Contrasting effects of d-amphetamine and atomoxetine on measures of impulsive action and choice.

Amphetamine (AMP) and atomoxetine (ATX) represent two of the most widely studied drug treatments used in the investigation of impulsive behaviour. While both drugs have relatively well defined effects in tests designed to investigate impulsive action (e.g. 5-choice task; 5-CSRTT), the effects of both drugs in tests of impulsive choice (e.g. delay discounting) are less consistent. In the present study both AMP and ATX were tested in a rodent gambling task (rGT) and delay discounting in rats separately trained to either an ascending or descending delay schedule. Effects of both drugs were compar

Connectomic signatures of working memory deficits in depression, mania, and euthymic states of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Working memory (WM) deficit is a feature persistently reported across mania, depression, and euthymic periods of bipolar disorder (BD). WM capacity relates to distributed brain regions that are systemically organized at the connectome level. It is not clear whether the same disruption of this network-level organization underlies the WM impairment seen in different phases of BD. METHODS: We used graph theory to examine the topology of the functional connectome in different granularity in 143 subjects (72 with BD [32 depression; 15 mania; 25 euthymic] and 71 healthy controls) during

Electroencephalography Functional Networks Reveal Global Effects of Methylphenidate in Youth with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Methylphenidate (MPH) is the leading drug for treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet its underlying neuronal mechanisms are still unclear. Here, we use a dynamical brain networks approach to explore the effects of cognitive effort and MPH on ADHD subjects. Electroencephalography data were recorded from 19 ADHD subjects and 18 controls during a Go/No-Go Task. ADHD subjects completed the task twice a day over 2 days. The second session was administered post-ingestion of placebo/MPH (alternately). Controls performed two tasks in 1 day. The data were divided into 300 ms

Far Space Remapping by Tool Use: A rTMS Study Over the Right Posterior Parietal Cortex.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, rTMS has been successfully employed to interfere with the right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC) inducing neglect-like behavior in healthy subjects. Several studies have shown that the use of tools can modulate the boundaries between near and far space: indeed when far space is reached by the stick, far space can be remapped as near. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether once that rTMS on the rPPC has selectively induced neglect-like bias in the near space (but not in the far space), neglect can appears also in the far space when t

Dynamics of attention during the initiation of smooth pursuit eye movements.

Many studies indicate that saccades are necessarily preceded by a shift of attention to the target location. There is no direct evidence for the same coupling during smooth pursuit. If smooth pursuit and attention were coupled, pursuit onset should be delayed whenever attention is focused on a stationary, non-target location. To test this hypothesis, observers were instructed to shift their attention to a peripheral location according to a location cue (Experiments 1 and 2) or a symbolic cue (Experiment 3) around the time of smooth pursuit initiation. Attending to static targets had only negli

Occupational-circadian disruption and physical inactivity conjointly amplify fatty liver risk: based on liver ultrasound transient elastography.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the conjointly negative effects of floating shift work and physical inactivity on fatty liver disease (FLD) using ultrasound- based hepatic steatosis assessment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations between work shifts, physical activity (PA), and FLD. Stratified and subgroup analyses were conducted to assess effect modification. Linear and quadratic regression models explored threshold effects of metabolic equivalent task (MET) levels on the degree of hepatic steatosis across shift types

Involvement of the reticulospinal system in the control of locomotion.

Human stepping movements are known to be co-ordinated by a neural coupling of upper and lower limbs. The aim of this study was to evaluate a potential involvement of the reticulospinal system in the interlimb co-ordination by neural coupling during locomotion. During stepping electrical stimuli (ES) were applied to the right tibial nerve to assess the mechanisms underlying neural coupling of lower limbs, and loud acoustic stimuli (LAS) were released, known to activate the reticulospinal system. EMG activity of the tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius medialis (GM) of both sides was recorde

The use of virtual reality to reduce stress among night-shift anesthesiologists: study protocol for a crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Because of the lack of anesthesia workforce, anesthesiologists are forced to work overtime and more night shifts, which can disturb their biological rhythm and cause severe stress and depression, potentially leading to negative and even devastating outcomes for both themselves and patients. Virtual reality (VR), a new method to reduce stress and pain for patients, has been widely used in biomedical fields. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential effectiveness of VR technology in reducing stress among night-shift anesthesiologists. METHODS: In this randomized control

Cigarette smoking status in pathological gamblers: association with impulsivity and cognitive flexibility.

BACKGROUND: While the majority of pathological gamblers are current cigarette smokers (CS), some have quit smoking (former smokers, FS) while others never smoked (never smokers, NS). The reasons for elevated smoking rates in pathological gambling are not known, but gamblers may use nicotine as a putative cognitive enhancer. This study evaluated impulsivity and cognitive flexibility in a sample of pathological gamblers with differing smoking status. METHODS: Fifty-five subjects with pathological gambling (CS, n=34; FS, n=10; NS, n=11) underwent cognitive assessments using the Stop-Signal (SST)

The acute effect of night work-related circadian misalignment on headache episodes: Results from the 1001 nights-cohort.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of headaches on days with night shifts compared with days with day shifts within the same individuals, accounting for work-related psychosocial stressors, physical job demands, and sleep duration and quality. This approach allowed us to isolate the impact of circadian misalignment due to night work from other potential headache triggers. BACKGROUND: Night work has been suggested to increase the risk of headaches, primarily due to circadian misalignment and disturbed sleep. Most previous studies compare night workers with day workers, but diff

Industrial hygiene aspects of a sampling survey at a bleached-kraft pulp mill in British Columbia.

To validate exposure estimates used to investigate correlations between exposure and cancer risk, 1678 personal measurements were collected for 46 job titles during 73 day shifts at a bleached-kraft pulp mill. Measurements included shift-long average and short-term exposures to carbon monoxide, chlorine dioxide (ClO2), and hydrogen sulfide; and shift-long average exposures to calcium oxide and wood dust (WD). Overall results indicate low levels of exposure with a few noteworthy exceptions. Although ClO2 was the exclusive bleaching agent, 77 area samples indicated that chlorine (Cl2), not ClO2

Contralesional recruitment and localization of EEG signal complexity in stroke: a recurrence quantification analysis of hierarchical motor tasks.

Objective.Effective characterization of neural complexity during motor execution tasks enhances understanding of maladaptive cortical reorganization in stroke and inform targeted rehabilitation. While traditional EEG analyses often do not consider nonlinear temporal dynamics, we introduce a recurrence based computational framework to quantify cortical complexity during hierarchical motor tasks. Here, we evaluate contralesional motor system engagement in stroke survivors using recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), ensuring sensitivity to nonlinear and temporally structured cortical activity

Muscle amnesia: a hypothesized framework for motor-pattern accessibility in exercise rehabilitation after inactivity, injury and illness.

After inactivity, injury or illness, people may regain part of their strength, range of motion or load tolerance before they recover fluent movement. Clinicians may observe an athlete, patient or older adult who can generate force but returns to walking, squatting, standing, running or sport with a guarded, variable or inefficient movement strategy that appears disproportionate to remaining impairment. This Perspective presents a theoretical framework and proposes the term Muscle Amnesia as a cautious practical label for a history-, use- and context-sensitive reduction in access to a previousl

Neural investigations of a digital-game based intervention for young Learners with mathematical developmental variability.

Developmental dyscalculia (DD), a significant mathematics learning difficulty, remains under-researched in terms of its neural mechanisms and effective interventions. Few studies have examined neural changes after math interventions in young children. This study investigated these changes in thirty-two dyscalculia-at-risk (DR) and non-dyscalculia-at-risk (NDR) children following a digital game-based intervention, focusing on brain activation and network changes using graph theory metrics. NDR children were randomized into intervention and control groups. Results indicated increased activation

Eccentric Fatigue Modulates Stretch-shortening Cycle Effectiveness--A Possible Role in Lower Limb Overuse Injuries.

The role of fatigue in injury development is an important consideration for clinicians. In particular, the role of eccentric fatigue in stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) activities may be linked to lower limb overuse conditions. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of ankle plantarflexor eccentric fatigue on SSC effectiveness during a hopping task in healthy volunteers. 11 healthy volunteers (23.2±6.7 years) performed a sub-maximal hopping task on a custom-built sledge system. 3D motion capture and surface EMG were utilised to measure lower limb stiffness, temporal kinematic mea

Impact of Simulation Based Learning on Knowledge and Skills Among Medical Students Undergoing Competency Based Medical Education.

Introduction Medical education is shifting toward experiential, competency-based approaches that emphasize clinical reasoning and practical skills. Simulation-based learning (SBL) supports this shift by offering a safe, structured setting where students enhance cognitive and psychomotor abilities through active practice, timely feedback, and reflection. This fosters deeper engagement with clinical content and builds confidence before patient encounters. Global research indicates that SBL enhances various competencies, but Indian studies are limited. Factors like insufficient early clinical exp

Multimodal neuroimaging of fatigability development.

Fatigability refers to the inability of the neuromuscular system to generate enough force to produce movements to meet task challenges. Fatigability has a central and a peripheral component linked via the neuromuscular system, but how these two components interact as fatigue develops lacks a complete understanding. The effects of fatigability are experienced in healthy humans but also accompany various disorders, often exacerbating their symptoms. We studied how fatigability develops in the neuromuscular system using multimodal neuroimaging. We recruited healthy participants to perform a fatig

Restoring the Right Stream: Training-Free OOD Robustness for Vision-Language-Action Policies.

Vision-Language-Action (VLA) policies remain brittle under modest distribution shift. On LIBERO-Plus, contemporary models that solve clean tasks at high rates can fall below 30% success when the camera's viewpoint or the robot's initial pose is perturbed. Most training-free test-time remedies address this problem through the image stream, for example, by augmenting, purifying, or selecting visual observations. In our controlled evaluation, this family of methods improves mean success by only about three points and leaves the robot-initial-state failure largely unresolved. This paper studies th
