Between duty and dignity navigating medical social work practice with unknown patients in India's government medical college and public healthcare system.

This article explores the complex role of medical social workers (MSWs) in addressing structural determinants of health among unidentified and homeless patients within India's public health system. Drawing on grounded field experiences, it reveals how MSWs act as crucial intermediaries navigating institutional apathy, legal ambiguity, and human rights obligations to uphold dignity and ensure care. The study highlights how caste, poverty, mental health stigma, and systemic neglect intersect to deepen marginalization. It further examines the strategies employed by MSWs to mitigate these inequiti

Attitudes towards comparison of male and female genital cutting in a Swedish Somali population.

INTRODUCTION: In Sweden, the law treats female genital cutting (FGC) differently from male genital cutting (MGC). However, the comparability of the medical, ethical, and legal aspects of genital cutting of girls and boys are increasingly discussed by scholars, although little is known about how practicing communities view these aspects. This study aimed to explore attitudes towards comparison of genital cutting of girls and boys among Swedish Somalis, and to investigate factors associated with considering the two practices to be comparable. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a cross-sectional questionn

Ebola policies that hinder epidemic response by limiting scientific discourse.

There is an unprecedented epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in west Africa. There has been a strong response from dedicated health professionals. However, there have also been irrational and fear-based responses that have contributed to misallocation of resources, stigma, and deincentivizing volunteers to combat Ebola at its source. Recently, the State of Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals issued a ban on those coming from affected countries wishing to attend the annual meetings of American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the American Public Health Association, both

The Carceral Shadow: Criminal Justice as a Determinant of Health and Challenges for Policymakers.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points The criminal justice system functions as a primary social determinant of health in the United States, generating disproportionate physical, psychological, and chronic health burdens on Black communities and other marginalized groups. Policing structural barriers-including qualified immunity, police union contracts, and municipal financing of misconduct settlements-systematically shield law enforcement from accountability and divert public resources from health-promoting investments. Advancing Australian public health initiatives targeting dementia risk reduction.

Public health initiatives aim to improve health outcomes for populations by preventing disease and ill-health consequences of environmental hazards and natural or human-made disasters. Whilst public health initiatives have been used successfully to modify behaviours for chronic diseases, many initiatives targeting reduced dementia risk in older adults suffer from conceptual and statistical flaws that greatly limit their usefulness. The limited success in modifying lifestyle dementia risk factors has led us to fall short in building a successful roadmap to dementia risk reduction. Here we argue

[A professional and institutional organization based on the “Aller vers” dynamic].

The French Union for Oral Health (UFSBD) embodies a professional initiative in institutional form, based on the philosophy of “Aller vers” (going toward). Based on plural representation, it brings together a variety of dentists, who are representative of the diversity of practices, whether in urban or rural areas, as employees or independent practitioners, or in local practice or hospital contexts. Proximity to the public is the very essence of its action and gives it a good understanding of realities on the ground. Since its creation, the UFSBD has been engaged in an ever-evolving collective

Forecasting the 2017/2018 seasonal influenza epidemic in England using multiple dynamic transmission models: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Since the 2009 A/H1N1 pandemic, Public Health England have developed a suite of real-time statistical models utilising enhanced pandemic surveillance data to nowcast and forecast a future pandemic. Their ability to track seasonal influenza and predict heightened winter healthcare burden in the light of high activity in Australia in 2017 was untested. METHODS: Four transmission models were used in forecasting the 2017/2018 seasonal influenza epidemic in England: a stratified primary care model using daily, region-specific, counts and virological swab positivity of influenza-like il

A process evaluation of how the routine vaccination programme is implemented at GP practices in England.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the incidence of several pathogens of public health importance (measles, mumps, pertussis and rubella) has increased in Europe, leading to outbreaks. This has included England, where GP practices implement the vaccination programme based on government guidance. However, there has been no study of how implementation takes place, which makes it difficult to identify organisational variation and thus limits the ability to recommend interventions to improve coverage. The aim of this study is to undertake a comparative process evaluation of the implementation of the rou

Involving the public in mental health and learning disability research: Can we, should we, do we?

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: UK health policy is clear that researchers should involve the public throughout the research process. The public, including patients, carers and/or local citizens can bring a different and valuable perspective to the research process and improve the quality of research undertaken. Conducting health research is demanding with tight deadlines and scarce resources. This can make involving the public in research very challenging. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This is the first time the attitudes of researchers working in mental health and l

Nursing in a Changing Climate: Addressing Vector- and Water-Borne Diseases.

Climate-driven vector and water-borne diseases are emerging planetary health threats, requiring nurses to expand their roles in practice, education, research, and advocacy. Nurses must recognize early, nonspecific symptoms, educate high-risk populations, and collaborate across public health, climate science, and community sectors. Knowledge gaps, particularly among frontline nurses and those outside endemic regions, highlight the need for climate-focused education. By integrating planetary health principles, participating in disease surveillance, and leading advocacy efforts, nurses can enhanc

"Our program manager is a woman for the first time": perceptions of health managers on what workplace policies and practices exist to advance women's career progression in the health sector in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that organisation-level policies are important in enabling gender equality and equity in the workplace. However, there is little research exploring the knowledge of health sector employees on whether policies and practices to advance women's career progression exist in their organisations. In this qualitative study, we explored the knowledge and perspectives of health managers on which of their organisations' workplace policies and practices contribute to the career advancement of women and their knowledge of how such policies and practices are implemente

Stigmatizing the other: An exploratory study of unintended consequences of eating disorder public service announcements.

This research explores the intended and unintended consequences of eating disorder public service announcements. We assessed participants' attitudes toward eating disorders and people with eating disorders, willingness to interact with people with eating disorders, and experience with eating disorders (covariate) at Time 1. At Time 2, participants were randomly assigned to watch a stigmatizing or a non-stigmatizing eating disorder public service announcement. Exposure to the stigmatizing public service announcement resulted in more negative attitudes toward eating disorders and in less willing
