The effects of nandrolone phenylpropionate and decanoate, androstanolone and testosterone propionate, in daily doses from 3 to 100 micrograms during a month, on the diffuse hair wave seen after gonadectomy, were studied in male C 57 mice. The androgenic effects upon anterior prostate weight and the anabolic effects upon levator ani muscle and submaxillary gland weight, were also evaluated. The four steroid compounds used in these experiments had a strong inhibitory effect upon the hair growth waves which was stronger in the anabolic steroids than with testosterone propionate.

We present a case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis that demonstrated a remarkable response to steroids. The patient, a 73-year-old man, complained of left flank pain and weight loss. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated and both CRP and antinuclear factor were positive. To determine the necessity for maintenance dosages of prednisone in the management of heart transplant patients, a retrospective study was made of 86 patients undergoing orthotopic heart transplantation and two patients having heart-lung transplantation from June 1985 through October 1986. Seven women and nine men, aged 27-59 years (mean 45), with lumbar pain and sciatica had epidural blocks once with 80 mg of depo-medrol and lidocaine in individual doses. All had static and kinetic lumbar pain up to 16 years and all but four also pain radiating to the lower limbs. Radiculography was "negative" in all patients, but three exhibited minor neurological abnormalities. Five patients had had a lumbar hemilaminectomy previously. Fifty-eight previously untreated adults with minimal-change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS), who had a mean follow-up period of 35.8 months, were studied with regard to their response to alternate-day steroid therapy. The nephrotic syndrome in 54 patients (93%) remitted by 12 weeks and patients continued to be in remission at 16 weeks. Of the 54 patients, 8 (14.8%) had frequent relapses and 9 (16.6%) had infrequent relapses. No serious complications as a result of steroid therapy were encountered.

Since 1977, 22 patients with hereditary angioneurotic oedema have been treated with androgenic-anabolic steroids (danazol or stanozolol). The most frequent adverse reactions were myalgia, weight increase, changes in libido, and menstrual disorders in women. The influence of anabolic steroids plus phenformin on the course of disease was studied in patients suffering from occlusive vascular diseases. In arteriosclerosis obliterans of the lower limbs the combined therapy led to a higher percentage of improvement than the control group showed.
