The Impact of Environment Design Bias on Working Memory.

Extended Reality (XR) is a powerful tool for training, education, and gaming. Research suggests that gender differences exist in XR environments including women having a lower sense of subjective presence and being more susceptible to motion sickness. However, the underrepresentation of women both as participants and researchers could lead to potential design biases, impacting the accuracy and inclusivity of XR systems. This work investigates subtle design differences in virtual environments on women's performance on a cognitive test. Non-male participants (n = 40) completed the Stroop Interfe

Exploring Whether Weight-Related Cues Affect Food Intake in Older Adults with Dementia.

PURPOSE: Past research has shown that exposure to the image of a slim person reduces food consumption among young adults. However, it remains unknown whether this paradigm could be adapted and applied to increase food intake among older adults with dementia by exposing them to the image of a higher-weight person to mitigate weight loss and malnutrition. The present study explored whether weight-related visual cues affect the amount of food consumed by older adults with dementia. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: In the experiment, twenty-one elderly people with dementia living in a nursing home were

Intracranial Pressure Fluctuations Mimicking Seizures in a Patient With Shunt Malfunction.

This case describes a patient with new onset of multiple daily paroxysmal stereotyped episodes with alteration of arousal and responsiveness. These episodes pose a diagnostic challenge because they may be misdiagnosed as epileptic seizures because of stereotypy, similarities in semiology, risk factors such as structural abnormality, and rhythmic EEG pattern. A 20-year-old woman with Chiari malformation, spina bifida, and ventriculoperitoneal shunt presented with paroxysmal episodes of change in responsiveness, concerning for seizure activity. Anti-seizure medication was started without amelior

Gastrodin - A potential drug used for the treatment of Tourette Syndrome.

Gastrodin (Gas) represents the major active component of Gastrodia elata, a Chinese herb. Clinically, Gas is widely used for its sedative, anticonvulsive and neuroprotective properties. This work aimed to assess Gas for its efficacy in Tourette Syndrome (TS) treatment. Twenty-four rats were randomized to the blank control (n = 6) and experimental (n = 18) groups. The experimental group was administered continuous injection of 3, 3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) intraperitoneally for 7 days, and subdivided into the IDPN + NS, IDPN + Hal, and IDPN + Gas groups (n = 6). The control and IDPN + NS gr

The progression of severe behavior disorder in young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Behavior disorders, such as self-injurious, stereotypic, and aggressive behavior are common among individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. While we have learned much about those behaviors over the past few decades, longitudinal research that looks at developmental trajectory has been rare. This study was designed to examine the trajectory of these three forms of severe behavior disorders over a one year time period. The behaviors were measured on two dimensions: frequency of occurrence and severity. Participants were 160 infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays

B-cell receptor configuration and adverse cytogenetics are associated with autoimmune hemolytic anemia in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The development of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is associated with specific biological features. The occurrence of AIHA was hereby investigated in a retrospective series of 585 CLL patients with available immunoglobulin heavy chain variable (IGHV) gene status. AIHA occurred in 73 patients and was significantly associated with an IGHV unmutated (UM) status (P < 0.0001) and unfavorable [del(17)(p13) and del(11)(q23)] cytogenetic lesions (P < 0.0001). Stereotyped HCDR3 sequences were identified in 29.6% of cases and were similarly represen

Is there a role for antigen selection in mantle cell lymphoma? Immunogenetic support from a series of 807 cases.

We examined 807 productive IGHV-IGHD-IGHJ gene rearrangements from mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) cases, by far the largest series to date. The IGHV gene repertoire was remarkably biased, with IGHV3-21, IGHV4-34, IGHV1-8, and IGHV3-23 accounting for 46.3% of the cohort. Eighty-four of 807 (10.4%) cases, mainly using the IGHV3-21 and IGHV4-34 genes, were found to bear stereotyped heavy complementarity-determining region 3 (VH CDR3) sequences and were placed in 38 clusters. Notably, the MCL stereotypes were distinct from those reported for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Based on somatic hypermutation

An islet of social ability in Asperger Syndrome: judging social attributes from faces.

We asked adults with Asperger Syndrome to judge pictorial stimuli in terms of certain social stereotypes to evaluate to what extent they have access to this type of social knowledge. Sixteen adults with Asperger Syndrome and 24 controls, matched for age and intelligence, were presented with sets of faces, bodies and objects, which had to be rated on a 7-point scale in terms of trustworthiness, attractiveness, social status, and age, or, in the case of objects, price. Despite impaired performance on two important aspects of social cognition (second-order mentalizing and face recognition) the so

[Rapid tolerance to ethanol and high voluntary alcohol consumption in mice selected for brain weight].

Mice of two strains selected for small and large brain weight (SB and LB, respectively) had free access to 10% alcohol and water within three months. At the end of this period, they consumed alcohol in daily dose of 6.9 +/- 0.9 and 7.5 +/- 0.8 g/kg, respectively. After a period of imposed three-day abstinence, the alcohol consumption by the mice of these strains increased by 68.6 and 49.3%, respectively. Exploratory behavior of independent groups of mice from these strains was studied in the closed cross-maze. The animals were injected with ethanol (2.4 g/kg, i.p.) or vehicle twice with a week

Intracerebroventricular administration of cholecystokinin reduces stereotypy in dopamine-supersensitive rats.

Cholecystokinin (CCK-8) coexists with dopamine in some neurons and modulates dopaminergic neurotransmission. In the present study we determined the effect of CCK-8 on stereotyped behavior in supersensitive dopaminergic system. Adult male Wistar rats, weighing 200-250 g, were used. Dopaminergic supersensitivity was induced by long-term haloperidol (HAL) treatment (30 days: 1.0 mg/kg twice a day). Seventy-two hours after HAL withdrawal animals received CCK-8 (14.5 nmol/5 microliters) or saline intracerebroventricularly (icv) before being tested for apomorphine (APO, 0.6 mg/kg, sc)-induced stereo

Behavioural responses to the selective D1-dopamine receptor agonist R-SK&F 38393 and the selective D2-agonist RU 24213 in young compared with aged rats.

1. In aged male Sprague-Dawley rats (22 months) with a selective loss of D2- but not of D1-dopamine receptors, stereotyped behaviour induced by 0.5 mg kg-1 apomorphine was increased and prolonged in comparison with young (4 month) counterparts. This suggested a pharmacokinetic effect rather than a pharmacodynamic change. 2. The syndrome of non-stereotyped behavioural responses to the selective D1-agonist R-SK&F 38393, 1.25-20.0 mg kg-1, was unchanged in aged vs young animals, but the topography of individual behaviours constituting this overall syndrome was altered with aging. 3. Role of the substantia nigra in audiogenic seizures: a neuroethological analysis in the rat.

The audiogenic crisis (AC) includes an initial phase of bursts of circular, stereotyped running. Since it has been shown that the nigrostriatal system is important in the control of lesion- and drug-induced stereotyped rotational behavior, the effects of unilateral electrolytic lesions of the substantia nigra (SN) on the AC were investigated. Behavior was recorded using a detailed ethogram by means of systematic observational techniques and analyzed quantitatively in terms of sequential structure by multivariate statistical methods. An index of susceptibility was computed on the basis of the f

Just-in-Time Strategies to Reduce the Effect of Interviewer Bias During Trainee Recruitment.

Bias impacts all aspects of medical trainee applications, from grades to narrative reviews. Interviews provide an avenue to become acquainted with applicants beyond their written application, but even the most egalitarian interviewers are subject to implicit biases, including those who hold marginalized identities themselves. Simply building awareness around implicit bias is inadequate to reduce the effect. Here, 5 evidence-informed strategies are presented that can be implemented by faculty on-the-spot to mitigate the impact of implicit bias during the short interview interaction: individuati

Functional analysis of maladaptive behaviors: Rule as a transitive conditioned motivating operation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of a staff-delivered rule on the occurrence of challenging behavior (stereotypic touching) of an adult with severe intellectual disabilities. Four experimental functional analysis conditions were developed: (a) attention, (b) rule+attention, (c) rule only, and (d) control. Results showed that the percentage of intervals in which stereotypic touching responses (STR) occurred was greater within the experimental condition where a rule statement was embedded with contingent attention. Results are discussed in light of the plasticity of functional a

[Care for the patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration].

In frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), which primarily involves the front of the brain, characteristic psychiatric symptoms and disordered behaviors, such as disinhibition and stereotypical behaviors, often appear in the foreground at the initial stages of the disease. It is therefore an extremely difficult disease to treat. However, unlike diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, which involve general dementia, there is a clear dissociation between the conserved and disordered functions; therefore, it is possible to enhance the conserved functions and simultaneously modify the disordered f

Adults' versus children's perceptions of a child with autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The present study examined public perceptions toward children with autism or with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A convenience sample was used consisting of 30 children (7-12-year-olds) and 30 adults. Participants read a stereotyped scenario featuring either a child with autism, a child with ADHD, or a normal child. Child participants were significantly more likely than adults to (a) express dislike/avoidance toward a child described with either stereotypic autistic or ADHD behaviors, and (b) perceive the child with ADHD as unlike themselves. However, child participants and a

Haloperidol treatment with chronically medicated residents: dose effects on clinical behavior and reinforcement contingencies.

Twenty residents, most of whom had previously received neuroleptic maintenance therapy, were assessed in a double blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study of haloperidol. Haloperidol was administered in standardized doses of .025 and .05 mg/kg/day, for 3 weeks each. Clinical changes were confined to a slight reduction in ratings of stereotypic behavior and an increase in gross-motor activity under the high dose. Under reinforcement conditions, there was a marked tendency for instruction following performance to improve under the high dose condition. Subjects were divided according to degree

Effect of naloxone and morphine on dopamine agonist-induced stereotypy in rats and guinea pigs.

Naloxone (0.80 mg/kg) and morphine (7.5 mg/kg) were given to rats or guinea pigs with increasing doses of amphetamine (0.5-6.0 mg/kg) to determine their respective effects on amphetamine-induced stereotypy. In contrast to the inhibiting and potentiating effect of these agents on apomorphine-induced stereotyped behavior, naloxone enhanced and morphine markedly attenuated amphetamine-induced stereotypy. Since other investigators have reported that drugs inhibiting release of dopamine block amphetamine-induced stereotypy and enhance apomorphine-induced stereotypy, whilst compounds stimulating the
