Retrospective Analysis of the Airway Space Changes in Dentofacial Deformity after Two-Jaw Orthognathic Surgery Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

Orthognathic surgery is used to modify anomalies in maxillomandibular position; this process can significantly affect the anatomy of the airway and cause functional changes. This study aims to define the impact of mandibular maxillary movement on the airway of subjects with dentofacial deformity. A retrospective study was conducted on subjects with Angle class II (CII group) and Angle class III (CIII group) dentofacial deformities. The subjects were treated via bimaxillary surgery; for all of them, planning was performed with software and 3D printing. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was o

Craniofacial form differences between obese and nonobese children.

INTRODUCTION: Current evidence suggests that obesity is correlated with differences in craniofacial form in children and adolescents. Here, we sought to test this hypothesis by evaluating the craniofacial form of obese and nonobese preorthodontic patients, using 2D cephalometric data combined with cephalometric and geometric morphometric approaches. METHODS: Height, weight, age, and lateral cephalometric radiographs were gathered from patients aged 7-16 years before beginning orthodontic treatment at the University of British Columbia. Based on their body mass index, 24 obese patients were ag

The age-related emergence of cranial morphological variation.

Evaluation of ancestry from skeletal remains is problematic for subadults because of a lack of systematic research on the topic. This paper addresses the need for systematic research into geographical variation through childhood and puberty through the examination of the emergence of cranial morphological traits through an analysis of 756 subadults from 4 months in utero to <20 years of age. The first appearance of a trait, changes in the morphology of a trait through time, age stability as related to the age of maturation of the structure, and the developmental mechanisms and processes that c

Growth-related shape changes in the fetal craniofacial complex of humans (Homo sapiens) and pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina): a 3D-CT comparative analysis.

This study investigates whether macaques and humans possess a common pattern of relative growth during the fetal period. The fetal samples consist of 16 male pigtailed macaques (mean age, 20.5 gestational weeks) and 17 humans (9 males and 8 females; mean age, 29.5 gestational weeks). For each individual, three-dimensional coordinates of 18 landmarks on the skull were collected from three-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) reconstructed images and two-dimensional CT axial slices. Early and late groups were created from the human (early mean age, 24 weeks, N = 8; late mean age, 34 weeks, N =

The assessment of trigeminal sensory nerve paraesthesia after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy: modified somatosensory evoked potentials recording method.

Trigeminal neurosensory impairment is frequently observed following orthognathic surgery. The purpose of the present study is to visualize the degree of trigeminal nerve impairment following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO). Twenty patients who underwent BSSO were in the present study. To record the modified somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), two electrostimulation clips were applied. One clip was placed on the mucous surface of the lower lip and the other was placed on the skin surface. Each contact surface contained a separate 2 mm diameter silver anode and cathode attached to a

Comparative cephalometric analysis in patients with X-chromosome aneuploidy.

The influence of abnormal sex-chromosome constitution on cranial growth, shape and position of the craniofacial structures was analysed. Reduced cranial growth was found in women with Turner's syndrome (45 XO chromosome constitution) and in men with Klinefelter's syndrome (47 XXY chromosome constitution). Lack of or an extra X chromosome produced opposite effects on cranial-base flexion, jaw displacement and maxillary and mandibular inclination to the anterior cranial base. An extra X chromosome affected deviation in sagittal jaw relation while lack of an X chromosome influenced mandibular sha

Treatment of an adolescent with total ankyloglossia.

This is a report about the orthodontic treatment of a 13-year, 10-month-old boy with total ankyloglossia combined with a Class III occlusion. The patient's tongue was fixed to the floor of his mouth and could not be elevated at all. He had a maxillary deficiency and a mandibular protrusion with a negative overjet. However, he was able to retrude his mandible to an edge-to-edge position. Before orthodontic treatment, the ankyloglossia was surgically rectified. Orthodontic treatment was initiated to improve the patient's occlusion and facial appearance by correcting his retruded maxilla by means

The medial surface of the mandible as an alternative source of bone grafts in orthognathic surgery.

A technique of harvesting bone grafts from the medial surface of the angle of the mandible during a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy procedure is described. In 20 patients who underwent mandibular setback for the correction of class III dentofacial deformities, bone grafts were harvested from the medial mandibular angle and used for simultaneous augmentation of the midface or for interpositioning and stabilization of the maxilla after LeFort I maxillary anterior or inferior repositioning. The mean postoperative follow-up was 6 months (range, 3-12 months). No complications occurred, and posto
