Predictors of maternal health services utilization by poor, rural women: a comparative study in Indian States of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

BACKGROUND: India leads all nations in numbers of maternal deaths, with poor, rural women contributing disproportionately to the high maternal mortality ratio. In 2005, India launched the world's largest conditional cash transfer scheme, Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), to increase poor women's access to institutional delivery, anticipating that facility-based birthing would decrease deaths. Indian states have taken different approaches to implementing JSY. Tamil Nadu adopted JSY with a reorganization of its public health system, and Gujarat augmented JSY with the state-funded Chiranjeevi Yojana

Public health approaches are recommended for the majority of families who are not eligible for one-to-one professional support. DESIGN: Focus groups were carried out with parents of young children, health visitors and other professionals

Health and well-being of movers in rural and urban areas--a grid-based analysis of northern Finland birth cohort 1966.

We examined the association of health and well-being with moving using a detailed geographical scale. 7845 men and women born in northern Finland in 1966 were surveyed by postal questionnaire in 1997 and linked to 1 km(2) geographical grids based on each subject's home address in 1997-2000. Population density was used to classify each grid as rural (1-100 inhabitants/km²) or urban (>100 inhabitants/km²) type. Moving was treated as a three-class response variate (not moved; moved to different type of grid; moved to similar type of grid). Moving was regressed on five explanatory factors (life sa

The impact of health education on the prevalence of faecal-orally transmitted parasitic infections among school children in a rural community in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Faecal-orally transmitted parasites are those parasites which are spread through faecal contamination of food and drinks. Infections with these parasites are among the most common in the world being responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality, especially in children. This study was carried out to determine the impact of health education on the prevalence of faecal-orally transmitted parasitic infections among primary school children in a typical African rural community. METHODS: An intervention study was conducted in two villages in the South-West Region of Cameroon. A to

Socioeconomic distress and health status: the urban-rural dichotomy of services utilization for people with sickle cell disorder in North Carolina.

Research on sickle cell disorder has not focused attention on the socioeconomic background and geographic distribution of people with the disease. This study examines 1,189 persons with sickle cell disorder in North Carolina during 1991 to 1995. Three indices were developed using clients' medical, psychosocial and socioeconomic characteristics for the purpose of analyzing the urban-rural difference in treatment for sickle cell disease. The study observed a wide disparity in these indices between urban and rural population groups. Also, differences were observed in the utilization of services a

Strategies to strengthen rural allied health workforce recruitment and retention in Aotearoa New Zealand: evidence-based recommendations from qualitative research.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Rural and remote communities in Aotearoa New Zealand face persistent challenges recruiting and retaining allied health professionals (AHPs). Despite investment enhancing medical and nursing rural workforces, the more than 40 professional groups comprising allied health, scientific and technical collectives have received little attention. We aimed to undertake a secondary analysis to systematically develop evidence-based, actionable and context-specific recommendations to improve rural AHP recruitment and retention in Aotearoa. METHODS: We used a five-step process to tran

Circle of care model for strengthening newborn care through Kangaroo Mother Care integration in primary health systems in rural India.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) reduces morbidity and mortality among preterm and low birth weight infants, yet continuity between facility initiation and home practice remains weak in rural settings. This study examined a facility-community circle of care model in a primary care setting in southern Rajasthan, India. METHODS: In a primary health centre (PHC) managed as a public-private partnership in rural south Rajasthan, India, we trained and supported the PHC facility-based team to initiate KMC for all low birth weight babies at birth, and the outreach team to continue KMC at househ

Explaining the attitude-behaviour gap in adolescent sexual and reproductive health service utilization: A cognitive dissonance perspective from rural Uganda.

Adolescents in low-resource settings hold positive attitudes toward sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, yet fail to use them. This study presents a theoretical reinterpretation of mixed-methods data (N = 408 adolescents, aged 13-19) from Uganda's Busoga region, through Festinger's Cognitive Dissonance Theory. Quantitative findings showed health-seeking attitudes predicted SRH service utilization (β = 0.910, p < .001) and future intentions (β = 1.976, p < .001), but 52% of adolescents had no SRH service contact in past year, and mean uptake scores remained below 2.0 on a 5-point scal

Health behaviors, physical activity, and subjective well-being: rural-urban inequities among double first-class university graduate students in China.

BACKGROUND: Graduate student well-being is an emerging public health priority, yet the role of pre-university structural background, particularly rural versus urban origin, remains poorly understood. This study examined whether rural-urban disparities in life satisfaction persist among students at an elite Chinese university, and to what extent health behaviors account for any observed gap. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, 497 master's and doctoral students at a Double First-Class university in eastern China completed the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the IPAQ short-form physical

Has the COVID-19 pandemic enhanced the capacity of rural public health emergency management? Evidence from Jiangsu Province of China.

Public health emergencies pose both challenges and opportunities for improving rural public health emergency management capacity. This study develops a comprehensive evaluation framework comprising 22 indicators across four dimensions: emergency infrastructure, emergency preparedness, emergency response, and emergency recovery. Using expert scoring, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the entropy weight method, the rural public health emergency management capacity of Jiangsu Province was quantitatively assessed for the period 2016-2023 to compare changes before and after the COVID-19 pan

Culturally-Tailored Health Literacy: A Pilot Study of VHV-Led Cannabis Harm Reduction Under Nursing Supervision in Rural Northern Thailand.

Thailand's cannabis policy transition created a knowledge vacuum regarding the boundaries between authorized medicinal use and non-medical consumption, thereby increasing misuse risks. This study evaluated a culturally-tailored medicinal cannabis health literacy program delivered by Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) under public health nursing supervision as a community-based harm reduction strategy. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed in Northern Thailand. Phase 1 surveyed baseline health literacy ( n = 462 ). Phase 2 involved focus groups to co-design the intervention

Reducing rural health inequity through drone-based delivery: a spatial multi-criteria decision framework prioritizing epidemiological vulnerability in hub location.

OBJECTIVE: To alleviate spatial health inequities in rural areas by optimizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) medical hub location based on an epidemiological vulnerability-driven approach, correcting for the tendency of current logistics-centric models to overlook high-need rural populations. METHODS: A spatial multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework was developed for a simulated rural-urban fringe experiencing severe demographic aging. We defined a novel Epidemiological Vulnerability Index (EVI) incorporating three core dimensions: demographic aging, chronic disease burden (e.g., car
