Tears of the patellar and quadriceps tendon are common in the active population, especially in athletes. At present, several techniques for surgical repair and reconstruction are available. When reruptures occur, a reconstruction is mandatory. In the present paper, we describe a surgical technique for patellar and quadriceps tendon reconstruction using ipsilateral hamstring autograft. After routine hamstring tendon harvesting, the tendon ends are prepared using a whip stitch. A transverse tunnel is drilled in the midportion of the patella, the hamstring graft is passed through the patella, and

Tendon injuries in humans often lead to significant functional impairments, necessitating effective regeneration methods. While mammalian tendon healing typically results in scar formation and functional loss, certain species such as axolotls exhibit remarkable regenerative abilities. This study investigates axolotl tendon regeneration following complete transection (tenotomy) and volumetric loss (tenectomy). Axolotl tendons, identified through histological and gene expression analyses, consist of collagens and exhibit specific tendon markers. Our results indicated complete regeneration of tra…

The biceps brachii is a unique muscle with 2 proximal tendons and a single distal tendon. Although these tendons are part of the same muscle, they have significantly different functions. It is hypothesized that the long head of the biceps acts as a pain generator in the shoulder, though the biomechanical function is still under debate. Conversely, the distal biceps tendon is the major supinator of the forearm and serves a secondary flexor. As such, injuries to these tendons must be evaluated independently. Biceps brachii ruptures most often occur in middle-aged men following a traumatic event.

Tendon transfers are used to restore balance and function to a paralyzed, injured, or absent neuromuscular-motor unit. In general, tendon transfer is indicated for restoration of muscle function after peripheral nerve injury, injury to the brachial plexus or spinal cord, or irreparable injury to tendon or muscle. The goal is to improve the balance of a neurologically impaired hand. In the upper extremity, tendon transfers are most commonly used to restore function following injury to the radial, median, and ulnar nerves. An understanding of the general principles of tendon transfer is importan

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a widely used autologous treatment for tendon injuries in clinics. Platelets (PLTs) are a major source of high mobility group box1 (HMGB1) that is gaining attention as a chemoattractant that can recruit stem cells to the wound area to enhance healing of injured tissues; however, the contribution of PLT HMGB1 in wounded tendon healing remains unexplored. This study investigated the effect of PLT HMGB1 within PRP on tendon healing using PLT HMGB1 knockout (KO) and GFP mice. A window defect was created in the patellar tendons of both groups of mice, and wounds were t…

This study aimed to assess the outcome of supinator to posterior interosseus nerve transfer, followed by tendon transfer, to restore grasp function in patients with mid-to-high-level cervical spine injuries. Fifteen upper limbs in 11 patients with these injuries were included. The outcomes were then compared with a historical control group consisting of 16 upper limbs that received tendon transfers alone. The outcome was assessed using the Canadian occupational performance measure, ability to open the first web space, and grip and pinch strength 12 months after surgery. The Canadian occupation

The majority of injuries during sport are to the lower extremity (more than 50%), most of which occur in children and young adults younger than 25 years and involve fractures, ligament injuries, or tendon injuries. This article discusses the etiology of some of the most common foot and ankle sports-related injuries. The authors focus on clinical findings, associated injuries, pathophysiology, and current trends. Many of these factors are discussed in detail elsewhere in this issue.

INTRODUCTION: Flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon injuries are common, particularly in open injuries caused by sharp objects. However, data regarding FHL tendon retraction following hallux-level FHL tendon lacerations remain limited. This study investigated the retraction and shortening of the FHL tendon using cadaveric models.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six fresh-frozen below-knee amputated cadaveric feet (mean age: 65 years, range: 62-88) were utilized. FHL tendons were dissected, and lacerations were simulated at the hallux level. Tendons were subjected to various tensile forces (20-120 N) usi…

Tendon injuries pose a significant challenge in equine medicine due to the inherently limited regenerative capacity of tendon tissue and the high likelihood of reinjury. Recently, injectable platelet-rich fibrin (I-PRF) and exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have shown promise as regenerative treatments, offering potential benefits in matrix restoration and modulation of inflammatory responses. This study investigated the effects of I-PRF alone and in combination with MSC-derived exosomes on collagenase-induced superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendonitis in donkeys. Twenty-sev…

Tendon injuries are prone to adhesions after repair, which in turn lead to limb dysfunction, which remains a major challenge in clinical treatment. Current research suggests that tendon injuries are affected by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), inflammatory responses, and type III collagen deposition. These factors lead to an imbalance between extrinsic and intrinsic tendon healing and are the main reasons for the occurrence of peritendinous adhesions. In this study, we constructed a carrier using a polyvinyl alcohol/polyethylene glycol (PVA/PEG) dual network hydrogel and load…

The use of the arterialized venous flap with a palmaris longus tendon transfer has previously been reported. Further trials of this technique were conducted in four patients to reconstruct complicated finger injuries involving loss of skin and extensor tendon. In contrast to the results of previous cases, those of recent cases are more encouraging. This technique may be the procedure of choice in patients with digital skin defects, where there are associated extensor tendon defects with exposed bone.

Avulsion of the extensor tendon of the terminal phalanx of the finger is the most frequent form of all subcutaneous tendon ruptures. The rupture may occur in the tendinous part or cause a fracture of the bone in the region of the insertion. Healing requires at least 5-6 weeks conservative therapy with a Stack's splint being attempted first. Surgical fixation of the terminal joint with Kirschner wire should only be carried out in exceptional cases because of the risk of infection and damage to the joint. Operative union of the ends of the tendon is only immediately indicated with open tendon se

Injuries and damage to tendons plague both human and equine athletes. At the site of injuries, various cells congregate to repair and re-structure the collagen. Treatments for collagen injury range from simple procedures such as icing and pharmaceutical treatments to more complex surgeries and the implantation of stem cells. Regardless of the treatment, the level of mechanical stimulation incurred by the recovering tendon is crucial. However, for a given tendon injury, it is not known precisely how much of a load should be applied for an effective recovery. Both too much and too little loading
