Interobserver reliability of ICSD-R minimal diagnostic criteria for the parasomnias.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the interobserver reliability (IR) of the minimal diagnostic criteria for the parasomnias provided in the International Classification of Sleep Disorders Revised (ICSD-R). METHODS: Fifty consecutive subjects underwent a structured interview by three doctors based on the ICSD-R minimal criteria for the diagnosis of 13 parasomnias at any time in life. IR was calculated by Kappa statistics and interpreted according to conventional categories. RESULTS: In the group of Arousal Disorders, IR was "substantial" (kappa 0.74) for confusional arousals, "slight" (kappa 0.36) for s

Fluoride exposure and sleep patterns among older adolescents in the United States: a cross-sectional study of NHANES 2015-2016.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride from environmental sources accumulates preferentially in the pineal gland which produces melatonin, the hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. However, the effects of fluoride on sleep regulation remain unknown. This population-based study examined whether chronic low-level fluoride exposure is associated with sleep patterns and daytime sleepiness among older adolescents in the United States (US). METHOD: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015-2016). We analyzed data from adolescents who had plasma fl

Sleep-disordered breathing in patients with acute supra- and infratentorial strokes. A prospective study of 39 patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although recent studies suggest a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with acute stroke, a systematic characterization of sleep-disordered breathing based on the severity and topography of stroke has not been performed. METHODS: We prospectively studied 39 noncomatose adult subjects (15 women, 24 men; mean age, 57 years) with a first acute stroke. Sleep history, cardiovascular risk factors, stroke severity as estimated by the Scandinavian Stroke Scale, and extent of stroke demonstrated on a computed tomographic or magnetic resonance imaging sca

Sleep abnormalities in bipolar disorders across mood phases: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sleep abnormalities are core features of bipolar disorders (BD), but they have not been thoroughly examined across mood phases. This meta-analysis investigated sleep disturbance prevalence and sleep characteristics differences in BD across mood phases. A systematic search through September 2024 identified 44 studies (7614 BD cases, 3164 controls), including 11 prevalence and 34 case-control studies. Poor sleep quality prevalence was 52% during euthymia, and insomnia prevalence was 63% during the depressive phase. Individuals with euthymic BD reported worse sleep quality and objectively measure

Sleep disturbances in ADHD: investigating the contribution of polygenic liability for ADHD and sleep-related phenotypes.

Sleep disturbances are common in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and associated with poor outcomes. We tested whether, in children with ADHD, (1) polygenic liability for sleep phenotypes is over- or under-transmitted from parents, (2) this liability is linked to comorbid sleep disturbances, and (3) ADHD genetic risk is associated with comorbid sleep disturbances. We derived polygenic scores (PGS) for insomnia, chronotype, sleep duration, and ADHD, in 758 children (5-18 years old) diagnosed with ADHD and their parents. We conducted polygenic transmission disequilibrium tests for

Sleep disorders in functional neurological disorder - a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Functional neurological disorders (FND) are conditions marked by disruptions in brain network function without structural abnormalities. Sleep disturbances, though under-researched, are commonly observed in FND patients and may worsen symptoms and overall health. METHODS: This systematic review had been registered prospectively in PROSPERO with the registration number: CRD42023446306. Search of PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases identified 218 articles. After removing duplicates and applying exclusion criteria, 9 studies were included in the final analysis. RESULTS

Sleep-related disorders in carpal tunnel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) often wake up at night due to pain and numbness of affected fingers and hand. We studied the sleep disorder caused by CTS. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 34 consecutive patients referred for operative treatment of CTS answered to a sleep questionnaire and the results were compared to a stratified random sample of 1600 Finns aged 36-50 year, whose response rate to the mailed questionnaires was 75.2% (n = 1186). Six CTS patients underwent a polygraphic sleep study before and after operative treatment of CTS. RESULTS: CTS patients reported sufferi

Sleep architecture is altered in the reserpine-induced fibromyalgia model in ovariectomized rats.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a musculoskeletal chronic pain syndrome with various concomitant symptoms like sleep disorders. FM patients are mainly women and menopause might play an important role in the altered processing of somatosensory information. Adverse effects and moderated efficacy of drugs promote treatment discontinuation by patients. Animal models of FM report pain and depression-like behaviors, but none of them have explored sleep disturbance as possible marker in the preclinic diagnostic. The aim of this study was to investigate alterations of the sleep architecture in the reserpine (RES

Intact sleep-dependent memory consolidation of auditory statistical learning among young adults with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder commonly linked to deficits in executive function. However, some theoretical frameworks propose that ADHD may also involve disruptions in cognitive mechanisms central to statistical learning, such as predictive processing and implicit learning. Moreover, abnormal sleep electroencephalography in ADHD raises the possibility of altered sleep-dependent memory consolidation of statistical learning. AIM: Here we examined how individuals with ADHD acquire and consolidate statistical regularities in auditory

Lipidome profiles and sleep disorders: A Mendelian randomization analysis of insomnia, sleep terrors, sleep apnea, and circadian rhythm disturbances.

Sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep terrors, sleep apnea, and sleep-wake schedule disorders, pose a significant public health challenge worldwide, yet their underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. Lipids, beyond being structural membrane components, actively regulate neuroinflammation, circadian rhythms, and neuronal signaling, all implicated in sleep disorder pathophysiology. This study employed two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) to explore the causal relationships between the lipidome and these sleep disorders, analyzing a comprehensive GWAS dataset wit

Up to the beginning of modern sleep research, theories about sleep have dominated the scene. With their philosophic background, they must be considered as erroneous by present standards. The history of sleep-inducing drugs has followed its own pathways, which were independent from sleep research. Up to the 19th century, opium and alcohol were used predominantly as hypnotics, later, empirically found chemical compounds were added. Today, new drugs are tested by methods of modern sleep research before they reach the market. Electrophysiology, whose origins are described, formed the basis of elec

Atypical antipsychotics: sedation versus efficacy.

Many patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder experience disturbances in their sleep-wake cycle, which may be a result of the disorder itself, of pharmacotherapy, or of a comorbid sleep disorder. These sleep disruptions can seriously impair patients' functioning as well as their quality of life. Therefore, accurate assessment of sleep problems is essential to appropriately treat patients and promote symptomatic remission. Sedating antipsychotics may ameliorate sleep disturbances, as well as agitation or other behavioral emergencies; however, these agents may also sedate patients to the

[Review on sleep and awakening disorders].

Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorders and affects severely 10% of adults worldwide. From poor sleep to insomnia, the severity of sleep disorders should be assessed clinically and by the use of validated questionnaires based on international consensual definitions. One main sign of insomnia is impaired daytime functioning. Insomnia may be treated with hypnotics only for a limited duration. Behavioural and cognitive therapies have been found efficient on chronic insomnia. Sleepiness is also a common sleep disorders due to altered sleep schedules, sleep deprivation, sleep disorders or as

Sleep of depressed patients with hypersomnia: a 24-h polygraphic study.

Sleep of 6 depressed patients with hypersomnia was studied during their depressed phase and their remitted phase using 24-h polygraphic recording. Nine normal subjects were studied as the controls. The latency to sleep onset of the depressed patients was significantly shorter than that of the remitted patients and that of the control subjects. The total sleep time of the depressed patients was significantly longer than that of the remitted patients as well as that of the controls. This increase in sleep time of the depressed patients was mainly due to the increased sleep in day time. The inter

Cross-lagged relationship between anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbance among college students during and after collective isolation.

OBJECT: Repeated quarantine policies over the past 3 years have led to poor psychological consequences for the public. Previous studies have proved that the quarantine policy leaves individuals vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and insomnia, especially among college students. This study aims to explore whether psychological problems during isolation continue with the release of isolation. METHODS: Overall, 2,787 college students both answered a web-based survey during and after the closure management was lifted. The Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and Youth

Management of Sleep Disturbances in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is defined by its motor symptoms rigidity, tremor, and akinesia. However, non-motor symptoms, particularly autonomic disorders and sleep disturbances, occur frequently in PD causing equivalent or even greater discomfort than motor symptoms effectively decreasing quality of life in patients and caregivers. Most common sleep disturbances in PD are insomnia, sleep disordered breathing, excessive daytime sleepiness, REM sleep behavior disorder, and sleep-related movement disorders such as restless legs syndrome. Despite their high prevalence, therapeutic options in the in-
