Positive attributes in elderly people with different degrees of depression: a study based on network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Depression in aging may lead to loss of autonomy and worsening of comorbidities. Understanding how positive attributes contribute to healthier and happier aging has been one of the purposes of Positive Psychology. However, the literature still lacks studies that evaluate how depression in the elderly is related to constructs considered positive. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed comparing scores of constructs of spiritual well-being, social support, self-esteem, life satisfaction, affection, optimism, and hope in the elderly with minimal, mild, moderate, and severe depression a

Associations of Sex Work Modality Classifications with Condom and Substance Use Behaviors Among Women Who Exchange Sex for Drugs or Money - Four Metropolitan U.S. Cities, 2016.

Women who exchange sex for drugs or money (WES) are disproportionately affected by HIV, particularly in the United States. We used latent class analysis to identify distinct groups, or classes, of sex work modalities (ways in which women find their exchange sex partners) and assess differences between class membership and behaviors associated with HIV transmission. Data are from the 2016 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) cycle focused on heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV infection (HET). Four cities participated in a pilot study exploring a subset of WES. All participants (n =

Coordinated Information Generation and Mental Flexibility: Large-Scale Network Disruption in Children with Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes deficits in social cognition, communication, and executive function. Recent neuroimaging studies suggest that ASD disrupts the structural and functional organization of brain networks and, presumably, how they generate information. Here, we relate deficits in an aspect of cognitive control to network-level disturbances in information processing. We recorded magnetoencephalography while children with ASD and typically developing controls performed a set-shifting task designed to test mental flexibility. We used multiscale entropy (MSE) to estimate the rat

Independent Component Analysis of Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Pedophiles.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroimaging and other studies have changed the common view that pedophilia is a result of childhood sexual abuse and instead is a neurologic phenomenon with prenatal origins. Previous research has identified differences in the structural connectivity of the brain in pedophilia. AIM: To identify analogous differences in functional connectivity. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance images were recorded from three groups of participants while they were at rest: pedophilic men with a history of sexual offenses against children (n = 37) and two control groups: non-pedophilic men

Communicative Blame in Online Communication of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Computational Approach of Stigmatizing Cues and Negative Sentiment Gauged With Automated Analytic Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Information about a new coronavirus emerged in 2019 and rapidly spread around the world, gaining significant public attention and attracting negative bias. The use of stigmatizing language for the purpose of blaming sparked a debate. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify social stigma and negative sentiment toward the blameworthy agents in social communities. METHODS: We enabled a tailored text-mining platform to identify data in their natural settings by retrieving and filtering online sources, and constructed vocabularies and learning word representations from natural language

Altered Functional Connectivity and Small-World Network Properties in MDD With Daytime Sleepiness: Implications for Anhedonia.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 37.4% to 57.1% of people with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit symptoms of daytime sleepiness (DS). Patients with MDD with concurrent DS tend to have worse clinical outcomes and often experience severe anhedonia. As a key symptom of MDD, anhedonia is strongly associated with its severity. The aim of this study was to clarify the neuroimaging mechanisms of DS symptoms in MDD patients with anhedonia. METHODS: A total of 22 patients were recruited into the DS group (Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS] score ≥ 7), and 45 patients were included in the no DS group (No DS

Increased cortical thickness in a frontoparietal network in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is the second leading anxiety disorder. On the functional neurobiological level, specific brain regions involved in the processing of anxiety-laden stimuli and in emotion regulation have been shown to be hyperactive and hyper-responsive in SAD such as amygdala, insula and orbito- and prefrontal cortex. On the level of brain structure, prior studies on anatomical differences in SAD resulted in mixed and partially contradictory findings. Based on previous functional and anatomical models of SAD, this study examined cortical thickness in structural magnetic resonance

Exploring the Pathways of Resistance to ICE Deportation: A Preliminary Framework.

PURPOSE: This article provides a preliminary description of the pathways activists took to resist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation operations in a mid-sized southern U.S. city. The findings establish a preliminary framework to define the context of anti-deportation resistance and inform anti-oppressive social work practice strategies. METHOD: Using a qualitative case study design, content analysis was conducted on regional newspaper coverage alongside semi-structured interviews with a targeted sample of activist respondents to examine mechanisms of resistance. DISCUSSION

Brainstem as a developmental gateway to social attention.

BACKGROUND: Evolution preserves social attention due to its key role in supporting survival. Humans are attracted to social cues from infancy, but the neurobiological mechanisms for the development of social attention are unknown. An evolutionary-based, vertical-hierarchical theoretical model of self-regulation suggests that neonatal brainstem inputs are key for the development of well-regulated social attention. METHODS: Neonates born preterm (N = 44, GA 34 w.) were recruited and diagnosed at birth as a function of their auditory brainstem evoked responses (ABR). Participants enrolled in a p

Diverse social environments and 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of historically excluded racial/ethnic older adults: A latent class analysis of social integration.

PURPOSE: The association between social integration and mortality in older adults from historically excluded groups may not align with the patterns observed in predominately white samples. We modeled latent groups of social integration and their association with 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of older adults from historically excluded racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: In a sub-sample of a national cohort study of older adults, we used latent class analysis to model social integration using ten item indicators spanning couple status, network characteristics, and neighborhood and communit

Neural correlates of attentional control in social anxiety disorder: the impact of early-life adversity and DNA methylation.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder is characterized by intense fear and avoidance of social interactions and scrutiny by others. Although alterations in attentional control seem to play a central role in the psychopathology of social anxiety disorder, the neural underpinnings in prefrontal brain regions have not yet been fully clarified. METHODS: The present study used functional MRI in participants (age 18-50 yr) with social anxiety disorder (n = 42, 31 female) and without (n = 58, 33 female). It investigated the interrelation of the effects of social anxiety disorder and early-life adversi

Social judgments, frontal asymmetry, and aggressive behavior in young children: A replication study using EEG.

Early in their lives young children are confronted with social judgments by peers. Previous studies have shown that in adults negative social judgments are associated with more aggressive behavior. However, little is known about the relation between social judgments and aggressive behavior, or the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms, in early childhood. We developed the Social Network Aggression Task - Early Childhood (SNAT-EC) to examine the mediating role of frontal EEG asymmetry in the relation between social judgment and aggressive behavior in 4-6 year old children. To replicate our findi

Social Impacts Among Participants in HIV Vaccine Trial Network (HVTN) Preventive HIV Vaccine Trials.

BACKGROUND: Given the persistent stigma and discrimination against HIV worldwide, preventive HIV vaccine trials face unique challenges. Negative social impacts (NSIs)-problems that HIV vaccine trial participants face in many different spheres of their lives related to trial participation-have received a great deal of attention. Beneficial social impacts (BSIs)-perceived benefits experienced by a participant and resulting from their trial participation-are a critical component of participants' experiences, yet they have received little attention. SETTING: All HIV Vaccine Trials Network trial p

Revising Career Goals on LinkedIn: The Role of Career-Related Social Comparison and Goal Discrepancy.

Professional networking platforms provide opportunities for career development but may also encourage career-related social comparison. This study examined whether the relationship between LinkedIn use and career goal revision is explained by career-related social comparison and perceived career goal discrepancy. Data from 188 LinkedIn users were analyzed using correlation and serial mediation analysis. More intensive LinkedIn use was associated with more frequent career-related social comparison, which was related to greater perceived career goal discrepancy and, in turn, stronger career goal

Social and emotional skills for nurturing parenting: A qualitative examination.

Social and emotional skills develop within cultural contexts and shape parenting behaviors, yet little work has examined the specific skills parents themselves consider important for parenting, or the factors they perceive as supporting these skills, in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Centering parents' own conceptualizations, this two-phase descriptive qualitative study with 54 parents living in Colombia combined an initial phase of focus groups and individual interviews with a second phase of targeted individual interviews, and used thematic analysis to explore the social and emoti

Altered Brain Network Segregation in Fragile X Syndrome Revealed by Structural Connectomics.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder, is associated with significant behavioral, social, and neurocognitive deficits. Understanding structural brain network topology in FXS provides an important link between neurobiological and behavioral/cognitive symptoms of this disorder. We investigated the connectome via whole-brain structural networks created from group-level morphological correlations. Participants included 100 individuals: 50 with FXS and 50 with typical development, age 11-23 years. Results indicated alterati
