Art as a scaffold for social cognition.

The idea that art connects us to others is culturally compelling, yet empirical evidence linking art engagement to social cognition remains mixed across paradigms, methods, and timescales. We develop the thesis that art functions as a scaffold for social cognition, rather than a direct intervention on social-cognitive abilities. From this perspective, art structures the conditions under which social cognition unfolds by shaping whether individuals engage with socially meaningful content, how deeply they become involved, and whether they return to similar experiences over time. The scaffold mod

Withdrawn and Acting out?: Early Adolescents' Social Avoidance and Externalizing Problems.

Relative to other motivations of social withdrawal (i.e., shyness, unsociability), social avoidance is understudied. Furthermore, the relation between social avoidance and externalizing problems seldom has been investigated despite reasons to expect an association. We examined the association between social avoidance and externalizing problems using a sample of early adolescents in the United States using parents' reports (N = 294; 54.1% boys; M age = 12.43 years). Supporting our hypotheses, structural equation models indicated that social avoidance positively predicted concurrent externalizin

We know what we need: Older adults' and stakeholders' perspectives on ageing, health, and wellbeing in Pakistan.

The rapid increase in the older adult population worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Pakistan, raises critical challenges for healthcare, social support, and policy planning. Older adults in LMICs, especially in culturally diverse regions like Sindh, Pakistan, often face limited access to healthcare, economic insecurity, and social isolation. These challenges highlight the need to understand ageing in this context and explore potential solutions at multiple levels of the socio-ecological model. This qualitative descriptive study used focus group discussions (

The world according to girls: a qualitative study of school, work and identity among adolescent girls and young women living with HIV in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living with HIV in Ghana face multiple intersecting forms of marginalisation. Beyond the clinical management of HIV, little is known about how they construct meaning, navigate identity and imagine their futures within structural contexts shaped by stigma, gender inequity, economic precarity and colonial legacies. OBJECTIVE: To explore how AGYW living with HIV in Ghana understand and negotiate their social identities in work and school. We then aimed to understand how their lived experiences at school and work are shaped by broader systems of

General and transgender-specific quality of life in trans persons assigned female at birth: validation of the Essen Transgender Quality of Life-Inventory.

BACKGROUND: Transgenderism has always been part of society, with some individuals experiencing gender dysphoria (GD). When present, it is associated with diminished quality of life (QoL), along with minority stress, compared to the cisgender population. AIM: The primary objective of this study was the validation of the Essen Transgender Quality of Life-Inventory (ETLI), originally designed for assigned male at birth (AMAB) transgender individuals, in the German population on those assigned female at birth (AFAB). METHODS: A multi-center survey study with 139 participants was conducted. The a

Differences in Established Joint Attention in Hearing-Hearing and Hearing-Deaf Mother-Child Dyads: Associations With Social Competence, Settings, and Tasks.

The authors examined relations among observed joint attention, maternal report of child's social competence, setting (home vs. laboratory), task (unstructured vs. semi-structured), and dyad type [hearing mother-hearing child (n = 55, Mage  = 25.8 months) vs. hearing mother-deaf child (n = 27, Mage  = 26.9 months)]. Hearing child dyads scored higher on joint attention during unstructured tasks, especially in their home environment. Hearing child dyads displayed similar joint attention to deaf toddler dyads when they engaged in a semi-structured task, but higher on these measures during unstruct

USING SOCIAL NETWORK INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE MENTALLY ILL CLIENTS' WELL-BEING.

This paper reviews empirical evidence showing that the structures of the social networks of mentally ill clients influence both their well-being and their use of mental health services. Network interventions that might help clients better address network-related problems, and might help their families improve relationships and prevent caretaker's burn-out are presented. A case illustration will demonstrate how practitioners can assess a client's social network, involve the client's family in treatment, evaluate that treatment, and select tailored interventions. This case will emphasize both ho

[The influence of the type and level of aggression on homicidal behaviour].

A comparative analysis carried out on the type and level of aggressiveness in 105 perpetrators of homicide shows that in those assessed there is a lack of homogeneity in the personality structure, the developmental factors which determine the more stable mechanism of behavior, the course and the level of socialization, and the depth of psychopathological disturbance. Aggression understood as a permanent readiness to react to external stimuli and situations by using open and direct aggression characterizes the perpetrator with a disturbed socialization process. A deep level of hostility of the

Methamphetamine as a Social Necessity: Perspectives from Chinese Female Drug Users.

Guided by the drug career and normalization thesis, this study highlights the inherently social nature of methamphetamine (meth) use, with a particular focus on the pivotal role of meth-use networks among Chinese female drug users. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 34 female drug users to explore their social experiences with meth use. Thematic analysis revealed that the influence of close female friends and the ready availability of meth contribute to its emergence as a social necessity throughout these women's drug trajectories. Participants often initiated meth use

Effects of Living Alone on Social Capital and Health Among Older Adults in China.

Social capital has been connected with positive health outcomes across countries, including China. Given the rise in the number of seniors living alone, there is a need to examine the health benefits of social capital, accounting for living arrangements. Data from the 2005 Chinese General Social Survey were used to test research hypotheses. Controlling for demographics, elders living alone possessed similar level of social capital compared with elders living with others. While bonding and linking social capital were significant factors in urban areas and linking social capital was a significan

The prognosis and incidence of social phobia in an elderly population. A 5-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prognosis and incidence of social fears and phobia in an elderly population sample followed for 5 years. METHOD: A general population sample (N = 612) of non-demented men (baseline age 70) and women (baseline age 70 and 78-86) was investigated in 2000-2001 and in 2005-2006 with semi-structured psychiatric examinations including the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale, and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Social phobia was diagnosed according to the DSM-IV criteria. RESULTS: Among nine individuals with DSM-IV social phobia in 2000, 5 (55.6

Social phobia as a comorbid condition in sex offenders with paraphilia or impulse control disorder.

Studies on the prevalence of social anxiety in sex offenders show mixed results. This may be due to social anxiety being heightened only in diagnostic subgroups of sex offenders, namely in paraphiliacs. In study 1, 72 mentally disordered sexual delinquents and 30 controls were screened for social anxiety with the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale by Mattick and Clarke (German versions). In study 2, 55 mentally disordered sexual delinquents were diagnosed with a structured clinical interview. In both studies, sex offenders were categorized as either paraphilic or impu

How the rural risk environment underpins hepatitis C risk: Qualitative findings from rural southern Illinois, United States.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has increased among persons who inject drugs (PWID) in the United States with disproportionate burden in rural areas. We use the Risk Environment framework to explore potential economic, physical, social, and political determinants of hepatitis C in rural southern Illinois. METHODS: Nineteen in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with PWID from August 2019 through February 2020 (i.e., pre-COVID-19 pandemic) and four with key informants who professionally worked with PWID. Interviews were recorded, professionally transcribed, and coded

Strengths Knowledge Scale (SKS) and Strengths Use Scale (SUS): Revisiting Psychometric Properties and Gender Invariance in the General Spanish Population.

The Strengths Knowledge Scale (SKS) and the Strengths Use Scale (SUS) are the most widely used instruments to measure strengths knowledge and strengths use, yet their psychometric properties have not been examined in the general Spanish population and the factor structure of the SUS remains inconclusive. This study examines the factor structure, reliability, construct validity, and gender invariance of both scales in 574 Spanish adults (M = 33.35, SD = 14.89). Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), and measurement invariance an

The dimensional structure of internalizing psychopathology: Relation to diagnostic categories.

Recent approaches aim to represent the dimensional structure of psychopathology, but relatively little research has rigorously tested sub-dimensions within internalizing psychopathology. This study tests pre-registered models of the dimensional structure of internalizing psychopathology, and their relations with current and lifetime depressive and anxiety disorders diagnostic data, in adult samples harmonized across three sites (n=427). Across S-1 bifactor and hierarchical models, we found converging evidence for both general and specific internalizing dimensions. Depression, generalized anxie

Response variability reveals hidden social-category effects in facial-expression categorization.

The "happy-face advantage" (HFA)-faster categorization of happy versus fearful expressions-is typically established using mean reaction times (RTs), which obscure the structure of the RT distribution. The present research examined how facial expression and social-category cues influence emotion categorization using ex-Gaussian modelling, decomposing RTs into mean (μ), variability (σ), and slow-tail responding (τ). Ex-Gaussian modelling revealed that expression effects were distributed across distinct components of the RT distribution. Whereas mean RT (μ) replicated the happy-face advantage, σ

Construct validity of dimensions of adaptive behavior: a multitrait-multimethod evaluation.

The construct validity of four dimensions of adaptive and maladaptive behavior was investigated using the multitrait-multimethod matrix procedure of Campbell and Fiske (1959). Measures of four traits--cognitive competence, social competence, social maladaption, and personal maladaption--were obtained on a sample of 157 persons with moderate, severe, or profound mental retardation using each of three methods of measurement--standardized assessment instrument, day shift staff ratings, and evening shift staff ratings. Applying the Campbell and Fiske rules of thumb and recently proposed structural

The SPC model as a heuristic tool to better understand autism spectrum disorder and other structural diagnosis in psychiatry and psychotherapy.

Both autism and the broader autism phenotype represent stable mental features over time that often lead to typical psychosocial problem patterns such as bullying, interpersonal conflicts at work and at home, or social withdrawal. These patterns may in turn cause specific temporary medical conditions such as states of tension, agitation, mutism, depression, or psychosis. When presenting to psychiatry or psychotherapy patients generally do not complain about autism, but rather about depression, interpersonal conflicts, and psychosocial difficulties. They may also complain about maladaptive behav

The dental anxiety scale (DAS) - psychometric properties and longitudinal findings among middle-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: The Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) is a well-established instrument for assessing dental anxiety. While numerous cross-sectional studies have examined the DAS, longitudinal research investigating age-related changes, reliability, validity over time, associations with mental and physical health, and demographic determinants remains limited. Furthermore, the possibility of longitudinal changes in its factor structure has received limited attention. METHODS: In 2013/2014, N = 329 German adults (53.6% female, mean age 40.20 years) and in 2019/2020, N = 323 adults (55.7% female, mean age 4
