A rare case of concurrent mitral and aortic valve aneurysms in the setting of infective endocarditis.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Mitral valve aneurysm is a rare imaging finding most caused by infective endocarditis. The concurrent presence of an aortic valve aneurysm is unique and foretells a severe presentation that would require valve replacement during the same admission. ABSTRACT: A 42-year-old male patient presented with intermittent fever, night sweats, and weight loss for 2 months. TEE showed a rare finding of concurrent mitral and aortic valve aneurysms, and blood cultures grew streptococcus mutans. His infective endocarditis was successfully treated with antibiotics and placement of mecha…

Biosynthesized selenium nanoparticles enhance antibiofilm properties of PMMA resin for dental applications.

This study investigates the development of biosynthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and their integration into polymethyl methacrylate … with no significant degradation up to 300 °C. Antimicrobial assays revealed strong activity against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), and Candida albicans (C. albicans) (MICs: 100-200 μg/mL), effectively inhibiting and dispersing biofilms. PMMA discs (10 mm diameter × 2 mm thickness) containing SeNPs achieved significant reducti …

A genome-wide in vivo screen reveals fitness pathways required for streptococcal infective endocarditis.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening disease most often caused by blood-borne bacteria that infect previously damaged cardiac t … of potential targets for novel antimicrobial intervention. A subset of these genes was examined in Streptococcus mutans; all were found to be essential for IE fitness in this distantly related oral species as well, suggesting broad conservation. Using experimental evolution, we further show that disruption of key fitness pathways triggers reproducible compensatory "b …

The formation of cariogenic plaque to contemporary adhesive restorative materials: an in vitro study.

The research exploiting the ability of dental materials to induce or prevent secondary caries (SC) development still seems inconclusive. Con … rs (Fuji II LC, Caredyne Restore), respectively, were incubated in bacterial suspension composed of Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus salivarius at pH 7.0 and 5.5. Coverslips were used as a control. Adhered bacteria were collected after 2, 4, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h and analyzed using quantitat …

Antibacterial Effects of Er:YAG Laser Irradiation on Candida-Streptococcal Biofilms.

In contemporary dentistry, laser-based interventions have become one of the mainstays of care for patients with oral biofilm diseases, such as candidiasis, periodontal disease and peri-implantitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser (LightWalker, Ljubljana, Fotona, Slovenia) irradiation at varying irradiance levels (T1: 11.3 W/cm2 and T2: 120.54 W/cm2) on microbial viability in single- and dual-species biofilm models, focusing on Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Streptococcus mutans, to address challenges in managing complex oral biofilms in clini…

Antibacterial efficacy of exogenous nitric oxide on periodontal pathogens.

Current treatments for periodontitis (e.g., scaling/root planing and chlorhexidine) have limited efficacy since they fail to suppress microb … thogenic Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis viability. In contrast, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sanguinis, caries-associated organisms, were substantially less sensitive to NO treatment. An in vitro investigation of the antimicrobial activity of an herbal mouthrinse.

The purpose of this study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of one prescription and two commercially available over-the-counter mouthrinses and positive and negative controls against bacteria commonly found in the oral cavity. The bacteria used in this study were Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis and Actinomyces viscosus. Sterile discs which were treated with the mouthrinses were placed on agar plates along with the controls. Zones of microbial inhibition were measured in millimeters after 48 hours. The results indicated that all of the mouthrinses demonstrated antimicrobia…

Association of salivary bacterial aggregating activity with sulfomucin.

The requirements of human salivary mucins for aggregating potential towards the common cariogenic oral bacteria, S. mutans and S. sanguis, were investigated. Agglutination inhibition assays demonstrated that the aggregating capacity towards bacteria resides in the acidic mucin fraction. The inhibitory activity of the acidic mucin decreased only 2-4-fold following removal of sialic acid, whereas the desulfation caused a complete loss of the inhibitory potential against both bacteria. Furthermore, the aggregating capacity of mucin-derived sulfated oligosaccharide was found to be 16-fold higher t

Evaluation of Oral Microflora-Related to Dental Caries and Salivary pH in type II Diabetic Patients.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is one of the chronic diseases and a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a high blood sugar level ov … nts. CONCLUSION: From the present study, we conclude that there is a slight increase in the CFU of Streptococcus mutans in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic patients. This CFU increase and decrease in salivary PH were strongly associated with increased dental caries in diabetic patients.

Antimicrobial susceptibility of viridans group streptococci in Taiwan with an emphasis on the high rates of resistance to penicillin and macrolides in Streptococcus oralis.

Macrolide resistance also occurred most frequently in S. oralis isolates (55%) but in none of Streptococcus mutans. Penicillin and macrolides tended to be less active against isolates recovered from non-invasive sites than against those isolated from invasive sites. Nanomaterial-based synergistic strategies for combating dental caries: progress and perspectives.

Dental caries, as the predominant global oral disease, remains a critical public health issue worldwide, particularly in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. However, common caries prevention approaches (e.g., oral health education, mechanical plaque removal, and delivery of fluoride agents) are still insufficient for optimal caries management, and therefore, alternative regimens that can supplement existing strategies are highly warranted. Nanomaterials exhibit considerable potential in combating cariogenic pathogens and biofilms owing to their promising antimicrobial capacity, improv

Chapter 11: Future Perspectives in the Study of Dental Caries.

Dental caries is a disease that affects people of all ages since demineralization and remineralization of tooth surfaces occur in everyone's mouths, and caries lesions develop when there is an imbalance between demineralization and remineralization. In this way, teeth are exposed to a risk of caries. Prevention strategies aiming at "zero caries" and treatments aiming at "tooth recovery and regeneration" are the two main areas of caries research, and both basic and clinical research are required in these fields. The following future perspectives of caries research were identified: The disease c
