There are few reports concerning the gait characteristics of sciatic nerve palsy. Four cases, one with complete palsy and three with incomplete palsy, are presented. Complete palsy (case 1) was due to sacrifice of the sciatic nerve in a wide excision for chondrosarcoma in the left ischium. Incomplete palsy (cases 2, 3, and 4) was due to contusion incurred in traffic accidents. It is noteworthy that all four patients could walk with or without a short-leg brace. But the patients with complete loss of proprioception distal to the ankle (cases 1 and 2) had to watch their steps while walking to ma…

BACKGROUND: Together with the aging of the world population, stroke incidence is expected to increase in the coming years. Stroke is frequently associated with sensorimotor impairments of the upper limb, including proprioceptive deficits, that substantially impair motor control and quality of life. Understanding how physiological aging and acute stroke affect proprioceptive processing is therefore crucial for developing targeted rehabilitation strategies.
METHODS: Vibration-induced illusion of movement was administered to 28 young, 30 older, and 23 individuals with acute stroke to the distal

Reaching to targets with misaligned visual feedback of the hand leads to changes in proprioceptive estimates of hand position and reach aftereffects. In such tasks, subjects are able to make use of two error signals: the discrepancy between the desired and actual movement, known as the sensorimotor error signal, and the discrepancy between visual and proprioceptive estimates of hand position, which we refer to as the cross-sensory error signal. We have recently shown that mere exposure to a sensory discrepancy in the absence of goal-directed movement (i.e. no sensorimotor error signal) is suff

Multisensory integration (MSI) deficits in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) have recently attracted growing interest in both clinical and research realms, MSI being crucial in maintaining well-coordinated responses to external stimuli. In this framework, we exploited the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI), an experimental procedure that induces healthy individuals to embody a fake hand by integrating multisensory body-related cues, to address potential alterations of the embodiment phenomenon in PD. Specifically, we leveraged a visuo-tactile (VT; Experiment 1) and a visuo-motor (VM; Experiment 2

(1) Background: In dystonia, the somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) is abnormally increased at rest and higher and longer-lasting during movement execution in comparison with healthy subjects (HS), suggesting an abnormal sensorimotor integration. These abnormalities are thought to depend on abnormal proprioceptive input coming from dystonic muscles. Since Botulinum toxin-A (BT-A) reduces proprioceptive input in the injected muscles, our study investigated the effects of BT-A on STDT tested at rest and during voluntary movement execution in patients with focal dystonia. (2)

UNLABELLED: A deficiency in sensorimotor integration in a person who stutters may be a factor in the pathophysiology of developmental stuttering. To test oral sensorimotor function in adults who stutter, we used a task that requires the coordination of a jaw-opening movement with phonation onset. The task was adapted from previous limb coordination studies, which show that movement coordination depends on intact proprioception. We hypothesized that adult stutterers would show deficient jaw-phonatory coordination relative to control participants. The task required initiation of phonation as a j…

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability and chronic low back pain are highly prevalent in musculoskeletal conditions. Emerging evidence suggests that they are interconnected through shared biomechanical, neuromuscular, and neurophysiological mechanisms, where deficits in proprioception, postural control, and load distribution contribute to persistent dysfunction across the kinetic chain.
METHODS: This study employed a narrative review with a conceptual framework, incorporating evidence from biomechanical, neuromuscular, and neurophysiological studies found through targeted database searches (Pu…

PIEZO2 encodes a mechanically activated cation channel, which is abundantly expressed in dorsal root ganglion neuron and sensory endings of proprioceptors required for light touch sensation and proprioception in mice. Biallelic loss-of-function mutations in PIEZO2 (i.e., PIEZO2 deficiency) were recently found to cause an arthrogryposis syndrome. Sixteen patients from eight families have been reported to date. Herein we report a new case, including detailed clinical characteristics and courses as well as comprehensive neurological features. The patient was a 12-year-old girl presenting with con…

This review aims to investigate the potential mechanisms driving the transition from acute vestibular events to chronic dizziness, focusing on the roles of neural sensitization and psychological sensitization in symptom persistence. The evolution of vestibular dizziness is analyzed from the perspectives of vestibular compensation, sensory reweighting, and the fear-avoidance model. After acute vestibular injury, central nervous system function can be partially restored through vestibular compensation, sensory reweighting, and synaptic plasticity. However, this recovery process is often accompan
