Anxiety sensitivity and subjective social status in relation to anxiety and depressive symptoms and disorders among Latinos in primary care.

The present investigation examined the interactive effects of anxiety sensitivity and subjective social status in relation to anxiety and depressive symptoms and psychopathology among 143 Latinos (85.7% female; Mage=39.0, SD=10.9; 97.2% used Spanish as their first language) who attended a community-based primary healthcare clinic. Results indicated that the interaction between anxiety sensitivity and subjective social status was significantly associated with number of mood and anxiety disorders, panic, social anxiety, and depressive symptoms. The form of the significant interactions indicated

Cardiovascular psychophysiology.

Both environmental and predispositional factors are of importance in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular (CV) disease. In humans, it is diffi … ability of the hyper-reactivity construct. Studies of social hierarchies in animals have shown that social interactions produce pronounced psychophysiological responses. The existence of several differentiated CV response patterns may explain the contradictory findings of studies that only measure one or few physiological parameters. Deficient adolescent social behavior following early-life inflammation is ameliorated by augmentation of anandamide signaling.

Early-life inflammation has been shown to exert profound effects on brain development and behavior, including altered emotional behavior, st … injected with LPS on P14. In adolescence, rats were subjected to behavioral testing in a reciprocal social interaction paradigm as well as the open field. We quantified eCB levels in the amygdala of P14 and adolescent animals (anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol) as well as adolescent amygdaloid cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) binding site density and the hydrolytic …

Effect of prenatal valproic acid exposure on cortical morphology in female mice.

We have recently shown that prenatal valproic acid (VPA) exposure causes autism spectrum disorders-like behavioral abnormalities and Nissl-positive cell loss in both prefrontal and somatosensory cortices in male mice. We have also found that VPA-induced social interaction deficits are observed in male but not female offspring. This study demonstrated that the exposure to VPA at embryonic day 12.5 significantly decreased Nissl-positive cell numbers in the prefrontal cortex, but not in the somatosensory cortex, in female offspring. These findings suggest that VPA-induced morphological abnormalit…

Influence of Caregiver Input and Dyadic Arrangement on Naturalistic Communication Sampling for Children With Neurogenetic Syndromes.

PURPOSE: Natural communication samples are a useful tool for measuring social communication and language remotely via telehealth, particularly for children with low-incidence neurogenetic syndromes (NGS). The purpose of this study is to examine how dyadic factors (caregiver language input, dyadic positioning, and dyadic proximity) impact measures of social communication derived from remotely collected caregiver-child communication samples in children with and without NGS. METHOD: Participants included 72 young children and their caregivers (16 Angelman syndrome, 24 Down syndrome, 13 fragile X

Variable effects of social support by race, economic status, and disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Health status and disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other chronic diseases are strongly associated with social support, which suggests that enhanced social support in medical care might improve SLE outcome. There has been little or no study on identifying patients for whom social support would be most beneficial. It would allow practitioners to enable social support more effectively as a complement to disease management. METHODS: A retrospective cohort (200 patients with SLE from 5 centers), balanced by race and insurance status, was studied i

How place shapes diarrheal risk: An eco-social analysis of environmental and social infrastructures in riverine Indonesia.

Diarrheal disease remains strongly patterned by environmental and social inequalities in place-based riverine settings, where daily interaction with contaminated water environments shapes exposure risk. Guided by eco-social theory, this study examines how environmental and social infrastructures jointly structure diarrheal vulnerability in riverine communities of Jambi Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey of 463 adult household heads was integrated with river water quality assessment and analyzed using a parsimonious structural equation model to estimate pathways linking social capita

The contributions of social functioning and emotion dysregulation to depression severity in patients with depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Emotion dysregulation and social functioning are important predictors of depression severity. It remains unclear whether these factors independently or interactively contribute to depression severity amongst psychiatric patients with depressive disorders. METHOD: 340 psychiatric outpatients with a principal depressive disorder were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID). Participants' social functioning and depression severity were rated during the SCID evaluation, and emotion dysregulation was assessed concurrently using the Difficulties in Emotion

When people matter more than money: an ERPs study.

In the present study, we showed that, in a social gambling task, individuals are influenced more by the type of social interaction than by the pattern of gains and losses. More precisely, the neural responses, as well as the level of pleasantness/unpleasantness following gains and losses, are modulated by social interaction factors. Here we present an Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) study in which three groups of participants were compared. Subjects were engaged in gambling tasks differing with regard to social factors: in a first condition, there was no social context; in a second condition, …

Neural Tracking of Social Navigation in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: As we navigate changing social landscapes, maintaining maps of interpersonal dynamics can help guide our choices. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with social challenges that may affect the accumulation or application of social information. However, little is known about social cognitive mapping in autistic adults. METHODS: Herein, we investigated differences in social navigation among 122 adults with ASD, typical development (TD), and misophonia (MIS) (included as a clinical comparison group) using a social interaction task during functional magnetic resonance imaging…

Live agent preference and social action monitoring in the macaque mid-superior temporal sulcus region.

Mentalizing, the ability to infer the mental states of others, is a cornerstone of adaptive social intelligence. While functional brain mapp … ssociated with mentalizing. Here, we show that this is the case in aspects of a preference for live social interactions and in a theoretical framework of predictive coding. Macaque monkeys were trained to perform a turn-taking choice task with another real monkey partner sitting directly face-to-face or a filmed partner appearing in prerecorded videos. We found that …

Familiarity modulates social approach toward stressed conspecifics in female rats.

Familiarity between conspecifics may influence how social affective cues shape social behaviors. In a social affective preference test, experimental rats, when given the choice to explore an unfamiliar stressed or a naive adult, will avoid interaction with a stressed conspecific. To determine if familiarity would influence social interactions with stressed conspecifics, male and female test rats underwent 2 social affective preference tests in isosexual triads where an experimental rat was presented with a naïve and a stressed target conspecific who were either familiar (cagemate) or unfamilia…

Development of social skills in children: neural and behavioral evidence for the elaboration of cognitive models.

Social skills refer to a wide group of abilities that allow us to interact and communicate with others. Children learn how to solve social situations by predicting and understanding other's behaviors. The way in which humans learn to interact successfully with others encompasses a complex interaction between neural, behavioral, and environmental elements. These have a role in the accomplishment of positive developmental outcomes, including peer acceptance, academic achievement, and mental health. All these social abilities depend on widespread brain networks that are recently being studied by

Mapping the landscape of social behavior.

Social interaction is integral to animal behavior. However, we lack tools to describe it with quantitative rigor, limiting our understanding of its principles and neuropsychiatric disorders, like autism, that perturb it. Here, we present a technique for high-resolution 3D tracking of postural dynamics and social touch in freely interacting animals, solving the challenging subject occlusion and part assignment problems using 3D geometric reasoning, graph neural networks, and semi-supervised learning. We collected over 140 million 3D postures in interacting rodents, featuring new monogenic autis…

Ameliorating age-dependent effects of resveratrol on VPA-induced social impairments and anxiety-like behaviors in a rat model of neurodevelopmental disorder.

Although anxiety disorders, as well as difficulties in social interaction, are documented in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a neurodevelopmental disorder, the effectiveness of potential therapeutic procedures considering age and sex differences is under serious discussion. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of resveratrol (RSV) on anxiety-like behaviors and social interaction in juvenile and adult rats of both sex in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced autistic-like model. Prenatal exposure to VPA was associated with increased anxiety, also causing a significant reduc…
