To study the mechanism of action of physical antipyresis, core temperature was measured in two groups of rats in which heat loss was increased by cold exposure and by cooling an inferior cava heat exchanger, respectively, both before and after infection with Salmonella enteritidis. Cold exposure did not influence core temperature. The ability of the octapeptide of cholecystokinin (CCK-8) to inhibit independent ingestion was examined in 8-h deprived 1- to 10-day-old rat pups consuming milk from the surface of a test chamber. Effective treatment for Cryptosporidium infection in immunocompromised patients has yet to be found. We report a rodent model of persistent Cryptosporidium infection. Sprague-Dawley rats were injected subcutaneously twice a week for 8 weeks with 25 mg of hydrocortisone acetate. Ulcer formation after pylorus ligation was assessed in control, testosterone treated and castrated male rats after cimetidine treatment. The stomach was studied for incidence of ulcers and its contents analysed for pH, volume, total acidity, free acidity, pepsin and mucin activity. Testosterone and cimetidine when used alone protected from ulceration while when used in combination the degree of protection was decreased. Castration per se ead no effect on ulcer index but potentiated cimetidine induced gastric ulcer protection.

The histochemical distribution of pseudocholinesterase was studied in the rat cerebellum using Koelle's copper-thiocholine method. Throughout the cerebellum, pseudocholinesterase is uniformly localized in the endothelial cells of blood vessels and in the cell bodies and processes of the Bergmann glia. Experimental ischemic colitis proximal to artificial bowel obstruction was produced under poor regional circulatory conditions in rats. The acetate and palmitate esters of 3,4-didehydroretinol (DR; vitamin A2 alcohol) have been synthesized and characterized. When administered orally in corn oil to female rats, DR was present in the serum as the alcohol, but primarily as esters in the liver. As total stores of retinol (R; vitamin A1 alcohol) decrease, the ratio of DR to R in the serum markedly increases. During ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia in rats, PaCO2 progressively falls from about 40 torr in normoxia (PIO2 approximately equal to 150 torr) to a new steady-state at about 23 torr in chronic hypoxia (24 or more hours at PIO2 approximately equal to 90 torr). In acute (20 or 60 minutes) hypoxia naloxone treatment caused a hyperventilation greater than that caused by acute hypoxia alone. Further development of an experimental model for evaluating fertility in cryptorchidism led to studies of unilateral cryptorchidism, endocrinological cryptorchidism, and the effects of treatment.
