Seasonal fluctuations in the response of Italian Mediterranean buffaloes to synchronization of ovulation and timed artificial insemination.

A comprehensive study of the efficiency of synchronization of ovulation and timed artificial insemination (TAI) was undertaken in a large group of Italian Mediterranean buffaloes at a commercial dairy. A total of 2791 synchronization protocols were carried out on 857 animals over 3 years. Of these protocols, 823 (29.5%) did not proceed beyond Day 7 (due to the absence of a vascularized CL) and 620 (22.2%) were discontinued on Day 10 (due to the absence of follicles >1.0 cm and tonic uteri); hence, 1443 (51.7%) protocols did not progress to TAI. Data were analyzed for four periods: P1, transiti

Current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in the United States.

Although not a major public health problem, food-borne parasitic zoonoses in the United States are the cause of numerous diseases that occur widely in the population. The most common food-borne parasitic diseases in the United States are trichinosis, toxoplasmosis, taeniasis/cysticercosis, diphyllobothriasis, and anisakiasis. Since 1947, when the US Public Health Service began to record statistics on trichinosis cases in humans, the numbers of reported cases in the United States have declined markedly, from an average of about 400 with 10-15 deaths reported each year in the late 1940s, to an a

Yield vulnerability of low-income smallholders to pollinator declines in Brazil is biome-dependent.

Habitat loss and degradation, mainly driven by agricultural expansion and intensification, alter ecological processes, ecosystem services and human well-being at a global scale. Pollinator populations in degraded agricultural areas tend to collapse, which in turn can reduce the effective pollination of agricultural crops and food production, particularly in leading food producing countries, such as Brazil. We sought to understand how the vulnerability to pollinator failure and the economic value of pollination (EVP) are associated with farmland size, farmer income, habitat loss, and the size o

Assessment and Management of the Impact of Bovine Brucellosis on Dairy Herd Performance and Profitability.

Background: Bovine brucellosis is a high-impact zoonosis that threatens both dairy productivity and public health. Despite long-standing control programs in Mexico, evidence quantifying its combined productive, reproductive, and economic effects under intensive dairy systems remains limited. Methods: Farm records from two intensively managed Holstein friesian dairies operating under fully confined housing systems in Coahuila (Mexico) were analyzed to compare brucellosis-positive (BR) and brucellosis-negative (SIN) cows across five parities (n = 32,178 lactations; 15,507 BR; and 16,671 SIN). Ensuring continuity of care during the COVID-19 pandemic in Guinea: Process evaluation of a health indigent fund.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of the COVID-19 has disrupted the health and socioeconomic sectors, particularly in resource-poor settings such as Guinea. Like many sub-Saharan countries, Guinea is facing shortcomings related to its fragile health system and is further affected by the passage of the Ebola virus disease. The pandemic has worsened the socio-economic situation of the poorest people, leading to their exclusion from health care. To promote access to care for the most vulnerable populations, a system was set up to provide care for these people who are victims of health marginalization to

Knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) about rabies prevention and control: a community survey in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Despite being entirely preventable, canine rabies still kills 55,000 people/year in developing countries. Information about local beliefs and practices can identify knowledge gaps that may affect prevention practices and lead to unnecessary deaths. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We investigated knowledge, attitudes and practices related to rabies and its prevention and control amongst a cross-section of households (n = 5,141) in urban and rural areas of central, southern and northern Tanzania. Over 17% of respondents owned domestic dogs (average of 2.3 dogs/household),>95% had he

Effects of herbal medicines and their phytoconstituents on vagus nerve stimulation: a systematic review of in vivo studies.

BACKGROUND: The vagus nerve regulates autonomic, inflammatory, metabolic, and neurobehavioral functions. Although invasive vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is gaining clinical relevance, herbal medicines may represent accessible, non-invasive modulators of vagal activity. However, the extent and nature of in vivo evidence supporting these effects remain unclear. This systematic review evaluates herbal medicines and phytoconstituents that modulate vagus nerve-related outcomes in animal models. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, China Nat

Prioritization of livestock diseases by pastoralists in Oloitoktok Sub County, Kajiado County, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Livestock diseases are a big challenge for the livelihood of pastoralists in sub-Saharan Africa because they reduce livestock productivity and increase mortality. Based on the literature available there is limited understanding on how pastoralists prioritize these diseases in the context of their culture, ecosystems and livelihoods. A study was conducted to provide insights on lay prioritization of animal diseases by pastoralists in Kenya. METHODOLOGY: A qualitative study was undertaken between March and July 2021. Thirty in-depth interviews and six focus group discussions (FGDs

Management of Finger Felons and Paronychia: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Finger felons and paronychias are common presentations to the emergency department with significant morbidity and long-term pain if not managed appropriately. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review provides a focused summary of the management of finger felons and paronychias for emergency clinicians. DISCUSSION: Finger felons consist of the accumulation of pus in the pulp space of the digit, which can lead to digital compartment syndrome if not adequately drained. Paronychias are an infection involving the proximal or lateral nail folds. Early felons and paronychia may be managed with

Overcoming the snakebite challenge in Sudan: a call to action.

Snakebite envenomation is a neglected tropical disease that affects millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa, including Sudan. The severity of snakebite envenomation ranges from mild to severe, and can even lead to death. Sudan has a high burden of snakebite envenomation, with an estimated 12 632 cases and a mortality rate of 2.5% per year. The country faces several challenges in addressing snakebite envenomation, including a weak health system, limited access to healthcare facilities and a shortage of antivenom. This article highlights the challenges facing snakebite control in Sudan and prov

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: The Truth about the 'Flesh-Eating Disease' in Syria.

Recent news headlines claimed that corpses thrown into Syrian streets are causing cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) outbreaks. However, leishmaniasis is only transmitted by blood-feeding sandflies, not through human remains. High CL prevalence in Syria may instead be attributed to the absence of disease control programs due to the disruption of health services.

[Effective scabies control system in Moscow].

The analysis using the systems approach, analogue simulation, practical conclusions of the probability theory, mathematical statistical methods, programme-oriented work organization revealed and eliminated a number of neglects that had put bounds to scabies morbidity reduction among Moscovites. In 1998, the number of the foci that dermatovenereological facilities were unaware of substantially showed a 6.9-fold decrease. Therefore, the incidence of scabies reduced by 14.6% in the city in 1998. The paper presents the guidelines developed by the authors, which will ensure that the incidence rates
