[Calcified cerebral metastasis].

A hyperdense intraparenchymal lesion on a cerebral computed tomography (CT) usually corresponds to an acute hematoma; however, it is sometimes necessary to rule out a metastatic cause. Focal calcifications in the brain are common and are most often due to granulomas (tuberculosis, cysticercosis...), hamartomas, and primary brain tumors. Cerebral metastases are the most common intracranial neoplasm; however, their rate of calcification in classic series is only approximately 1%. We report the case of a completely calcified cerebral metastasis studied by CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) t

Impact of a family history of colorectal cancer on the prevalence of advanced adenomas of the rectosigmoid colon at flexible sigmoidoscopy in 3147 asymptomatic patients.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is advised as a screening test for colorectal cancer for persons with a family history of late-onset colorectal cancer. The expected outcome for this approach is not well established. We designed a large, prospective study of an unselected population to assess the impact of a family history of one first-degree relative with colorectal cancer on the prevalence of advanced adenomas at screening flexible sigmoidoscopy. We evaluated 8121 patients referred for flexible sigmoidoscopy between 1997 and 1999 and 3147 patients met the inclusion criteria. The 3147 patients were div

The utility of the Hartmann procedure.

BACKGROUND: In 1923 the French surgeon Henri Hartmann described an operation for rectosigmoid cancer as an alternative to abdomino-perineal resection for high-risk patients. In the subsequent years, the indications for performing the Hartmann procedure have broadened to include complicated diverticulitis, ischemic bowel, iatrogenic perforations, volvulus, and colitis. METHODS: We have retrospectively reviewed our experience in 185 patients who underwent the Hartmann procedure from January 1981 to December 1995. Charts were reviewed for indications, morbidity, and mortality and to determine th

The impact of physician supply on avoidable cancer deaths in Germany. A spatial analysis.

BACKGROUND: Measures of avoidable deaths incorporate the notion that deaths from certain causes should not occur within specified age groups given effective prevention or timely and appropriate access to health care. The present study investigated the impact on specific types of avoidable cancer deaths (ACD) of regional variations in the supply of health services over five years using German districts (Kreise und kreisfreie Städte) as units of analysis. METHODS: Age-standardized, average ACD rates were calculated for 2000-2004 for each of the 439 districts in Germany using unit-record mortali

Short-Term Outcomes of Robotic-Assisted Sigmoidectomy Using the Senhance Digital Laparoscopy System: A Comparison With Laparoscopic Surgery Using Propensity Score Matching.

BackgroundColorectal cancer is a common and deadly form of cancer. Sigmoid colon cancer is the most prevalent type of colon cancer. Robotic-assisted surgical systems, like the Senhance Digital Laparoscopy System, have attracted considerable attention in recent years. The purpose of this study was to confirm the non-inferiority of Senhance-assisted surgery regarding its short-term safety compared with conventional laparoscopic surgery for sigmoid colon cancer.MethodsThis retrospective single-center study analyzed data from patients undergoing a sigmoidectomy between March 2020 and 2025. Propens

Tension pneumothorax, pneumoretroperitoneum, and subcutaneous emphysema after colonoscopic polypectomy: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Colonoscopic complications are not frequent. Cases with colon perforations without the presence of pneumoperitoneum are very rare, and those with the development of tension pneumothorax are even rarer. The aim of this article was to present a unique case of the colon perforation during colonoscopic polypectomy. CASE REPORT: We report a unique case of the colon perforation made between the two layers of the sigmoid mesocolon during colonoscopic polypectomy. The colon perforation had not been recognized during colonoscopic polypectomy, but the patient stayed at the hospital

Comparison of Postoperative Outcome and Prognosis Among Laparoscopic Left Colectomy and Laparoscopic Sigmoidectomy in Sigmoid Colon Cancer Patients: A Propensity Score Matching Study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of laparoscopic left colectomy (LLC) and laparoscopic sigmoidectomy (LSD) on short-term outcomes and prognosis of sigmoid colon cancer (SCC) patients using propensity score matching (PSM). METHODS: In this retrospective study, the SCC patients who underwent LLC or LSD surgery were collected from a single clinical center from Jan 2011 to Dec 2019. Short-term outcomes and prognosis were compared between patients who received LSD surgery and LLC surgery. RESULTS: A total of 356 patients were included in this study. After 1:1 PSM a

The safety and efficacy of laparoscopic surgery versus laparoscopic NOSE for sigmoid and rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery with natural orifice specimen extraction (La-NOSE) is being performed more frequently for the minimally invasive management of sigmoid and rectal cancer. The objective of this meta-analysis was to compare the clinical and oncological safety and efficacy of La-NOSE versus conventional laparoscopy (CL). METHODS: A search of the PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases was performed for studies that compared clinical or oncological outcomes of conventional laparoscopic resection using NOSE with conventional laparoscopic resection for sigmoid and rectal canc

[A case of sigmoid cancer occurring after uretero-sigmoid anastomosis].

Colonic neoplasia occurring in an uretero-sigmoid anastomosis is a rare case of colon cancer in the clinical practice of Russian colorectal surgeons and urologists. The article presents a case of sigmoid adenocarcinoma causing obstructive pyelonephritis.
