The psychosocial impact of acne, vitiligo, and psoriasis: a review.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic skin conditions have been well reported to affect a patient's quality of life on multiple dimensions, including the psychosocial domain. Psychosocial is defined as the interrelation of social factors with an individual's thoughts and behavior. The assessment of the psychosocial impact of skin disease on a patient can help direct the dermatologists' treatment goals. To evaluate the psychosocial impact of skin disease, we conducted a review of the literature on three skin conditions with onsets at various stages of life: acne, vitiligo, and psoriasis. METHODS: A PubMed sea

A transdiagnostic study of theory of mind in children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Theory of mind (ToM) is fundamental for social interactions, allowing individuals to appreciate that others have their own mental states. Children and youth with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)) often show differences in ToM abilities compared to their neurotypical (NT) peers. Given the phenotypic heterogeneity and overlap associated with these conditions, this motivates a transdiagnostic investigation of ToM across neurodevelopmental conditions. METHODS: Five hundred and fifty-fi

Common and distinct neural correlates of facial emotion processing in social anxiety disorder and Williams syndrome: A systematic review and voxel-based meta-analysis of functional resonance imaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Williams-Beuren Syndrome (WS) are two conditions which seem to be at opposite ends in the continuum of social fear but show compromised abilities in some overlapping areas, including some social interactions, gaze contact and processing of facial emotional cues. The increase in the number of neuroimaging studies has greatly expanded our knowledge of the neural bases of facial emotion processing in both conditions. However, to date, SAD and WS have not been compared. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of functional magnetic resonance imaging

The profile of social communication in Dravet syndrome.

Dravet syndrome (DS) presents a multifaceted clinical picture marked by epilepsy, cognitive impairments and behavioral disorders that progresses throughout development. Behavioral disorders include impairments in social relationships and communication, with frequent diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. This study focused on comprehensively evaluating and comparing social communication profiles among a group of 43 children with Dravet syndrome, 30 children with level 1 autism spectrum disorder, 36 with social (pragmatic) communication disorder, and 18 with intellectual disability. Using valid

Correlates of treatment seeking in individuals with social anxiety disorder: Findings from a nationally representative sample.

Despite the availability of well-established and efficacious treatments for social anxiety disorder, most socially anxious individuals do not seek treatment and those who do often suffer for years before seeking treatment. A more comprehensive understanding of the factors related to treatment seeking for social anxiety disorder is needed. This study utilized the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (NESARC-III), a large representative U.S. adult sample, to examine the relationships between treatment seeking for social anxiety disorder and demographic characterist

Social attention in anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum disorder: Role of social motivation.

Research suggests a relationship between autism and anorexia nervosa. For example, rigid and inflexible behaviour, a preference for routine and social difficulties are seen in both conditions. In this study, we examined whether people with anorexia and people with autism show similarities in social attention (where they look while engaging in social interactions or watching a scene with people interacting). This could help us understand why people with anorexia and autism experience difficulties in social situations. Participants with either anorexia or autism, as well as participants with no

Addressing Social Adversity to Improve Outcomes for Children After Liver Transplant.

The social determinants of health, defined as the conditions in which we live, learn, work, and play, undoubtedly impact health outcomes. Social adversity in childhood perpetuates over the life course and has consequences extending into adulthood. This link between social adversity and adverse outcomes extends to children undergoing liver transplant, with children from socioeconomically deprived neighborhoods experiencing a greater burden of morbidity and mortality after transplant. Yet, we lack an in-depth understanding of how to address social adversity for these children. Herein, we lay out

Improving social belonging, meaning, and mental health during COVID-19: A self-affirmation approach.

The topics of social belonging, meaning and purpose in life, and mental health have enduring significance, and our objective was to assess the efficacy of two values-affirmation (VA)-based interventions in forestalling critical psychological costs of the COVID-19 pandemic. Both were based on self-affirmation theory (Steele, 1988) and sought to help people stay connected with their core values during this stressful time. One intervention was a one-time VA activity in which participants wrote about important values and were reminded of the value of focusing on core values during uncertain times.

[COVID-19 in the midst of a "perfect storm" in neoliberal capitalism: critical reflections on its impacts in Brazil].

The impacts of the recent coronavirus pandemic on Brazilian society revealed a scenario that goes beyond a health crisis. This article sets out to present the causes and consequences of a systemic crisis in the neoliberal economic order based on the prominence of markets and social exclusion, while the role of the State - as the guardian of social rights - is neglected. The methodology adopted follows a critical interdisciplinary perspective from the fields of political economy and social sciences, located in socioeconomic reports referred to in this analysis. It is argued that the neoliberal

Vocal and social impairments in songbirds embryonically exposed to an autism risk factor.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex neurodevelopmental conditions marked by social communication deficits. Although rodent and chicken models have yielded insights into social and sensory abnormalities, their innate vocalizations preclude the study of vocal learning impairments common to autism. Leveraging the vocal learning abilities of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), we investigated how embryonic exposure to valproic acid (VPA) affects vocal development and social behavior. VPA exposure disrupted song acquisition, resulting in impaired tutor imitation, delayed song consolidation

The availability of outdoor spaces enhances social play in dairy cows.

Social behaviors are widely recognized as valuable indicators of animal welfare. This study examined the behavioral profiles of two groups of cows: one with daytime access to an open outdoor area and one housed exclusively in a free-stall barn. Observations were conducted when both groups were in the same indoor environment, allowing for a direct comparison of their behavioral expressions. Cows with outdoor access engaged significantly more in social play, while no statistically significant differences were observed for other social behaviors such as allogrooming, social rubbing, or submission

Social vulnerability shapes deep clinical phenotypes and brain health in aging and dementia across Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse social conditions across the life course influence brain aging and dementia, yet their compounded impact on clinical phenotypes remains underexplored, particularly in Latin America, where social inequality and dementia burden are high. METHODS: We studied 3941 individuals from six Latin American countries, including cognitively unimpaired controls (CU), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). A life-course questionnaire captured eight domains of social vulnerability, used to derive a social vulnerability index and latent vulnerability prof…

Feasibility, Acceptability, and Efficacy of an Ecological Momentary Intervention for Autistic Adults.

PURPOSE: Many autistic adults experience limited access to scalable social-emotional supports, underscoring the need for low-intensity interventions that can be integrated into daily life. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a one-week ecological momentary intervention (EMI) designed to enhance social attention and social-emotional functioning through in vivo real-time reporting of social interactions. METHODS: Thirty-one autistic adults were randomized to one of three conditions (facial expression, hair color, or passive control) and completed an

Inducing and measuring identity levels in professional rugby players during immersion in an interactive virtual environment.

During a game, players experience substantial affective fluctuations, particularly through cognitive appraisal processes, which notably involves self-categorisation process. However, designing a mental training programme using the contextual elements of a game is still a challenge. Moreover, social contexts can be recreated in virtual reality and it has been demonstrated that people tend to have realistic affective and behavioural reactions to it. In this study, we recreated, in virtual reality, one of the key contexts that players can encounter during a rugby game, a try. After an embodiment

Behavioral and neural responses to social exclusion in women: the role of facial attractiveness and friendliness.

The behavioral and neural responses to social exclusion were examined in women randomized to four conditions, varying in levels of attractiveness and friendliness. Informed by evolutionary theory, we predicted that being socially excluded by attractive unfriendly women would be more distressing than being excluded by unattractive women, irrespective of their friendliness level. Our results contradicted most of our predictions but provide important insights into women's responses to interpersonal conflict. Accounting for rejection sensitivity, P300 event-related potential amplitudes were larges
