Health seeking behavior after the 2013-16 Ebola epidemic: Lassa fever as a metric of persistent changes in Kenema District, Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: The West African Ebola epidemic of 2013-2016 killed nearly 4,000 Sierra Leoneans and devastated health infrastructure across West Africa. Changes in health seeking behavior (HSB) during the outbreak resulted in dramatic underreporting and substantial declines in hospital presentations to public health facilities, resulting in an estimated tens of thousands of additional maternal, infant, and adult deaths per year. Sierra Leone's Kenema District, a major Ebola hotspot, is also endemic for Lassa fever (LF), another often-fatal hemorrhagic disease. Here we assess the impact of the Wes

Psychotherapy populations that are overlooked due to sociopolitical bias.

Sociopolitical bias has exerted a profound yet underexamined influence on clinical research and psychotherapeutic practice. This bias has shaped which questions are asked, which populations are studied, and which forms of distress are recognized as legitimate, thereby potentially marginalizing individuals whose mental health needs fall outside prevailing ideological or cultural frameworks. As a result, large segments of the population remain overlooked in the clinical literature, underserved in therapeutic practice, and unsupported by existing mental health infrastructure. The scope of this pr

Ultrasensitive Detection and Its Potential Applications in the Diagnosis of Brucellosis.

Brucellosis is a major zoonotic disease caused by Brucella spp., notably B. melitensis, B. abortus, B. canis, and B. suis. It continues to impose a significant public health and economic burden in endemic regions, including parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The clinical presentation of the disease is often nonspecific, and early, accurate diagnosis is further complicated by the susceptibility of conventional serological assays to cross-reactivity. This narrative review covers literature published between 2000 and 2025 regarding the detection of Brucella, indexed in Pub

Combining therapeutic agents to target the immune systems of hepatitis B patients: what do we need to consider?

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) remains a major global health challenge, with functional cure achieved in only a small subset of patients. Current oral antiviral agents effectively suppress viral replication but fail to eliminate the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Recent advances in immunomodulatory therapies offer new hope for improving functional cure rates. AREAS COVERED: This special report discusses the latest therapeutic strategies targeting immune responses in CHB. We list the mechanisms of immune evasion in HBV infection and highlight emerging immunomodulatory agents. Key findings f

Anthrax in Koraput, India: A 15 year retrospective analysis of epidemiological trends, seasonal patterns and vaccine coverage.

Due to its potential use as a bioterrorism agent, anthrax remains a disease of global public health concern, particularly in endemic regions. In India, anthrax is enzootic, especially in the eastern and southern states. Periodic outbreaks in both animals and humans have been reported from tribal and rural areas with poor infrastructure, where livestock rearing practices and socio-cultural traditions contribute to disease transmission. In this study, we analyzed anthrax outbreaks in Koraput district over last about one and a half decades and identified key epidemiological patterns and the vacci

Building Integrated Testing Programs for Infectious Diseases.

In the past 2 decades, testing services for diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), tuberculosis, and malaria have expanded dramatically. Investments in testing capacity and supportive health systems have often been disease specific, resulting in siloed testing programs with suboptimal capacity, reduced efficiency, and limited ability to introduce additional tests or respond to new outbreaks. Emergency demand for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) testing overcame these silos and demonstrated the feasibility of integrated testing. Moving forward, an integ

Awareness of familial hypercholesterolaemia in Australian primary care: A qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A lack of public and health professional awareness about familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) leads to an estimated 90,000 Australians remaining undiagnosed. The aim of this study was to establish the level of knowledge and awareness of FH in Australian general practices. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive methodology was used to explore baseline knowledge and perceptions of practice staff about diagnosing and managing FH. Overall, 63 interviews were conducted with general practice staff at 15 practices taking part in a National Health and Medical Research Council par

Noise as a Health Hazard for Children, Time to Make a Noise about it.

Noise, a modern day curse of advancing infrastructure and technology, has emerged as an important public health problem. Exposure to noise during pregnancy may result in high-frequency hearing loss in newborns, growth retardation, cochlear damage, prematurity and birth defects. Newborns exposed to sound above 45 decibels may experience increase in blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate; decreased oxygen saturation; and increased caloric consumption. Noise exposure in older children may result in learning disabilities, attention difficulties, insulin resistance, hypertension, stress ulcer

Equity in Pharmacovigilance: The Role of Health Literacy in Centering Marginalized Patient Voices.

Health literacy is a critical yet often overlooked determinant in pharmacovigilance, particularly in the context of socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. This article explores how low health literacy impedes the recognition and reporting of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), contributing to systemic underreporting and inequity in drug safety monitoring. Despite global advances in pharmacovigilance infrastructure, marginalized groups, such as rural communities, indigenous populations, and low-income patients, remain underrepresented in safety databases due to barriers in accessing, understan

Behavior change, health, and health disparities 2019: Opioids, tobacco, and treatment adherence.

This Special Issue of Preventive Medicine (PM) is the 6th in a series on behavior change, health, and health disparities. This is a topic of critical importance to improving U.S. population health. There is broad consensus that personal behavior patterns or lifestyle such as substance abuse, physical inactivity/obesity, and non-adherence with medical regimens are among the most important modifiable causes of chronic disease, premature death and population health. Hence, effectively promoting health-related behavior change needs to be a key component of health care research and policy. In this

The healthcare system in Sweden.

The Swedish population is characterized by high life expectancy and low avoidable mortality rates. This review outlines the Swedish healthcare system, which offers universal access to all residents and has a long tradition of reforms for social equity. Responsibility for healthcare is shared between the state, the regions, and the municipalities. The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs provides the overall healthcare framework; additionally, several governmental agencies are directly involved in healthcare and public health initiatives. The 21 regions organize, finance, and provide most prim

Determinants of parental readiness for childhood vaccination: experiences, information, sociodemographics and adherence.

BACKGROUND: High childhood vaccination coverage is critical for safeguarding public health. Sustaining high coverage requires effective infrastructure and delivery systems, as well as attention to individual decision-making, which is shaped by social, psychological and contextual factors. To optimize uptake, vaccination programmes must account for these influences and their interactions. METHODS: To advance understanding on parental childhood vaccination readiness and to inform strategies for maintaining high uptake, we conducted a survey in August 2023 among 2077 parents in Norway whose chil

Synergistic fight against future pandemics: Lessons from previous pandemics.

The history of pandemics spans centuries and has had a profound impact on human health, societies, and economies. Pandemics have caused fear, panic, and significant morbidity and mortality rates throughout history. From the Athenian Plague in 430 BC to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, infectious diseases have posed a continuous threat to global health systems. The transition from hunter-gatherer societies to agrarian communities, increased trade and interaction between humans and animals, urbanization, travel rates, and the impact of a growing human population have all contributed to the emergen

The future of HIV diagnostics: an exemplar in infectious diseases.

Over the past 40 years, diagnostics have become the backbone of HIV prevention, treatment, and retention in care, and are central to the achievement of UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. Over the next decade, the global HIV response will face difficult challenges. In addition to sustaining gains achieved in prevention and treatment, substantial gaps in care need to be addressed for underserved populations. Diagnostics will play an important role in control and prevention of HIV infection through novel technologies, digital solutions, and integrated service delivery innovations. The integration of diagno

Transportation vulnerability as a barrier to service utilization for HIV-positive individuals.

Research suggests that transportation vulnerability can negatively impact adherence to HIV-related medical treatment. Moreover, transportation can be a barrier to accessing ancillary services which can increase positive health outcomes for HIV-positive individuals. This study examines transportation vulnerability and its impact on HIV-related health and ancillary service utilization in the Mid-South Region. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with service providers and HIV-positive individuals, and survey data were collected from HIV-positive individuals (N=309) using the five A's of ac

Successful control of epidemic diphtheria in the states of the Former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics: lessons learned.

Epidemic diphtheria reemerged in the Russian Federation in 1990 and spread to all Newly Independent States (NIS) and Baltic States by the end of 1994. Factors contributing to the epidemic included increased susceptibility of both children and adults, socioeconomic instability, population movement, deteriorating health infrastructure, initial shortages of vaccine, and delays in implementing control measures. In 1995, aggressive control strategies were implemented, and since then, all affected countries have reported decreases of diphtheria; however, continued efforts by national health authorit
