The gastric branch of the vagus nerve is required for hypothalamic pituitary axis stress habituation in male Sprague Dawley rats.

The vagus nerve is known to participate in the negative feedback regulation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis in response to acute stress, but the role of the vagus nerve in facilitating HPA habituation to repeated stress remains largely unexplored. The role of specific vagal subbranches in stress responses is also unclear. This study evaluated whether selective surgical ablation of the left anterior gastric branch of the vagus nerve (gVX) impairs physiological and behavioral adaptation to repeated stress. Rats were assigned to gVX or sham surgery and underwent repeated restrain

Tyrosine: A Key Neurotransmitter in Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Treatment for Chronic Restraint Stress-Induced Reduction of Intestinal Innate Lymphoid Cell Type 3 Cells.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely used antidepressants. Given the prevalence of depression and its associated immune dysregulation, understanding the role of SSRIs in these processes is crucial. This study aims to explore the effects of SSRIs on chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced depressive-like behaviors and immune functions. Mice subjected to CRS were administered citalopram (CITA) during the modeling period, followed by behavioral assessments. Histological examination and flow cytometry were used to analyze the immune status and cells of the spleen and intestine

Vitamin D supplementation stimulates germ cell proliferation in a restraint-stressed mouse.

Restraint stress in the rodent model has been used for anxiety, depression, alongside testicular dysfunction. Vitamin D regulates testicular function, but its effect on restraint stress-related testicular impairment has not been investigated yet. Therefore, the present study has investigated the effects of vitamin D on the testicular function in restraint-stressed mice. The results showed that vitamin D has improved the sperm parameters and testicular architecture. Moreover, testicular architecture showed better protection in the lower dose, along with decreased oxidative stress. Elevated apop

Altered social proximity in adult mice following prenatal stress Exposure: An exploratory link to cortical neurogenesis.

Prenatal stress has been implicated in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders, yet its impact on cortical morphogenesis and long-term social behavior remains insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of prenatal restraint stress on prenatal neurogenesis and social behavior in adult offspring using behavioral and histological approaches. Pregnant mice were subjected to restraint stress (0.5 or 2 h daily from embryonic day (E) 10.5 to 14.5). Histological analysis at E15.5 revealed reduced neurogenesis and intermediate zone formation. Behavioral assessments incl

Functional topography of glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmissions along the rostrocaudal axis of the posterior insular cortex regulating cardiovascular/autonomic responses to stress in rats.

We investigated the role of glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmissions within the rostral-posterior insular cortex (rpIC) and caudal-posterior IC (cpIC) subregions of the posterior IC (pIC) in cardiovascular responses and local neuronal activation evoked by acute restraint stress in male rats. We identified that treatment of the rpIC with a cocktail containing the GABAA receptor antagonist SR95531 and the GABAB receptor antagonist CGP35348 enhanced restraint-evoked tachycardia, whereas the same pharmacological approach in the cpIC decreased this response. Treatment of the rpIC with the non

Neuroendocrine, behavioral, cardiovascular and autonomic responses to acute and repeated restraint stress in male rats.

Biological systems seem to be differently affected by stress, resulting in expression of both adaptative and maladaptive responses. The present study aimed to compare the neuroendocrine (plasma corticosterone), behavioral (anxiogenic- and depressive-like effects), cardiovascular (blood pressure and heart rate) and autonomic (tail skin temperature and frequency-domain analysis of blood pressure and pulse interval variabilities) responses observed during an acute (single 2 h session) versus the 21st [2 h/day for 21 consecutive days) restraint stress session. We found that acute restraint stress

Chronic stress triggers impairments of the redox status of salivary glands associated with different histological responses in rats.

Stress occurs as a reaction to mental and emotional pressure, anxiety, or scarring. Chronic stress is defined as constant submission to these moments. It can affect several body systems, increase blood pressure, and weaken immunity, thereby interfering with physiological health processes. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effects of chronic stress on the redox status and histomorphological parameters of salivary glands. Thirty-two albino Wistar male rats were randomly divided into two groups: chronic stress and control. Chronically stressed animals were subjected to a restraint protocol by

Dietary Zinc Restriction and Chronic Restraint Stress Affect Mice Physiology, Immune Organ Morphology, and Liver Function.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that zinc deficiency and chronic stress contribute to depressive symptoms. Our study explores the intricate relationship between these factors by examining their physiological and biochemical effects across various organs in C57Bl/6J mice. METHODS: The mice were divided into four groups: control, chronic restraint stress for 3 weeks, a zinc-restricted diet (<3 mg/kg) for 4 weeks, and a combination of stress and zinc restriction. Mice spleen and thymus weights were measured, and hematoxylin-eosin staining was conducted for liver and intestin

More efficient adaptation of cardiovascular response to repeated restraint in spontaneously hypertensive rats: the role of autonomic nervous system.

We hypothesized that sympathetic hyperactivity and parasympathetic insuficiency in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) underlie their exaggerated cardiovascular response to acute stress and impaired adaptation to repeated restraint stress exposure compared to Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Cardiovascular responses to single (120 min) or repeated (daily 120 min for 1 week) restraint were measured by radiotelemetry and autonomic balance was evaluated by power spectral analysis of systolic blood pressure variability (SBPV) and heart rate variability (HRV). Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) was measured by

Pediatric Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy: Current Practices and Implementation Barriers.

Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common pediatric motor disability, characterized by unilateral motor weakness. Pediatric Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (pCIMT) improves affected extremity function but faces variable clinical integration. This study assessed U.S. providers' awareness and use of pCIMT, educational practices, and barriers to broader implementation for more eligible children. Overall, 148 providers specializing in pediatric stroke or hemiplegic CP completed surveys on pCIMT familiarity, implementation challenges, and support for evidence-based practices (EBP). Part

Chronic Social and Psychological Stress Impact Select Neuropathologies in the PS19 Mouse Model of Tauopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Despite advances toward understanding the etiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), it remains unclear which aspects of this disease are affected by environmental factors. Chronic life stress increases the risk of aging-related diseases including AD. The impact of stress on tauopathies remains understudied. We examined the effects of stress elicited by social (chronic subordination stress [CSS]) or psychological/physical (chronic restraint stress [CRS]) factors on the PS19 mouse model of tauopathy. METHODS: Male PS19 mice (average age, 6.3 months) were randomized to receive CSS or CRS,

Role of melatonin in intestinal mucosal injury induced by restraint stress in mice.

Context: A growing body of evidence demonstrates that gastrointestinal motility disorder (GIMD) and gastric stress ulcers can be induced by restraint stress, while melatonin (MT) elicits anti-inflammation and antioxidant effects. Objective: The present study investigated the mechanisms of MT-mediated protection effects on restraint stress-induced GIMD.Materials and methods: 144 8-week-old male ICR mice were divided into four groups: control, restraint stress, restraint stress + MT and MT (positive control). 20 mg/kg MT or vehicle were intraperitoneally injected 60 min before restraint stress (1

Strain differences in maternal neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to stress and the relation to offspring cocaine responsiveness.

Early life stress exposure, including prenatal stress (PNS), influences subsequent risk for many disorders, including substance abuse, and these effects interact with genetic factors to determine risk for disease. We previously demonstrated gene X environmental interactions across the BXD recombinant inbred mouse strain panel and their progenitor strains in PNS modulation of cocaine-induced reward and locomotion. Critical to dissecting genetic interactions with PNS is consideration of the modes of stress transmission to the offspring. Both maternal neuroendocrine responses during stress and su

Pharmacological and biochemical studies on the protective effects of melatonin during stress-induced behavioral and immunological changes in relation to oxidative stress in rats.

Stress is known to precipitate neuropsychiatric diseases, and depending upon its nature and intensity it can also influence the functioning of the immune system. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxy tryptamine) a pineal gland hormone and potent antioxidant is known to protect against many diseases. Effect of melatonin in stress-induced neuro-immunomodulation is not well elucidated. Therefore in the present study, the protective effects of melatonin were evaluated in restraint stress (RS)-induced behavioral and immunological changes in rats. RS for 1 h significantly reduces (i) percentage of open-arm

Gemfibrozil pretreatment proved protection against acute restraint stress-induced changes in the male rats' hippocampus.

Stress predisposes the brain to various neuropathological disorders. Fibrates like gemfibrozil, commonly used for hyperlipidemia, have not yet been examined for their protective/deteriorative potential against restraint stress-induced disturbances. Pretreatment of rats with a range of gemfibrozil concentrations showed significant protection against stress consequences at 90 mg/kg of gemfibrozil, as it resulted in the highest level of antioxidant defense system potentiation among other doses. It also reduced plasma corticosterone compared with the stressed animals. Administration of gemfibrozil

Non-surgical management of an avulsion fracture injury of extensor carpi radialis brevis.

Avulsion fractures at the base of the index finger or long finger metacarpals are rare. We found six cases in the English language of a similar injury involving the extensor carpi radialis brevis. All were treated surgically. We describe an isolated avulsion fracture injury of extensor carpi radialis brevis insertion treated satisfactorily without surgery. The patient healed uneventfully and returned to normal pain free activity.

Prior hormonal treatment, but not sexual experience, reduces the negative effects of restraint on female sexual behavior.

These experiments were designed to determine if prior sexual experience reduced the negative effect of mild stress on female sexual behavior. In the first experiment, ovariectomized rats were hormonally primed with estradiol benzoate and progesterone for 3 consecutive weeks during which they received six mating experiences in a male's home cage or received no sexual experience. The next week, females were primed with 10 μg estradiol benzoate two days before a 5 min restraint. Both groups were resistant to the negative effects of the stressor. In the second experiment, females received 0, 1, 2,
