COVID-19 Crisis Effects on Caregiver Distress in Neurocognitive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic seems to have mental health implications for both people with neurocognitive disorder and their caregivers. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to shed light on relations between caregiver mental reaction to the pandemic and caregiver distress related to neuropsychiatric symptoms, memory impairment progression, and functional impairment of people with neurocognitive disorder during the period of confinement in Greece. METHODS: The study included caregivers of patients with mild (N = 13) and major (N = 54) neurocognitive disorder. The caregiver-based t

The impact of COVID-19 on gambling and gambling disorder: emerging data.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The lockdown response to the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted commercial gambling in many jurisdictions around the world. The goal of this review is to systematically identify and describe the survey data and findings to date examining the effect on individual gambling and gambling disorder. RECENT FINDINGS: Of the 17 publications meeting inclusion criteria, the majority reported cross-sectional assessments (n = 11, 65%) and remainder were longitudinal in that they had earlier gambling data for participants (n = 6, 35%). Not surprisingly given the closure of lan

Stress symptoms and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): a comparative study between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and typically developing children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related confinement severely impacted people wellbeing. Many studies focused on general population, although it is reasonable to expect that patients with neurodevelopmental disorders might have been at higher risk. Children/adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might be potentially more vulnerable, due to their intolerance to forced restrictions that limit stimulating experiences, to obligation to follow instructions and to acceptation of imposed rules. We aimed to compare stress-related behavioral changes of the first

Evidence of significant difference in key COVID-19 biomarkers during the Italian lockdown strategy. A retrospective study on patients admitted to a hospital emergency department in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND: The Lombardy region, Italy, has been severely affected by COVID-19. During the epidemic peak, in March 2020, patients needing intensive care unit treatments were approximately 10% of those infected. This fraction decreased to approximately 2% in the second part of April, and to 0.4% at the beginning of July. COVID-19 is characterized by several biochemical abnormalities whose discrepancy from normal values was associated to the severity of the disease. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the biochemical patterns of patients during and after the pandemic peak in order

Quantitative risk assessment of the introduction of rabies into Japan through the importation of dogs and cats worldwide.

Japan has been free from rabies since 1958. A strict import regimen has been adopted since 2004 consisting of identification of an animal with microchip, two-time rabies vaccination, neutralizing antibody titration test and a waiting period of 180 days. The present study aims to quantitatively assess the risk of rabies introduction into Japan through the international importation of dogs and cats and hence provide evidence-based recommendations to strengthen the current rabies prevention system. A stochastic scenario tree model was developed and simulations were run using @RISK. The probabilit

[Imported infectious diseases in patients at Blegdam's Hospital and the epidemic diseases department of Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, during 1975-1986].

Imported infectious diseases in the Departments for Epidemic Diseases in Blegdams Hospital and the University Hospital, Copenhagen, are reviewed for the period 1975-1986. A total of 3,454 cases were diagnosed. 92% were due to parasitic infections. 20.2% of the diagnoses were made i Danes. 38% of these had malaria. Ancylostomiasis, ascariasis and trichuriasis constituted 55% of the diagnoses and were found mainly in boat refugees from Vietnam. Africa, south of Sahara, Asia and the Mediterranean countries were the commonest sources of infection. The number of diagnoses increased tenfold as compa

Plague, Religion and Urban Space in Sixteenth-Century Antwerp.

Antwerp's response to the outbreak of plague in the 1570s offers new insights into the effects of epidemics on urban communities in relation to their religious, economic, and spatial fabric. Antwerp's transition from a Catholic to Calvinist government in 1577, and back to Catholicism in 1585, allows us to study its reaction to and the effects of plague across religious boundaries within a short time span. Using GIS, we have compared various rich datasets concerning plague: the register of houses locked in quarantine; the health certificates issued by authorities; plague fatalities recorded in …

Vaccine development for mosquito-borne viral diseases.

Mosquito-borne viral diseases are a group of viral illnesses that are predominantly transmitted by mosquitoes, including viruses from the Togaviridae and Flaviviridae families. In recent years, outbreaks caused by Dengue and Zika viruses from the Flaviviridae family, and Chikungunya virus from the Togaviridae family, have raised significant concerns for public health. However, there are currently no safe and effective vaccines available for these viruses, except for CYD-TDV, which has been licensed for Dengue virus. Efforts to control the transmission of COVID-19, such as home quarantine and t…

A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome related to COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND: After the first COVID-19 case, reported neurological complications are increasing day by day. METHOD: In this paper, we present a benign-course Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) emerging 2 weeks after COVID-19 infection in a 35-years-old male. RESULTS: Cough and fever were started 18 days ago and his PCR test was resulted positive for COVID-19 infection. After treatment and quarantine were completed, he developed sudden leg weakness following autonomic features. Cerebrospinal fluid was suggestive for GBS despite the electrodiagnostic test was not helpful because it was done in the fi…

Three Cases of Escherichia coli Meningitis in Chicks Imported to Japan.

Three outbreaks of colibacillosis have occurred in chicks during the quarantine period after importation to Japan. All three were derived from three different countries without epidemiologic relevance. Some birds from each infected flock were examined pathologically and bacteriologically. The characteristic histologic finding common to all three cases was severe bacterial meningitis in the central nervous system. Pericarditis, perihepatitis, and omphalitis with bacterial colonies were also observed. The bacterial colonies observed histologically were immunohistochemically positive for Escheric…

Administrator Perspectives on Skilled Nursing Facility Building Design for Managing COVID-19 Infections and Outbreaks.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of infection control practices in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). This study examined SNF administrator perspectives on implementing built environment strategies to manage and mitigate COVID-19 transmission into and within their facility. Semi-structured interviews with SNF administrators were conducted between July 2020-December 2021. Administrators emphasized (1) the effective implementation of built environment strategies for quarantine and isolation protocols, (2) facility-level modifications used to manage and mitigate COVID-19 transmiss…

Association between COVID-19 infection and herpes zoster: A case series.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is a manifestation of the reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection in the dorsal root ganglion. The occurrence of HZ has been reported in association with COVID-19. Herein, we describe 10 cases who developed classic HZ within 2-3 weeks of acquiring COVID-19 infection. The triggers in these patients could be severe stress (related to quarantine issues, fear of hospitalisation and death) immune dysregulation and systemic steroid therapy in treating COVID-19. The clinical patterns and therapeutic responses observed were similar to HZ in immunocompetent pers…
