Cycloplegic and noncycloplegic refractions of Chinese neonatal infants.

PURPOSE: To examine Chinese neonatal infants with both cycloplegic and noncycloplegic retinoscopy and to compare the distribution of refractive errors for the two techniques. METHODS: Cycloplegic retinoscopy was performed by two experienced pediatric ophthalmologists on 81 neonatal infants randomly selected from a group of 185 neonates who had undergone noncycloplegic retinoscopy. All infants were between 1 day and 6 days of age and were born without incident at full term. RESULTS: The mean cycloplegic spherical equivalent (CSE) was highly hyperopic (+3.55 diopters [D] ± 2.39 D). The mean no

Causes of refraction changes: a classification.

This classification of refraction changes suggests new and early approaches to the treatment of complications of myopia. By appreciating the ultrasonic work on accommodation by Coleman, The field is opened for a fresh study of such diseases as macular degeneration; diseases of the vitreous, even glaucoma; cataracts; and retinal detachments. Other diseases of the retina for which the causes are obscure may be viewed for possible help, if not a cure.

Human eyes do not need monochromatic aberrations for dynamic accommodation.

PURPOSE: To determine if human accommodation uses the eye's own monochromatic aberrations to track dynamic accommodative stimuli. METHODS: Wavefront aberrations were measured while subjects monocularly viewed a monochromatic Maltese cross moving sinusoidally around 2D of accommodative demand with 1D amplitude at 0.2 Hz. The amplitude and phase (delay) of the accommodation response were compared to the actual vergence of the stimulus to obtain gain and temporal phase, calculated from wavefront aberrations recorded over time during experimental trials. The tested conditions were as follows: Cor

Risk factors and timing of ocular complications after screening for retinopathy of prematurity.

PURPOSE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a leading cause of childhood vision loss, often resulting in long-term complications such as strabismus, amblyopia, and glaucoma. Despite advances in screening, limited data exist on which infants are at highest risk and when these complications typically emerge-an important gap given the nationwide shortage of pediatric ophthalmologists. This study aimed to identify predictors of post-ROP ocular complications and determine the optimal timing and frequency of pediatric ophthalmology follow-up visits. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 223 in

Automatic infrared refractors--a comparative study.

In order to determine the performance of seven automatic infrared (IR) eye refractors, measurements have been conducted on a model eye as well as on normal subjects and patients under standardized conditions. Concerning the model eye, a range of measurement slightly smaller than specified and linearity errors have been detected on several instruments. Using a group of 55 normal ametropic subjects, the results of the automatic refraction were compared to the results of a conventional subjective examination. The spherical equivalent differed by less than 0.51 D in more than 80% of all cases on a

Creating correct blur and its effect on accommodation.

Blur occurs naturally when the eye is focused at one distance and an object is presented at another distance. Computer-graphics engineers and vision scientists often wish to create display images that reproduce such depth-dependent blur, but their methods are incorrect for that purpose. They take into account the scene geometry, pupil size, and focal distances, but do not properly take into account the optical aberrations of the human eye. We developed a method that, by incorporating the viewer's optics, yields displayed images that produce retinal images close to the ones that occur in natura
