Antibody-mediated complement C3b/iC3b binding to group B Streptococcus in paired mother and baby serum samples in a refugee population on the Thailand-Myanmar border.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) is the leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis. In this study, we determined antibody-mediated deposition of complement C3b/iC3b onto the bacterial cell surface of GBS serotypes Ia, Ib, II, III, and V. This was determined for 520 mother and umbilical cord serum sample pairs obtained at the time of birth from a population on the Thailand-Myanmar border. Antibody-mediated deposition of complement C3b/iC3b was detected to at least one serotype in 91% of mothers, despite a known carriage rate in this population of only 12%. Antibody-me…

Group B streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome: report of a case and purification of an associated pyrogenic toxin.

A patient with streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (TSLS) caused by Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus) is described. The patient had all of the defining criteria for toxic shock syndrome (TSS), including fever, hypotension, erythematous rash, desquamation, and involvement of multiple organs. Neither Staphylococcus aureus nor group A streptococci were recovered, but vaginal and urine cultures yielded group B streptococci. The group B streptococcal isolate gave negative results in antibody tests for the production of TSS toxin 1, staphylococcal enterotoxins, and streptococcal s…

Inhibition of group B streptococcal growth by IFN gamma-activated human glioblastoma cells.

Group B streptococci are the most important bacteria inducing neonatal septicemia and meningitis. The aim of this study was to assess the role of IFNgamma in the induction of anti-microbial effector mechanisms in human brain tumor cells. Different human glioblastoma/astrocytoma cell lines, stimulated with IFNgamma, restricted the growth of group B streptococci. In addition, we found that TNF alpha is able to enhance the IFNgamma-mediated anti-microbial effect. In contrast to group B streptococci, other bacteria which are also capable of inducing meningitis, like E. coli and all but one of the

Minimum number of bacteria needed for antigen detection by counterimmunoelectrophoresis: in vivo and in vitro studies.

Threshold concentrations of Streptococcus pneumoniae type 3, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and Streptococcus sp. group B type Ib required for positive counterimmunoelectrophoresis reactions were determined in vivo and in vitro. Animals were infected intraperitoneally with various concentrations of microorganisms: adult mice with S. pneumoniae, suckling rats with H. influenzae, and 3-week-old mice with Streptococcus sp. group B. At 24 h after infection a minimum blood concentration of 10(3) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml was needed for S. pneumoniae or H. influenzae before antigen was detected

[Haemolytic streptococci of the serological group B and pneumococci - new life-threatening bacteria in newborn wards (author's transl)].

In 1978 353 premature and mature newborns were admitted to our neonatal and intensive care unit. 34 children developed bacterial infections. B-streptococci were the offending organisms in 6 cases, pneumococci in 1 case, 5 of these 7 infections were of the early-onset type, 2 of the late-onset type. The early-onset type disease manifests itself by respiratory distress and shock. It is transmitted vertically from mother to child before or during birth. 3 of our 5 affected children died. The late-onset type disease occurs after 5-10 days, is transmitted as horizontal, mostly nosocomial infection,

The highest frequency of hPJI was observed for S. aureus (9.6%) and Streptococcus agalactiae (9.3%). Bacteraemia with other species than S. aureus or S. agalactiae was associated with a lower hPJI risk. CONCLUSION: The observational ri …

Preparation of the monoclonal antibody against Nile tilapia Igλ and study on the Igλ+ B cell subset in Nile tilapia.

A typical Ig consists of two heavy and two light chain … lly, we detected an increase in the level of specific antibodies against the surface antigen-Sip of Streptococcus agalactiae in serum after S. agalactiae infection, indicating that mouse anti-tilapia Igλ mAb can be used to detect the antibody level after immunization of Nile tilapia, which lays a foundation for the evaluation of immunization effect of tilapia vaccine.

Sepsis in previously healthy neonates discharged home after delivery in Soweto, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of data on the aetiology of neonatal sepsis in sub-Saharan Africa. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the incidence, aetiology and outcomes of physician-diagnosed sepsis in hospitalised neonates who had previously been discharged home after delivery in Soweto, South Africa. METHODS: A retrospective review using data abstracted from clinical and laboratory databases identified physician-diagnosed sepsis cases in neonates admitted to the general paediatric wards at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital from January 2015 to September 2016. Neonates with physician-diagn

Clinical usefulness and accuracy of polymerase chain reaction in the detection of bacterial meningitis agents in pediatric cerebrospinal fluid.

Bacterial meningitis poses enormous healthcare challenges due to a high mortality, morbidity and sequelae. Neisseria (N.) meningitidis, Haemophilus (H.) influenzae, Streptococcus (S.) pneumoniae and S. agalactiae remain among the most prevalent infectious agents that cause bacterial meningitis in children. The objective of this study was the simultaneous detection of these pathogens in suspected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR) and compare PCR results with standard diagnostics currently used in clinical practice. CSF specimens were obtained from 515

The dynamic Alp landscape of Streptococcus dysgalactiae.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus dysgalactiae is an important pathogen in both humans and animals. Alpha-like proteins (Alps) are surface-anchored adhesins and contribute to host tissue invasion. While Alps are nearly ubiquitous in Streptococcus agalactiae and are recognized as major virulence factors in Streptococcus pyogenes, their presence and diversity in S. dysgalactiae remain poorly characterized. METHODS: We screened 1,243 S. dysgalactiae genomes of human and animal origin from Norway, Japan, Canada, and Australia for presence of alp genes. A subset of 32 strains from Norway was further seque…

A Review of the Impact of Streptococcal Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance on Human Health.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS), and Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) are bacteria that can cause a range of infections, some of them life-threatening. This review examines the spread of antibiotic resistance and its mechanisms against antibiotics for streptococcal infections. Data on high-level penicillin-resistant invasive pneumococci have been found in Brazil (42.8%) and Japan (77%). The resistance is caused by mutations in genes that encode penicillin-binding proteins. Similarly, GAS and GBS strains reported from Asia, the USA, and Africa have undergone similar transfo…

Streptococcus salivarius K12 Limits Group B Streptococcus Vaginal Colonization.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) colonizes the rectovaginal tract in 20% to 30% of women and during pregnancy can be transmitted to the newborn, causing severe invasive disease. Current routine screening and antibiotic prophylaxis have fallen short of complete prevention of GBS transmission, and GBS remains a leading cause of neonatal infection. We have investigated the ability of Streptococcus salivarius, a predominant member of the native human oral microbiota, to control GBS colonization.
