A B lymphoblastoid cell line can provide a comitogenic, accessory signal for mitogen-treated T cells. In a study evaluating the antigenic determinant of such cells that mediate this effect, a monoclonal antibody (I57) was raised against the Daudi cell line. Fresh bone marrow mononuclear leukocytes were used as a target for infection by human T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus subgroup 1 (HTLV-1) by co-cultivation with virus-positive cell lines. The lines were established from T-cell leukemia-lymphoma patients or HTLV-1-transformed human umbilical cord-blood T cells. There is a significant decrease in the ratio of inducer (helper) to suppressor T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). These changes are not seen in other forms of cholestatic liver disease, but are similar to those described in chronic graft-versus-host disease. Cyclosporin A treatment increased the proportion of suppressor A lymphocytes and improved liver function in 6 patients with PBC. This indicates that cyclosporin A is an immunoregulatory drug. Unfortunately nephrotoxicity precluded long-term use.

We have investigated the relative distribution and some in vitro functions of thyroid-infiltrating immunocompetent cells obtained at fine-needle aspiration biopsy in twelve patients with Graves' disease and thirteen patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
