Ticks from a Morelet's crocodile in Belize.

Parasitism of crocodilians by ticks has rarely been reported, and to our knowledge only seven published accounts exist. On 3 July 1999, we collected four ticks from a subadult Morelet's crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) captured in northern Belize. These were identified as Amblyomma dissimile (one female), and Amblyomma sp. (two nymphs, one larva). The crocodile was captured on land approximately 100 m from water, and all four ticks were attached to loose skin on the lateral surface of the tail. Crocodilians are most susceptible to terrestrial ectoparasites, including ticks, during overland mov

Introduction of potential heartwater vectors and other exotic ticks into Florida on imported reptiles.

Following the discovery of establishment of the African tortoise tick Amblyomma marmoreum in Florida, the present study was undertaken to determine the extent of introduction of exotic ticks into Florida on imported reptiles. Exotic ticks were identified on 29 (91%) of 32 reptile premises in 18 counties of Florida. The ticks, found on a variety of imported tortoises, snakes, and monitor lizards, belonged to 4 Amblyomma species (A. marmoreum, Amblyomma nuttalli, Amblyomma sabanerae, and Amblyomma sparsum) and 4 Aponomma species (Aponomma exornatum, Aponomma flavomaculatum, Aponomma latum, and A

Ticks and tick-borne bovine piroplasmosis in the Southmountain pasture of Hunan Province, China.

Ticks and tick-borne bovine piroplasmosis is one of the most serious diseases affecting cattle bred in the Southmountain pasture of Hunan province. An investigation carried out from 1992 to 1995 showed that Theileria sergenti was found in the blood of disease-stricken cows. Ticks were collected from cattle. The species concerned (three genera and four species of ticks: Haemaphysalis vietnamensis, Haemaphysalis longicornis, Ixodes sinensis and Boophilus microplus) were identified by microscopy and their numbers recorded every month. Because H. longicornis is a three-host tick, with the larvae,

Pheromone/acaricide mixtures in the control of the tick Amblyomma hebraeum: effects of acaricides on attraction and attachment.

Unfed adults and nymphs of the bont tick Amblyomma hebraeum Koch are attracted to hosts on which fed males, emitting an aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAP), are attached. Pheromone/acaricide mixtures have the potential to selectively attract and kill these ticks. We have investigated the effects of three acaricides, amitraz (an amidine), flumethrin (a synthetic pyrethroid) and chlorfenvinphos (an organophosphate), combined with AAP, on the attraction and attachment of the unfed adults. Attraction, measured in field assays involving AAP and CO2, was not inhibited by any of the acaricides. At

Lyme disease in California: interrelationship of Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae), the western fence lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis), and Borrelia burgdorferi.

The relationship of immature western black-legged ticks, Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls, to the western fence lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis Baird and Girard, and to the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, was investigated in chaparral and woodland-grass habitats in northern California from 1984 to 1986. Immature ticks were found on lizards in spring and summer, but the prevalence and abundance of ticks on this host were considerably greater in spring. The peak of larval abundance preceded that of nymphs by several weeks, but there was considerable seasonal overlap between these

[The spirochetal etiology of erythema chronicum migrans and Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth meningo-polyneuritis].

Erythema chronicum migrans and tick-born meningo-polyneuritis Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth are caused by a spirochete transmitted by Ixodes ricinus. The same is true of Lyme disease, the erythema chronicum migrans infection of North America transmitted by ticks of the same genus. In Europe demonstration of IgG and IgM antibodies against Borrelia duttoni during the course of infection and by immunofluorescence staining of spirochetes in ticks at sites of infection indicate this etiology. In the USA a spirochete could be isolated from ticks and from blood, skin and cerebrospinal fluid of patients wi

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on birds migrating to the island of Ponza, Italy, and the tick-borne pathogens they carry.

Seasonal migration of birds between breeding and wintering areas can facilitate the spread of tick species and tick-borne diseases. In this study, 151 birds representing 10 different bird species were captured on Ponza Island, an important migratory stopover off the western coast of Italy and screened for tick infestation. Ticks were collected and identified morphologically. Morphological identification was supported through sequencing a fragment of the 16S mitochondrial gene. In total, 16 captured birds carried ticks from four tick species: Hyalomma rufipes (n = 14), Amblyomma variegatum (n =

Factors influencing the selection of Rhipicephalus microplus resistance to acaricides.

Rhipicephalus microplus is a hematophagous ecto-parasite of cattle that has a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This tick species causes economic losses by consuming blood and reducing meat and milk production, as well as facilitating the transmission of pathogens. Different classes of acaricides, including organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids, insect growth regulators, formamidines, phenylpyrazoles, and macrocyclic lactones, are currently used sequentially or simultaneously to control R. microplus infestations. The frequent use of these acaricides

Records for ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on free-ranging Coendou spinosus from State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases have spread since the mid-twentieth century largely due to major anthropogenic changes impacting natural ecosystems. The Coendou spinosus is a medium sized rodent found in the southeast of Brazil. There is little information about the presence and richness of ticks on porcupines. The objective of this study was to identified ticks collected from C. spinosus received at a triage center of wildlife in the city of São Paulo, from 1996 to 2025 (almost 30 years). Ticks from a total of 100 free-ranging porcupines were collected. A total of 223 ticks in various life stag

Molecular detection of Coxiella burnetii in ticks from livestock in Kashmir: first evidence and molecular insights.

BACKGROUND: Coxiella burnetii is a globally distributed zoonotic pathogen, but its presence in ticks from Kashmir has not been previously documented. METHODS: This study investigated the prevalence, seasonal trends, and phylogenetic characteristics of C. burnetii in ticks collected from domesticated ruminants across eight districts of Kashmir. A total of 1800 ticks were harvested from 4965 cattle, sheep, and goats. Ticks were identified morphologically and subjected to PCR targeting the IS1111 insertion sequence. Positive amplicons were sequenced and analysed phylogenetically. RESULTS: The t

Coxiellaceae in Ticks from Human, Domestic and Wild Hosts from Sardinia, Italy: High Diversity of Coxiella-like Endosymbionts.

PURPOSE: Coxiella burnetii is known for its potential as veterinary and human bacterial pathogen. The bacteria have been described in ticks, but their role in transmission of Q fever in humans is considered low. Coxiella endosymbionts closely related to C. burnetii have been also isolated from an extensive range of tick species and evidence is growing that these endosymbionts could be linked to human bacteremia. The aim of this study was to get new information on the presence of Coxiella species in ticks infesting wild and domestic hosts in Sardinia, Italy. METHODS: Here, 138 ticks collected

Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus: Seasonal and Annual Variation of Epidemiological Parameters Related to Nymph-to-Larva Transmission and Exposure of Small Mammals.

A greater knowledge of the ecology of the natural foci of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is essential to better assess the temporal variations of the risk of tick-borne encephalitis for humans. To describe the seasonal and inter-annual variations of the TBEV-cycle and the epidemiological parameters related to TBEV nymph-to-larva transmission, exposure of small mammals to TBEV, and tick aggregation on small mammals, a longitudinal survey in ticks and small mammals was conducted over a 3-year period in a mountain forest in Alsace, eastern France. TBEV prevalence in questing nymphs was lowe

[Confirmation of Tick-borne encephalitis virus in an European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)].

European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) have a high exposure to various ticks, which could transmit pathogens with direct health significance for the host and may have zoonotic potential. Tick-borne meningoencephalitis (FSME) is an important tick-borne disease in Switzerland, caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus. About its occurrence in the European hedgehog population is little known. The present study examined various organs, blood and ticks of 65 European hedgehogs to obtain data of FSME virus presence in this species in Switzerland. Real-time RT-PCR from the lungs, liver, spleen an

Identification of Leishmania spp. promastigotes in the intestines, ovaries, and salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus actively infesting dogs.

Sand flies are recognized as the major vector of canine visceral leishmaniasis. However, in some areas of Brazil where sand flies do not occur, this disease is found in humans and dogs. There has been speculation that ticks might play a role in transmission of canine visceral leishmaniasis and the DNA of Leishmania spp. has been reported in whole ticks. We investigated the presence of Leishmania spp. promastigotes in the intestines, ovaries, and salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks collected from tick-infested dogs in two cities of Brazil. We used 66 dogs that tested positive and

Semi-artificial mouse skin membrane feeding technique for adult tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis.

BACKGROUND: An in vitro artificial feeding technique for hard ticks is quite useful for studying the tick-pathogen interactions. Here, we report a novel semi-artificial feeding technique for the adult parthenogenetic tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, using mouse skin membrane. FINDINGS: Skin with attached adult ticks was removed from the mouse body at 4 to 5 days post-infestation for the construction of the feeding system. This system supplied with rabbit blood was kept in >95% relative humidity at 30°C during the feeding, and ticks were fully engorged (artificially engorged, AE) within 12 to

Identification of potential hosts and vectors of scrub typhus and tick-borne spotted fever group rickettsiae in eastern Taiwan.

Scrub typhus and tick-borne spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses are transmitted by chiggers (larval trombiculid mites) and hard ticks, respectively. We assessed exposure to these disease vectors by extensively sampling both chiggers and ticks and their small mammal hosts in eastern Taiwan during 2007 and 2008. The striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius Pallas (Rodentia: Muridae) was the most common of the small mammals (36.1% of 1393 captures) and presented the highest rate of infestation with both chiggers (47.8% of 110 760) and ticks (78.1% of 1431). Evidence for the utility of the Bm86 antigen from Boophilus microplus in vaccination against other tick species.

The Bm86 antigen, as originally identified in Boophilus microplus, is the basis of commercial tick vaccines against this tick species. The potential for using this antigen or homologues of the antigen in vaccination against other tick species has been assessed. We have conducted vaccine trials in cattle using the B. microplus-derived recombinant Bm86 vaccine (TickGARD) using pairs of vaccinated calves and control calves. These were infested with B. microplus and Boophilus decoloratus larvae simultaneously. For both species, the numbers of engorged female adult ticks, their weight and egg-layin

Experimental transmission of Hepatozoon americanum Vincent-Johnson et al., 1997 to dogs by the Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum Koch.

Experimental transmission of Hepatozoon americanum to dogs was attempted with four ixodid ticks, viz., Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Amblyomma americanum, Amblyomma maculatum and Dermacentor variabilis. Ticks that dogs ingested included some that were laboratory-reared and experimentally fed as nymphs on a dog with naturally occurring hepatozoonosis; other ticks were collected as replete or partially engorged larvae, nymphs and adults from dogs that had hepatozoonosis and natural infestations of ticks. Whole ticks used to expose susceptible dogs orally were partially dissected to help release oocy

Eco-friendly tick control using Pakistani bee propolis: Behavioral and acaricidal effects against Rhipicephalus microplus and Hyalomma marginatum.

Ticks are major veterinary ectoparasites and vectors of infectious diseases. Conventional synthetic acaricides are widely used for tick control; however, their misuse has resulted in resistance, reducing their effectiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the acaricidal potential effects of Pakistani bee propolis against Rhipicephalus microplus and Hyalomma marginatum ticks as an eco-friendly alternative. A contact bioassay was employed in which ticks were exposed to graded concentrations (6.25, 12.50, 25, 50, and 100 mg/mL) of 95% ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP). Tick mortality and behavior

Literature-based spatiotemporal patterns of Hyalomma asiaticum and associated pathogen risks along the Belt and Road Economic Corridors.

Hyalomma asiaticum is a dominant tick vector in arid and semi-arid regions. It transmits multiple pathogens affecting livestock health and production. Long-term spatiotemporal patterns of this tick and associated pathogens remain poorly characterized across the Belt and Road region. We systematically integrated 1970-2025 Chinese and English language literature to construct spatiotemporal distribution and pathogen risk databases for H. asiaticum. Standard deviational ellipse (SDE) analysis, kernel density estimation (KDE), and centroid shift methods were applied to quantify tick expansion and p
