Inborn errors of immunity at school: How can we do better?

Adolescents with inborn errors of immunity (IEI) face physical limitations, social difficulties, psychological issues, and school absenteeism. Improving their school integration is essential. 13 adolescents with confirmed IEI attending high school, along with their parents, classmates, and teachers, participated in the study to evaluate social and academic adaptation indicators. A questionnaire was developed to gather perceptions on diagnosis, adaptation, understanding, socialization, coordination, and challenges. 13 adolescents (median age 13.8, IQR 13-15), 21 parents, 13 teachers, and 74 cla

Forced to Live: Controlled Forced Feeding of Political Prisoners and the Challenge to Nation-States' Civilising Processes.

Since the nineteenth century, struggles between state power and political prisoners' right to die have aroused considerable interest. State enforcement to 'make live' through force-feeding also raises important questions concerning processes that inform government approaches, often through methods considered to be brutal, and how these actions fit within perceptions of civilised behaviour. The social scientific focus of hunger strikes tends to be informed by Foucauldian bio-power and governmentality which we draw upon when applying insights from figurational sociology. These insights allow us

Exploring multimodal collaborative storytelling with Pepper: a preliminary study with zero-shot LLMs.

With the rise of large language models (LLMs), collaborative storytelling in virtual agents or chatbots has gained popularity. Despite storytelling has long been employed in social robotics as a means to educate, entertain, and persuade audiences, the integration of LLMs into such platforms remains largely unexplored. This paper presents the initial steps for a novel multimodal collaborative storytelling system in which users co-create stories with the social robot Pepper through natural language interaction and by presenting physical objects. The robot employs a YOLO-based vision system to re

Socio-structural Factors Associated with Mental Health, Substance Use, and HIV Risk Among Black Sexual and Gender Minorities in the House and Ball Community.

The House and Ball Community (HBC), a tight-knit social and cultural network comprised primarily of Black sexual and gender minorities (SGM), offers unique opportunities for HIV prevention that leverage naturally occurring social support networks. However, experiences of socioeconomic marginalization, stigma, violence, and trauma may impede HIV prevention efforts. This study analyzed data from 551 Black SGM recruited at HBC events in 2 cities over 24 months. Logistic regression with generalized estimating equations examined associations between socio-structural stressors, mental health, substa

[The role of occupational therapy in rehabilitating injured at work].

The evolution of social and health setting in its demographic, productive and welfare elements make work as a finalized activity oriented to different tasks, from individual indepencence to social integration. In this context, the word "re-habilitation" has a double value; on one hand consideration of lifetime acquired abilities; on the other hand recovery of residual activities, consistent with the disablement. In Italy, for years, rehabilitation activities were performed by physiotherapists, who had inadequate occupational knowledge and preferred technical skills of non-finalized function re…

Integrating Patient-Reported Outcomes into Atrial Fibrillation Care Pathways: Implementation Challenges, Health System Implications, and Future Directions.

Background/Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) imposes a substantial long-term clinical and healthcare system burden, recurrent hospitalizations, impaired quality of life, and increasing long-term healthcare costs. Although patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used in AF research and clinical practice, their broader role in healthcare delivery, implementation, and system-level decision-making remains insufficiently defined. Existing assessment strategies frequently prioritize symptom burden while underrepresenting cognitive, emotional, social, and functional dimensions o

Risky riding behavior on two wheels: the role of cognitive, social, and personality variables among young adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to analyze and estimate the relations between risky riding behaviors and some personality and sociocognitive variables through structural equation modeling. We focused on two-wheel riding behavior among a sample of 1,028 Italian adolescents at their first driving experience. CONCLUSIONS: The main findings confirmed the role of personality in influencing riding behavior directly as well as indirectly through risk perception. In particular, risk perception was a significant mediator between personality, social norm, and riding behavior. The signif

Freedom of choice supports social complexity in chimpanzees.

Fission-fusion sociality offers almost infinite options for individuals to make self-determined choices about how to range across space, spend time in different activities, and associate with conspecifics. Yet, how such freedoms contribute to the construction of functional social groups has received little attention. In this investigation, we found that sanctuary-living chimpanzees residing within spacious outdoor habitats with choice among a variety of social partners formed integrated communities that showed emergent properties of the fission-fusion social systems. Social network topology va

Toward a Developmental Timing Framework for Autism: Linking Hemispheric Asymmetry, Motor Organization, and Motor-Social Coupling.

Early behavioral features associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are frequently examined within separate motor, sensory, and social domains rather than as interacting components of a developing neurobiological system. In this article, we present a hypothesis-driven conceptual framework proposing that variation in developmental timing and coordination across neural, motor, and interpersonal systems may contribute to differences in early social developmental trajectories. Drawing on evidence from fetal, infant, and early childhood development, we consider how hemispheric specialization,

Examining the Role of Structural and Functional Social Network Characteristics in the Context of Chronic Pain: An Ego-centered Network Design.

The well-being and functioning of individuals with chronic pain (CP) vary significantly. Social factors, such as social integration, may help explain this differential impact. Specifically, structural (network size, density) as well as functional (perceived social support, conflict) social network characteristics may play a role. However, it is not yet clear whether and how these variables are associated with each other. Objectives were to examine 1) both social network characteristics in individuals with primary and secondary CP, 2) the association between structural network characteristics a…

The CI plus model: a qualitative study of innovative community isolation and enhanced resilience in urban Thailand during the COVID-19 crisis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in urban health systems, particularly in densely populated, low-resource communities. During the overwhelming third wave in Bangkok, Thailand, the Enhanced Community Isolation (CI Plus) Model emerged as an innovative response in the Yothi Medical Innovation District Community (YMIC). This qualitative study examined the mechanisms that enabled this vulnerable urban community to successfully implement a 170-bed isolation center and build resilience through community-based crisis response, providing insights for future pandemic pr

Accounting for Taste: A Multi-Attribute Neurocomputational Model Explains the Neural Dynamics of Choices for Self and Others.

How do we make choices for others with different preferences from our own? Although neuroimaging studies implicate similar circuits in representing preferences for oneself and others, some models propose that additional corrective mechanisms come online when choices for others diverge from one's own preferences. Here we used event-related potentials (ERPs) in humans, in combination with computational modeling, to examine how social information is integrated in the time leading up to choices for oneself and others. Hungry male and female participants with unrestricted diets selected foods for t

[A model for integrating mental health care resources in the rural population of Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this project was to identify behaviors of health service utilization to solve mental health-related problems among rural inhabitants of Mexico. A model of pathways to mental health services was built. Based on this model, an integration-intervention model is proposed to help improve access to mental health services and their quality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 1997, in-depth interviews were conducted among 21 adults (9 men and 12 women) and seven healthcare providers, in a rural community in Jalisco, Mexico. Women's age ranged from 23 to 44 years; ten were married and

Integrating HIV and substance use services: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use is an important risk factor for HIV, with both concentrated in certain vulnerable and marginalized populations. Although their management differs, there may be opportunities to integrate services for substance use and HIV. In this paper we systematically review evidence from studies that sought to integrate care for people living with HIV and substance use problems. METHODS: Studies were included if they evaluated service integration for substance use and HIV. We searched multiple databases from inception until October 2015. Articles were screened independently by

Integrating viral kinetics and population spread in a one health framework to explain variant-specific epidemic dynamics.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of modeling frameworks that integrate biological mechanisms with heterogeneous social contact patterns to accurately characterize variant-specific transmission. Motivated by a One Health perspective that connects human infection biology, behavioral dynamics, and environmental transmission factors, we present a data-integrated and mechanistic approach designed to support proactive risk assessment and public-health preparedness. While classical compartmental models offer essential baseline insight, their simplifying assumptions limit the represent
