Transient ligation of umbilical vessels elevates placental tissue oxygen index (TOI) values measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in clawn miniature pig animal model.

We recently found a significant elevation in placental tissue oxygen index (TOI) values in cases of fetal growth restriction using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), indicating high oxygenation in the placental tissue. We hypothesized that insufficient fetoumbilical blood flow is causatively associated with high oxygenation levels in placental tissue. We transiently (for 15 sec) ligated the whole umbilicus, umbilical arteries, or veins of pregnant Clawn miniature pigs (102-113 days of gestation) and assessed the changes in TOI values of the placenta and fetus. The ligation significantly increa

Head-up tilt and hyperventilation produce similar changes in cerebral oxygenation and blood volume: an observational comparison study using frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy.

PURPOSE: During anesthesia, maneuvers which cause the least disturbance of cerebral oxygenation with the greatest decrease in intracranial pressure would be most beneficial to patients with intracranial hypertension. Both head-up tilt (HUT) and hyperventilation are used to decrease brain bulk, and both may be associated with decreases in cerebral oxygenation. In this observational study, our null hypothesis was that the impact of HUT and hyperventilation on cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2) and cerebral blood volume (CBV) are comparable. METHODS: Surgical patients without neurological

Cerebral oxygen saturation evaluated by near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS) in pregnant women during caesarean section - a promising new method of maternal monitoring.

Time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS-20) measures tissue oxygen saturation (%) by evaluating the absolute concentrations of oxygenated, deoxygenated and total haemoglobin based on measurement of the transit time of individual photons through a tissue of interest. We measured tissue oxygen saturation in the prefrontal lobes of the brain by TRS-20 in eighteen pregnant women during caesarean section. In a case of placenta previa, massive bleeding immediately decreased cerebral oxygen saturation from 67·2% to 54·2%, but did not alter peripheral tissue oxygenation as measured by pulse oximetry. LR3-LI4 needling side and configuration are associated with phase-specific cortical activation and network organization: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Whether dominant-side, non-dominant-side, or bilateral acupuncture produces comparable cortical activation remains unresolved. This study compared phase-specific cortical hemodynamic responses across these configurations at LR3-LI4 using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS: In total, 53 healthy right-handed adults were randomized to dominant-side acupuncture (DS, n = 13), bilateral (BI, n = 15), non-dominant-side stimulation (NDS, n = 14), or sham (SH, n = 11). Cortical activity was measured across bilateral prefrontal, motor, and somatosensory regions during ba

Evidence for Relationship Between Speech Perception in Noise and Spectrotemporal Modulation Processing in Children With Mild Bilateral Hearing Loss: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

OBJECTIVES: Children with mild bilateral hearing loss (CHL), defined as having thresholds between 20 and 40 dB HL, experience difficulties conversing in adverse acoustic conditions with background noise, despite having near-normal speech perception in quiet. Mixed evidence of hearing aid benefit among CHL has led to guidelines that emphasize individualized management, making it challenging for clinicians to suggest intervention options. The overarching goal of this study was to investigate the influence of suprathreshold neural processing on speech perception in noise and how it is influenced

Inter-session reliability of prefrontal cortex functional near-infrared spectroscopy measures during dual-task walking protocols of different duration in stroke survivors and healthy controls.

To advance understanding and support recovery of walking abilities after stroke, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising tool to quantify brain activity during walking. However, the reliability of fNIRS-derived parameters recorded during walking has not been sufficiently studied. This study aimed to determine the relative and absolute inter-session reliability of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin concentrations (HbO/HbR) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during two different motor-cognitive dual-task walking protocols. These protocols consisted of one 2 min and four 30 s walking inter

The Effect of Post-Spinal Hypotension on Cerebral Oxygenation Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Neonatal Outcomes in Full Term Parturients Undergoing Lower Segment Caesarean Section.

Background Cerebral autoregulation is a homeostatic process that maintains constant cerebral blood flow during hypotension produced by spinal anesthesia. Beyond the auto-regulation range of mean blood pressure (MBP), the brain is vulnerable to ischemia and hyperperfusion-induced cerebral edema when blood pressure is above the auto-regulatory threshold. Spinal hypotension may cause a fall in regional cerebral oxygenation (C-rSO₂) below the lower limit of autoregulation in some patients. In this study, we focused on finding the relationship between C-rSO₂ changes measured by near infrared spectr

Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Exercise Restores Appetite and Prefrontal Brain Activity to Images of Food Among Persons Dependent on Methamphetamine: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

The brain prefrontal control system is critical to successful recovery from substance use disorders, and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) regulates striatal reward-related processes. Substance-dependent individuals exhibit an increased response to drug rewards and decreased response to natural, nondrug rewards. Short-term aerobic exercise can ameliorate craving and inhibitory deficits in methamphetamine users, but the effect of exercise on food reward is unknown. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure the effects of moderate- and high-intensity short-term aerobic e

Cybersickness-related changes in brain hemodynamics: A pilot study comparing transcranial Doppler and near-infrared spectroscopy assessments during a virtual ride on a roller coaster.

Our aim was to assess cerebral blood flow changes during cybersickness. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) were used separately in two independent experiments. In both studies, a 15-min virtual roller coaster ride was used as a provocative visual stimulus. Subjective nausea ratings were obtained at 1 min intervals. The TCD study was performed in 14 healthy subjects (8 males and 6 females); in this study we also measured heart rate and arterial pressure. In a separate study a 52-channel NIRS device (Hitachi ETG-4000) was used to monitor activated brain r

Changes in cerebral oxygen consumption and high-energy phosphates during early recovery in hypoxic-ischemic piglets: a combined near-infrared and magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers the ability to assess brain function at the bedside of critically ill neonates. Our group previously demonstrated a persistent reduction in the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO(2)) after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in newborn piglets. The purpose of this current study was to determine the causes of this reduction by combining NIRS with magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure high-energy metabolites and diffusion-weighted imaging to measure cellular edema. Nine piglets were exposed to 30 min of HI and nine piglets served as controls. Proton and

Near infrared spectroscopy to evaluate the effect of a hybrid exercise programme on peripheral muscle metabolism in patients with intermittent claudication: an exploratory PROSECO-IC sub study.

Intermittent claudication (IC) is characterized by decreased blood flow and oxygen delivery to the lower-limb muscles, resulting in pain and impaired functional capacity. This study evaluated the effects of a 12-week hybrid walking intervention on muscle oxygenation and functional capacity in 38 patients with IC (Rutherford I-III). Functional capacity was evaluated by means of two different treadmill test protocols and a six-minute walk test (6MWT). Muscle oxygenation was assessed during the treadmill tests using near-infrared spectroscopy. After the intervention, maximal walking distance was

The nature of haem a3 in the oxidized state of cytochrome c oxidase. Evidence from low-temperature magnetic-circular-dichroism spectroscopy in the near infrared region.

The magnetic-circular-dichroism (m.c.d.) spectra of oxidized 'resting' bovine cytochrome c oxidase and the cyanide-inhibited form are reported at 5.15 T and at 4.2 K along with m.c.d. magnetization curves plotted at selected wavelengths. In both spectra there are features at 790nm and 1564nm due to Cua and haem a respectively, the e.p.r.-detectable components of the enzyme. There is a new peak at 1946nm only in the spectrum of the cyanide-inhibited enzyme. Arguments are advanced that assign this to low-spin ferric haem a3 bridged to Cua3, thereby forming a ferromagnetically coupled pair of met
