Glans penis perception of Koro patients.

Koro is a form of sexual neurosis in which a reaction of acute anxiety accompanies the perception of decreased penis length from intra-abdominal traction. This study attempts to explore the glans penis perception of Koro patients by a grapho-motor projective test--DAPT (Draw-a-penis Test). This controlled DAPT investigation shows that Koro patients have significantly less perception of glans penis than the controls. This perceptual deviation in glans penis image is discussed in relation to the sexual-behavioral profile and Koro vulnerability of the patients.

Low self-esteem in eating disordered patients in the absence of depression.

Both low self-esteem and depression are well recognised as occurring in patients with eating disorders. 43 patients with eating disorders were studied to assess whether this low self-esteem occurred as part of an affective disorder or was independent of this. The patients, 23 with anorexia nervosa and 20 with bulimia nervosa, were assessed for low self-esteem, using the Rosenberg Self-esteem Questionnaire, and for depression, using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The patients had low self-esteem, despite only a minority (33%) being depressed. This study demonstrates that low self-es

Relationship among self-esteem, psychological reactance, and other personality variables.

69 women and 42 men responded to the Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory, the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Hong Psychological Reactance Scale, and the Famous Sayings test. Also, subjects rated their happiness using a Likert scale. Men scored significantly higher than did women on the UCLA Loneliness, Hostility, and Psychological Reactance measures, and lower on the Conventional Mores and Social Acquiescence measures. Loneliness scores positively correlated with Psychological Reactance scores and negatively with Self-esteem and Conventional Mores scores and with happiness self-ratings for b

Stability and level of self-esteem as predictors of anger arousal and hostility.

We examined stability of self-esteem and level of self-esteem as predictors of dispositional tendencies to experience anger and hostility. We reasoned that individuals with unstable high self-esteem would report especially high tendencies to experience anger and hostility, and that individuals with stable high self-esteem would report particularly low tendencies. We expected individuals with stable and unstable low self-esteem to fall between these two extremes. These predictions were derived from an analysis of anger and hostility that emphasized the instigating role of threats to self-esteem

Children's Depression Scale: validation with child psychiatric inpatients.

The present investigation examined the psychometric characteristics and correlates of the Children's Depression Scale (CDS) with psychiatric impatient children (n = 185; ages 7-12) and their parents (n = 154). The results revealed: high internal consistency of the CDS, significant correlations of CDS scores with other measures of depression and related constructs (hopelessness, self-esteem) and significant differences in CDS depression and positive experience scores for children independently diagnosed as meeting Research Diagnostic Criteria for depression versus other disorders. Parent CDS sc

Cognitive vulnerability to depression: an investigation of two hypotheses.

Two hypotheses concerning cognitive vulnerability to depression were examined. One suggested that there are persistent individual differences in cognitive processing related to neuroticism which predispose to depression. The other suggested that individuals in whom depressogenic processes are activated by mildly depressed mood are particularly vulnerable to becoming more seriously depressed. Compared to women who had never met Research Diagnostic Criteria for depressive disorders, women who had recovered from such disorders scored higher on measures of depression as an enduring characteristic;

[The concept of risk resulting from the study of deviancy in the adolescent (author's transl)].

On the basis of epidemiological surveys on adolescents within the overall population (university or high-school students and young workers) or on samples of young people singled out for their pathological behavior (committing suicide, for example), the authors tried to find those factors which have a predicting value as to favor a possible evolution towards deviancy. They showed that, taking into account the sociopsychological and relational environment in which it occurs, the regular use of both alcohol and tobacco may be considered as an alert-sign.

Aspects of personality associated with irregular sleep habits in young adults.

Studied psychological correlates of irregularity in chronic sleep routines. The California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and Cornell Medical Index (CMI) were administered to two groups of 18 male university students who were categorized as either irregular sleepers or control Ss. The control group was composed of persons who habitually slept from 12-8:00 A.M. Irregular sleepers were defined as those whose retiring and awakening times continuously varied by about 2 to 4 hours. Control Ss scored significantly higher than the irregular group on the CPI scales of Do (dominance), Sy (sociability),

The impact of poverty-reduction intervention on child mental health mediated by family relations: Findings from a cluster-randomized trial in Uganda.

Reviews that synthesize global evidence on the impact of poverty reduction interventions on child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) report inconclusive results and highlight the need to unpack the mechanisms that connect poverty-reduction to CAMH. To address this gap, we examine the proposition that family relations is an important relational factor transmitting effect of poverty on CAMH, and test whether family relations mediate the effect of poverty-reduction intervention on depression, hopelessness, and self-concept among AIDS orphans in Uganda. We use longitudinal data collected over the

Self-criticism and dependency in adolescents with depression: Associations with clinical features and psychological functioning.

OBJECTIVES: The personality dimensions of self-criticism and dependency have been shown to confer vulnerability to depression, and psychopathology more broadly, in adults. However, evidence for the roles of these personality dimensions in young people is weaker, particularly because most studies in this area have been conducted in non-clinical samples. The current study aimed to examine associations among self-criticism, dependency and a wide array of indices of interpersonal and intrapersonal functioning in a large sample of clinically depressed adolescents. METHODS: The study sample consist

"I feel like so much more of myself": The experience of modifying appearance in borderline personality disorder.

Body modifications such as tattoos and piercings have known identity-affirming functions. Despite this, as a subject of psychological research, they are mainly studied in relation to self-injurious behavior. Given the frequency of both self-damaging behavior and unstable identity in borderline personality disorder (BPD), and informed by a sample of 17 pilot interviews, we hypothesized that for people with BPD, body modifications provide relief from internal and aversive identity-related concerns. The present study takes a qualitative approach to examine body modification and related emotional

Leisure and learning activities and stress in children with physical disabilities: The moderating role of psychological changes after wheelchair power-assist device use.

This study examined how leisure and learning activities are associated with stress in children with physical disabilities, and how psychological changes - specifically competence, adaptability, and self-esteem - following the use of a power-assist device (PAD) influence this relationship. The study involved 19 children using a PAD for their manual wheelchairs. We collected responses regarding daily activities and activity-related feelings over a period of five days using the day reconstruction method and assessed psychological changes after the use of PAD. The analysis revealed that leisure ac

Perceived stigma and self-stigma in young people at ultra-high risk for psychosis: Associations with identity-related, psychological and functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Perceived stigma and self-stigma negatively affect identity-related, psychological and functional outcomes among stigmatised populations. There is limited research exploring the impact of stigma among young people at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis. We investigated the association of perceived stigma and self-stigma with these outcomes in young people at UHR. METHODS: Young people meeting the UHR criteria (N = 61) aged 12-25 years were recruited. Participants completed an online survey including UHR-specific measures of perceived stigma and self-stigma, as well
