An unusually high frequency of periosteal lesions of visceral rib surfaces was observed in a small, prehistoric skeletal series from southwestern Colorado. Lesions of this type have been concordant with pulmonary tuberculosis in three studies of human skeletal collections with known cause of death, and in a recent clinical investigation of rib dimensions in living patients with lung disorders. Diseases such as pneumonia and actinomycosis have also been found to cause these lesions, but in much lower frequencies. We report a fetus with radiological features of the four established types of short rib-polydactyly syndrome (SRPS). The phenotype of this fetus supports the previously suggested hypothesis that the different subtypes of the short rib and polydactyly syndrome are not single entities, but rather, part of a continuous spectrum with variable expressivity.

Intrathoracic rib is a rare congenital anomaly. An unusual location with atypical pleural tenting is reported. Helical CT with three-dimensional reconstruction seems the best modality for demonstrating the origin and location of these abnormal ribs. The importance of the diagnosis of intrathoracic rib is to rule out pulmonary lesions and prevent unnecessary investigations.

A 72-year-old woman with solitary plasmacytoma of the right fifth rib was surgically treated. She underwent radical resection of the bony chest wall including the right fifth rib, the ribs above and below the involved rib, the intercostal muscle, and the parietal pleura. Thoracic outlet syndrome is the causative factor in less than 5% of patients with upper extremity ischemia. Congenital bony abnormalities (cervical rib) are most often responsible for the arterial complications of this syndrome. This article presents the case report of a patient who presented with ischemia of an upper extremity caused by embolization from subclavian artery stenosis and an aneurysm secondary to cervical rib. The treatment plan included excision of the cervical rib, repair of the subclavian artery aneurysm and a bypass graft which achieved a satisfactory outcome.

A case of solitary plasmacytoma originated in the left first rib in a 45-year-male is presented. The initial symptomatology was a Horner's syndrome. A chest X-ray, gammagraphy, TAC and arteriography showed a tumor shadow in the left chest wall; no evidence of plasmacytoma after clinical study found use where. To assess the respiratory response to abdominal and rib cage muscle paralysis, we measured tidal volume, esophageal and gastric pressures, arterial blood gases, and the electromyogram (EMG) of the diaphragm during progressive epidural anesthesia (lidocaine 2%) in 35 supine anesthetized dogs. Growing rabbits were subjected to surgical resection of the intercostal nerves on the right side, posteriorly or anteriorly. Two other groups of animals were used as sham and as normal controls. Six months after the nerve resection, there was no electromyographic evidence of denervation of the involved muscles. Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign lesion and generally occurs in the long bones and vertebral column. ABC of the rib is an uncommon entity. Two cases of ABC involving the rib are reported. Its occurrence in the eight decade of life as manifested in one of our patients is extremely rare. The aetiology, clinical manifestations, pathology and treatment are briefly discussed. En bloc resection of the lesion is curative, and offers a good cosmetic and functional result.
