A retrospective study was performed of 30 patients with optic gliomas referred to the Royal Marsden Hospital between 1951 and 1981. Twenty-nine of these had progressive disease, and were treated with radiotherapy. At presentation 12 (41%) had visual deficit to the extent of at least one blind eye. Visual acuity improved following treatment in 10 (43%) of 23 evaluable patients, was stable in 11 (48%) and deteriorated in 2 (9%). We reviewed clinical and electrodiagnostic features of 16 patients with neoplastic brachial plexopathy (NBP) and 17 patients with radiation-induced plexopathy (RBP). The groups were similar in symptom-free interval after cancer diagnosis and location of the plexus lesions. Forty-nine patients with biopsy-proven Waldeyer's ring lymphoma were treated with radiation therapy between 1968 and 1979; 45 to 50 Gy were given to Waldeyer's ring structures with a 5- to 10-Gy boost to the primary site. Uninvolved low cervical nodes received 40 to 50 Gy. Chemotherapy was reserved for treatment failures. Actuarial 5-year survival was 53%, disease-free survival was 48%, and local control was 98%. From 1973 to 1978, 30 cases of early glottic cancers (TINOMO) were treated in the Department of Radiation Therapy, University of Kansas Medical Center. All 30 patients have a minimal follow-up of three years with a mean of 50.2 months, and 26 (86.7%) are alive with no evidence of disease. Radiation therapy failed in three (10%), two of whom were salvaged by subsequent surgery. Thus the overall control rate was 29/30 (96.7%). We recommend primary radiation therapy for these early lesions, reserving operation for cases of unsuccessful radiotherapy.

Epidemiologic studies of medically and environmentally exposed populations have been central to establishing ionizing radiation as a cause of malignant and benign thyroid tumors. Issues currently under investigation concern low dose effects, age sensitivity, the relative effectiveness of X-rays and iodine-131 in inducing thyroid cancer, and other risk factors. Excess thyroid tumors continue to appear in irradiated populations under study more than three decades after exposure.

Cases of radiation pericarditis among 707 patients with Hodgkin's disease after irradiation of the mediastinum were analysed. In 100 patients irradiation was combined with polychemotherapy in cycles, SORR scheme. Radiation exudative pericarditis was noted in 2.6% of patients. Later on an adhesive process was diagnosed in some of patients. Radiation pericarditis was accompanied either by feebly marked signs or no signs at all. A scheme of therapy of radiation cystitis is suggested. It was developed on the basis of evaluation of literature data and clinical examination of 205 patients with radiation injury of the urinary bladder (104 cases has severe injuries). The method is based on general and local therapy of damaged tissues by antiinflammatory drugs, anesthetics and stimulators of reparative regeneration. Soft tissue sarcomas can be adequately treated with wide local excision and postoperative irradiation, rather than the amputation of the affected extremity. Local control and good function can be achieved in the great majority of patients treated with radiation therapy, with particularly good results (95% local control) obtained for lesions of the distal extremity i.e., below the elbow or knee. Radiation myelopathy is a well-documented complication of the irradiation of neoplasms adjacent to the spinal cord. Myelography has been used to distinguish intraspinal metastases with the diagnosis of radiation myelopathy being made if the study is normal.
