Graphical exploration of dimensions of preterm infant growth in weight in association with biological, nutritional, and energy expenditure conditions.

The small sample sizes of studies involving preterm infants limit the use of statistics for examination of multivariate conditions contributing to clinically important growth dimensions of weight: rate of weight gain, body composition (fat-free and fat mass), and weight relative to reference infants (z score). The authors used graphical analyses, including multivariate proportional matrix, parallel coordinates, and bivariate plots with regression lines and splines, to explore specific variables derived from a theoretical model of biological, nutritional intake, and energy expenditure condition

Prevalence and hemodynamic correlates of malnutrition in severe congestive heart failure secondary to ischemic or idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy.

Whereas cardiac cachexia is well recognized, the frequency and hemodynamic correlates of malnutrition in severe congestive heart failure (CHF) have not been established. Anthropometric and serum albumin assessment of nutritional status was compared with hemodynamic, echocardiographic and serum chemistry evaluation in 48 patients with severe CHF (ejection fraction 0.17 +/- 0.05). Malnutrition, as defined by decreases in percent body fat determined from skinfold thicknesses, weight/height index or serum albumin, was present in 24 of 48 (50%) patients, who did not differ from the 24 well-nourishe

Beyond Gestational Diabetes: Maternal and Offspring Health and Lifestyle 3 Years Postnatally in a Secondary Analysis of the UPBEAT Trial Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is associated with increased future obesity risk in affected mothers and children. OBJECTIVE: We assessed if dietary behaviours learnt during a GDM pregnancy positively impact maternal and child health 3 years postpartum. METHOD: In a secondary analysis, we included women with obesity recruited to the UPBEAT randomised controlled trial with 3-year follow-up postnatally (n = 441). Maternal and offspring anthropometry and dietary data were recorded antenatally and at follow-up. Data were assessed using linear/logistic regression, adjusting for confounders

Relationships of maternal body mass index and plasma biomarkers with childhood body mass index and adiposity at 6 years: The Children of SCOPE study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity has been implicated in the origins of childhood obesity through a suboptimal environment in-utero. OBJECTIVE: We examined relationships of maternal early pregnancy body mass index (BMI), overweight/obesity, and plasma biomarkers of obesity, inflammation, insulin resistance, and placental function with measures of childhood BMI and adiposity. METHODS: BMI z-score, sum of skinfold thicknesses (SST), body fat percentage (BFP, by bioelectrical impedance), and waist, arm, and hip circumferences were measured in 1173 6-year-old children of nulliparous pregnant women in

Is a body mass index of 23 kg/m² a reliable marker of protein-energy wasting in hemodialysis patients?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the body composition and inflammatory status in patients on hemodialysis (HD) according to the cutoff of 23 kg/m² for the body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Forty-seven patients (30 men, 11 diabetics, 53.8 ± 12.2 y of age, 58.2 ± 50.9 mo on HD) were studied. Anthropometric data and handgrip strength were evaluated. C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, leptin, and interleukin-6 were measured. Mortality was assessed after 24 mo of follow-up. RESULTS: Nineteen patients (40.4%) presented BMI values lower than 23 kg/m² and leptin levels, midarm muscle area, and free-fa

To what extent is the protective effect of breastfeeding on future overweight explained by decreased maternal feeding restriction?

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have found that breastfeeding may protect infants against future overweight. One proposed mechanism is that breastfeeding, as opposed to bottle feeding, promotes maternal feeding styles that are less controlling and more responsive to infant cues of hunger and satiety, thereby allowing infants greater self-regulation of energy intake. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which the protective effect of breastfeeding on future overweight is explained by decreased maternal feeding restriction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 1012 mother-infant p

Endometrial cancer in a cohort screened for breast cancer.

In a cohort of 25,000 women aged 40-65 years at intake in a periodic screening programme for breast cancer the occurrence of endometrial cancer was studied during a follow-up period of up to 18 years. The authors examined whether they could confirm the existence of a number of relationships between this cancer and some reproductive and anthropometric factors which had been found in several case-control studies and in a few cohort studies. A comparison was made between 147 cases of endometrial cancer occurring during the period of follow-up and a random sample of 900 women taken from the cohort

Adductor Pollicis Muscle Thickness and Obesity Are Associated with Poor Outcome after Stroke: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional status may influence outcome after stroke. It is possible that some obese individuals present reduced fat-free mass. AIMS: We aimed to determine if bedside evaluation of body composition by the body mass index (BMI), adductor pollicis muscle thickness (APMT) and arm muscle area (AMA), and the combination of low APMT or AMA with obesity are associated with disability 90 days after stroke. METHODS: A cohort study evaluating 120 patients hospitalized at the Stroke Unit was carried out. Data were expressed as average ± standard deviation or median and percentiles. Obesity

Malnutrition is prevalent among hemodialysis patients in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Malnutrition (MN) in hemodialysis patients (HDP) is prevalent worldwide. How-ever, data regarding the nutritional status among HDP living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is lacking. The purpose of this study was to detect MN in HDP at the Jeddah Kidney Center, with an inexpensive nutritional assessment protocol consisting of anthropometric body mass index (BMI), triceps skin fold (TSF), mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) and biochemical (albumin) blood measurements and the seven-point subjective global assessment (SGA). A cross-sectional study assessed 269 HDP for MN through a questionnaire, SGA and

The study of women, infant feeding and type 2 diabetes after GDM pregnancy and growth of their offspring (SWIFT Offspring study): prospective design, methodology and baseline characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is associated with reduced risk of becoming overweight or obese later in life. Breastfed babies grow more slowly during infancy than formula-fed babies. Among offspring exposed in utero to maternal glucose intolerance, prospective data on growth during infancy have been unavailable. Thus, scientific evidence is insufficient to conclude that breastfeeding reduces the risk of obesity among the offspring of diabetic mothers (ODM). To address this gap, we devised the Study of Women, Infant Feeding and Type 2 Diabetes after GDM Pregnancy and Growth of their Offspring, also

Fetal anterior wall thickness and amniotic fluid insulin levels: an interdependence?

PURPOSE: Excessive fetal fat as the hallmark of GDM pregnancy complications is one consequence of fetal hyperinsulinism. Noninvasive methods for fetal surveillance and measurement of fetal fat are needed. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that measurements of the fetal anterior abdominal wall thickness (AAWT) in women with GDM will allow early detection of fetal hyperinsulinism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Amniocentesis was performed between 28 and 32 weeks of gestation (wks) in 220 women with GDM (diagnosed by 75 g oGTT at 24 to 28 wks). Amniotic fluid insulin levels (AFIL) wer

A comparative study of maximal aerobic power of school boys of east and north-east regions of India.

OBJECTIVE: The evaluation of physiological responses during graded ergometry in children has been proven to be useful to determine the growth and development of cardio-respiratory and musculo-energetic systems and is also essential in sports and games. In India few attempts have been made to determine the peak oxygen consumption (VO2) of children from different regions. This study aims to investigate peak VO2 and its relation to other anthropometric parameters of school boys (8 to 14 years age) from east region (ER) and north east region (NER) of India. Also, this study attempts to find out th

Evaluation of Changes in the Anthropometric Measurements of Infants in Relation to the Type of Feeding and the Presence of Gestational Diabetes in Their Mothers: A Preliminary Study.

Background: Breastfeeding is widely regarded as the optimal method of infant nutrition. A notable benefit of breastfeeding is its potential to avert the development of childhood overweight and obesity. This assertion holds particular significance in the context of infants whose mothers have exhibited gestational diabetes, a condition that has been demonstrated to be associated with an increased risk of carbohydrate and/or fat disorders in offspring, potentially leading to the onset of overweight and obesity in later life. Objective: The objective of the present study was to examine the variati
