Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) of the eyelid: Clinicopathologic features, immunohistochemical findings and review of literature.

Sweat gland neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that pose a diagnostic challenge for both, ophthalmologists and pathologists. Endocrine, mucin producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), considered to be analogous to the solid papillary mammary carcinoma is one such tumor. It usually affects elderly, is more frequent in women and has a predilection for skin of the eyelid. Although it has an indolent clinical course, EMPSGC is believed to be a precursor of the invasive mucinous carcinoma and has a potential for local recurrence. We report a series of 10 biopsy-proven EMPSGCs with their immunohistoc…

Drug screening using the sweat of a fingerprint: lateral flow detection of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, cocaine, opiates and amphetamine.

Here, we describe the use of a fluorescence based lateral flow competition assay for the screening of four classes of drugs, viz, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cocaine (through the detection of benzoylecgonine, BZE), opiates (through the detection of morphine, MOR) and amphetamine (AMP) present in the sweat of a fingerprint. The Drug Screening Cartridge was specifically developed for fingerprint sample collection and analysis. For this study, the cut-offs were set at: 190, 90, 68 and 80 pg/fingerprint for THC, BZE, MOR and AMP, respectively. Working with three UK coroners, the Drug Screening …

A 5-month-old boy with recurrent respiratory infections, failure to thrive, and borderline elevated sweat chloride levels.

Both severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and cystic fibrosis (CF) may present in infancy with a history of respiratory infections and failure to thrive. Elevated sweat chloride levels on multiple sweat tests is diagnostic of CF; transient elevation of sweat chloride has been reported in patients with hypogammaglobulinemia and antibody deficiency without CF. This article presents a case report of a 5-month-old boy with recurrent respiratory infections, failure to thrive, and two borderline elevated sweat test levels. Laboratory evaluation including testing for CF as well as immune deficienc…

The simultaneous measurement of epithelial ion transport and intracellular free Ca2+ in cultured equine sweat gland secretory epithelium.

We explored the relationship between nucleotide-evoked changes in intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and anion secretion by measuring [Ca2+]i and I(SC) simultaneously in Fura-2-loaded, cultured equine sweat gland epithelia. Apical ATP, UTP or UDP elicited sustained increases in [Ca2+]i that were initiated by the mobilization of cytoplasmic Ca2+ but maintained by Ca2+ influx. However, although these nucleotides also increased I(SC), this response was transient whereas the [Ca2+]i signals were sustained. Experiments in which external Ca2+ was removed/replaced showed that Ca2+ entering nucleoti…

Lung disease in crisponi/cold-induced sweating syndrome type 1: expanding the clinical phenotype spectrum.

UNLABELLED: Crisponi/Cold-Induced Sweating Syndrome Type 1 (CS/CISS1) is an ultra-rare genetic disorder caused by biallelic variants in the cytokine receptor-like factor-1 (CRLF1) gene and is associated with several comorbidities. Comprehensive data on the respiratory phenotype of this condition are lacking despite being associated with high mortality in infancy, often due to severe respiratory complications like aspiration pneumonia and sudden death related to hyperthermic crises. Our study investigates respiratory complications and lung ultrasound characteristics, enhancing the comprehension…

Reflex vasodilation and sweating in response to passive whole body heating are blunted in women with major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with alterations in the mechanistic regulation of body temperature, including altered circadian temperature profiles, reduced sweating, and blunted cutaneous vasodilation. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) may affect vascular function and sweating; however, heat stress thermoregulation in MDD and during SSRI or SNRI therapy has not been measured. The purpose of this study was to measure reflex cutaneous vasodilation and sweating responses during passive heating in women with MDD…

Increasing humidity progressively reduces sweating efficiency similarly in males and females during exercise-heat stress.

This study compared the impact of increasing relative humidity (RH) on sweating efficiency (SE) in males and females exercising in the heat. Twenty recreationally active adults (10 females) completed four experimental trials (15, 35, 55, or 75% RH) in an environmental chamber (35°C) dressed in a T-shirt and shorts (and sports bra for females). Each study visit involved cycling for 60 min at a moderate intensity (Hprod = 220 W·m-2) over a pan of mineral oil, situated above a high precision scale. Evaporated sweat loss (ESL; g) was measured as the change in mass of the combined subject + ergomet…

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of eyelid as a presenting feature of breast carcinoma in a male patient.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare indolent tumor with predilection for periocular skin of elderly women. Although recurrences may occur, metastases are uncommon with EMPSGC. We present a case of EMPSGC of the eyelid as a presenting feature of invasive carcinoma of the breast in a male patient. A 71-year-old male presented with a right eyelid mass from the past 6 months. A wide excision biopsy with intraoperative frozen section margin control and reconstruction was done. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were suggestive of EMPSGC. On systemic examina…

Optimization of a disposable pipette tips extraction for the analysis of psychoactive substances in sweat specimens using design of experiments.

Novel psychoactive substances continue to emerge in the marketplace and are often found as substances in traditional illicit drug materials and users are often unaware of the presence of other drugs. The proper identification and confirmation of the exposure to a drug is made possible when a biological specimen is collected and tested. Sweat is an alternative biological matrix of great interest for clinical and forensic analysis. One of the reasons is attributed to its expanded drug detection window, enabling a greater monitoring capacity, and provision of information on prospective drug use. …

The Detection of Vancomycin in Sweat: A Next-Generation Digital Surrogate Marker for Antibiotic Tissue Penetration: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Assuring adequate antibiotic tissue concentrations at the point of infection, especially in skin and soft tissue infections, is pivotal for an effective treatment and cure. Despite the global issue, a reliable AB monitoring test is missing. Inadequate antibiotic treatment leads to the development of antimicrobial resistances and toxic side effects. β-lactam antibiotics were already detected in sweat of patients treated with the respective antibiotics intravenously before. With the emergence of smartphone-based biosensors to analyse sweat on the spot of need, next-generation molecul…

Method for Human Eccrine Sweat Gland Isolation from the Scalp by Means of the Micropunch Technique and Vital Dyes.

The isolation of eccrine sweat glands from human skin has always been a difficult task. The human scalp contains thousands of eccrine glands. Recently, the close anatomic relationship of the eccrine gland with the scalp hair follicle has been described. Taking advantage of this anatomic relationship as well as of the availability of follicular units (FUs) obtained in hair transplant procedures, we describe here a simple and efficient method to isolate eccrine sweat glands from the human scalp. This method is identical to the micropunch hair graft harvesting method known as follicular unit exci…
