Risk of virological failure and drug resistance during first and second-line antiretroviral therapy in a 10-year cohort in Senegal: results from the ANRS 1215 cohort.

BACKGROUND: In 1998, Senegal launched one of Africa's first antiretroviral therapy (ART) programs. Since then, the number of treated patients in Africa has substantially increased thanks to simplification in treatment management. Although good outcomes over the first years of ART have been observed in sub-Saharan Africa, little is known about the long-term (>5 years) risks of virological failure and drug resistance and about second-line treatment response. METHODS: Patients from the ANRS-1215 cohort in Senegal, started with either one nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor or indinavir…

Two new species of Caulobothrium (Cestoda: "Tetraphyllidea") from the duckbill eagle ray, Aetomylaeus bovinus (Myliobatiformes: Myliobatidae), off Senegal with new insights on morphological features of the genus.

Two new species of the cestode genus Caulobothrium, collected from the duckbill eagle ray, Aetomylaeus bovinus, off Senegal, are described. Although postulated as sister taxa in an earlier molecular phylogenetic analysis, Caulobothrium multispelaeum n. sp. and Caulobothrium katzi n. sp., respectively, are among the smallest and largest members of the genus. The smaller species is unique among its congeners in possessing unusual medial longitudinal grooves along the dorsal and ventral surfaces of its strobila that develop into a tandem series of elliptical apertures on the posterior proglottids…

The Typhoid Fever Surveillance in Africa Program: Geospatial Sampling Frames for Household-based Studies: Lessons Learned From a Multicountry Surveillance Network in Senegal, South Africa, and Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Robust household sampling, commonly applied for population-based investigations, requires sampling frames or household lists to minimize selection bias. We have applied Google Earth Pro satellite imagery to constitute structure-based sampling frames at sites in Pikine, Senegal; Pietermaritzburg, South Africa; and Wad-Medani, Sudan. Here we present our experiences in using this approach and findings from assessing its applicability by determining positional accuracy. METHODS: Printouts of satellite imagery combined with Global Positioning System receivers were used to locate and to…

Feeding and resting behaviours of natural Anopheles gambiae s.l. populations in an area of low malaria transmission in south-western Senegal: A comparative study between mainland and island settings.

BACKGROUND: The biting and resting behaviours of Anopheles species, which are human malaria vectors, are specifically linked to ecological and climatic requirements that characterize certain geographical settings, such as forests and humid savannah areas where favourable conditions for malaria mosquitoes are found. In southern Senegal, the outdoor resting behaviour of Anopheles gambiae s.l. populations is suspected to be a major problem in malaria control, given that indoor-based control tools are currently deployed across the country. A longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the popu…

New Microsatellite Markers for Genetic Studies on Sergentomyia schwetzi (Diptera: Psychodidae): A Suspected Vector of Leishmania infantum (Trypanosomatida: Trypanosomatidae) in the Canine Leishmaniasis Focus of Mont-Rolland, Senegal.

Visceral leishmaniasis is not endemic in West Africa, but prevalence of canine leishmaniasis and seroprevalence of Leishmania infantum infection in humans are high in the Mont Rolland community (Thiès region, Senegal). Previous studies in this area showed that Sergentomyia schwetzi could be the potential vector of Le. infantum. To precisely describe the biology and population structure of this potential vector, we identified eight novel microsatellite loci to characterize Se. schwetzi populations. We tested these loci in Se. schwetzi populations from five locations at Mont Rolland (Thiès, Sene…

Praziquantel treatment of school children from single and mixed infection foci of intestinal and urogenital schistosomiasis along the Senegal River Basin: monitoring treatment success and re-infection patterns.

Following major water development schemes in the 1980s, schistosomiasis has become a serious parasitic disease of children living in the Senegal River Basin. Both urogenital (Schistosoma haematobium) and intestinal (Schistosoma mansoni) schistosomiasis can be highly prevalent in school-aged children, with many individuals infected with both parasites. In order to investigate the transmission and re-infection dynamics of both parasite species, single and mixed infection foci at three villages (Nder and Temeye; S. mansoni and S. haematobium foci and Guia; S. haematobium focus) were studied. In e…

Decompressive fasciotomy as a limb-sparing intervention for gas-forming soft tissue infection of the lower limb in diabetic patients: A prospective cohort study of 20 cases from Dakar, Senegal.

Major amputation remains the default response to gas-forming soft tissue infection of the lower limb in diabetic patients across Sub-Saharan Africa, despite its devastating functional and economic consequences in settings with minimal prosthetic services. We report a prospective cohort study of 20 such patients who underwent primary decompressive fasciotomy at a tertiary centre in Dakar, Senegal. Overall limb salvage was achieved in 75% (15/20), and in-hospital mortality was zero. Among nine patients ultimately requiring amputation, the planned level was downstaged in 78%, including one patien…
