitators' background, training, and responsibilities. Method To conduct this scoping review, we searched PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase. To be included, studies needed to address teleaudiology; be
