Prolonged speech and modification of stuttering: perceptual, acoustic, and electroglottographic data.

Prolonged speech and its variants are a group of novel speech patterns that form the basis of a popular treatment for stuttering (Ingham, 1984). It is difficult to determine which features of prolonged speech are necessary for the elimination of stuttered speech because the speech pattern produces simultaneous changes in respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory activity. Experimental studies have shown that the modification of phonation and of speech rate contributes to stuttering reduction, and increased duration of speech segments and reduced variability of vowel duration are known to occur

Demographic and clinical correlates of selective information processing in patients with bulimia nervosa.

Demographic and clinical correlates of interference with color-naming words related to eating, weight, and shape were investigated in 75 patients with bulimia nervosa. Interference with color-naming was related to two measures, overall level of psychiatric symptoms and frequency of purging. Multiple regression analysis showed that frequency of purging, and not level of general psychiatric symptoms, was the best predictor of interference. Thus, as would be predicted by cognitive theories, interference appears to be most closely related to features specific to bulimia nervosa rather than to meas

Effect of meditation training on aspects of coronary-prone behavior.

52 undergraduates who had volunteered to receive meditation training were placed into either high or low time-urgency groups based on their scores on Factor S of the Jenkins Activity Survey. Subjects then either received training in Clinically Standardized Meditation followed by 3 1/2-wk. of practice or waited for training during that period. Analyses of scores on a time-estimation task and of self-reported hostility during an enforced waiting task indicated that meditation significantly altered subjects' perceptions of the passage of time and reduced impatience and hostility resulting from en

Loudness adaptation: real or illusory.

There is general agreement that, except at low sensation levels, the loudness of a continuous pure tone does not appear to change with time. By contrast, using a simultaneous dichotic loudness balancing procedure (SDLB) a substantial fall in loudness can be revealed. As a result it has been held that the latter does not represent a loudness loss in real terms but is a manifestation of some form of central binaural interaction possibly involving localization mechanisms. In two studies reported here, one involving a loudness scaling procedure using as a standard a reference tone of 65 dB (HL) an

Temporal order judgments with amnesia.

The hypothesis that patients with anterograde amnesia fail to recognize the temporal relations among recognizable past events was evaluated. Experiment 1 showed that order recognition for words in a list was at chance levels even though event recognition was significantly above chance. The same pattern did not obtain for intact adults. Experiment 2 examined event and order recognition for news events. Amnesics' event recognition for news events was quite accurate and comparable to controls, yet their order recognition was significantly below that of controls, again at chance levels. It is argu

[Time resolution ability in dichotic hearing experiments (author's transl)].

Concerning auditory analysis of speech signals time resolution is one of the most important ability of the hearing system. In psychoacoustic experiments with dichotic represented bursts of noise the detection and time resolution of short changes of interaural time delay and noise coherence are investigated. The results of normal and pathological binaural hearing are discussed and compared to other auditory time analysis experiments.

Time versus causal inferences: Action-outcome learning and prediction differentially shape the experience of causality and simultaneity.

The human brain is capable of recalibrating the perceived timing of events to achieve multisensory temporal grouping. For example, systematic delays separating an action and its subsequent outcome are reduced in perception, promoting the perception of simultaneity and recalibrating people's experience of causality. In this study we investigated whether sensorimotor recalibration depends on the ability to predict the specific outcome an action produces and whether this process differs for simultaneity and causal judgments. Across two experiments, we replicated the classic recalibration effect:

Real-Time 3D Multi-Object Detection and Localization Based on Deep Learning for Road and Railway Smart Mobility.

For smart mobility, autonomous vehicles, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASs), perception of the environment is an important task in scene analysis and understanding. Better perception of the environment allows for enhanced decision making, which, in turn, enables very high-precision actions. To this end, we introduce in this work a new real-time deep learning approach for 3D multi-object detection for smart mobility not only on roads, but also on railways. To obtain the 3D bounding boxes of the objects, we modified a proven real-time 2D detector, YOLOv3, to predict 3D object localiz

The effect of uterocervical angle intervention on pain in retrovertion uterus: Evaluation of suprapubic compression: A retrospective observational study.

This study aims to identify the factors affecting pain perception during office hysteroscopy and to evaluate the impact of suprapubic pressure on pain levels. In this retrospectively designed study, patients undergoing office-based "no-touch" hysteroscopy were evaluated. Participants were divided into 2 groups based on their pain scores using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS): VAS < 4 (low pain) and VAS ≥ 4 (high pain). Patient age, cervical canal passage time, presence of suprapubic pressure for uterocervical angle correction, and other demographic and clinical variables were analyzed. A signific

Real-time vehicle control via edge cloud sensor fusion and CNN based perceptron.

Reliable real-time vehicle control is essential for intelligent transport systems where accurate perception and decision-making depend on fast sensor data processing. This study developed a hybrid edge-cloud method integrating deep learning with Internet of Things (IoT) sensor fusion for adaptive vehicle control. Ultrasonic range data were combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to enable object detection, stopping-time prediction, and braking control under varying environmental conditions. The CNN-based model was trained and evaluated under normal and simulated adverse driving scen

Vibrotactile sense might improve over time in paediatric subjects with type 1 diabetes-A mid-term follow-up using multifrequency vibrometry.

AIM: Impaired vibrotactile sense, mirroring diabetic peripheral neuropathy, is present among children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. This study aims to re-examine the vibrotactile sense of paediatric type 1 diabetes subjects in order to evaluate any alterations in the vibrotactile sense over time. METHODS: A VibroSense Meter I device was used to determine the vibrotactile perception thresholds (VPTs) for seven frequencies from the pulp of index and little fingers and for five frequencies from metatarsal heads one and five on the sole of the foot, of 37 children and adolescents with typ

Shifting perceptions of e-cigarette risk: A secondary analysis from a nationwide, randomized controlled clinical trial of e-cigarettes among smokers.

INTRODUCTION: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledges there is a continuum of risk for tobacco products, and that e-cigarettes are generally less harmful than combustible cigarettes. However, most US adults perceive e-cigarettes as more harmful than cigarettes, and negative perceptions have increased over time. Media coverage surrounding e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) may have played a role in the changing relative harm perceptions about e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. The goal of the present study was to compare relative risk perceptions

I Did OK, but Did I Like It? Using Ecological Momentary Assessment to Examine Perceptions of Social Interactions Associated With Severity of Social Anxiety and Depression.

Socially anxious and depressed individuals tend to evaluate their social interactions negatively, but little is known about the specific real-time contributors to these negative perceptions. The current study examined how affect ratings during social interactions predict later perceptions of those interactions, and whether this differs by social anxiety and depression severity. Undergraduate participants (N = 60) responded to a smartphone application that prompted participants to answer short questions about their current affect and social context up to 6 times a day for 2 weeks. At the end of

Improved visual outcomes of central retinal artery occlusion with local intra-arterial fibrinolysis beyond the conventional time window.

Local intra-arterial fibrinolysis (LIF) is a promising therapeutic option for CRAO. However, the narrow time window of 6 h has greatly limited the application of LIF. In this study, we explored the efficacy of LIF beyond the conventional time windows and compared the result with conservative therapy. This prospective study included 179 CRAO patients with baseline visual acuity (VA) ≤ 20/400 treated at Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. The mean time from vision loss to presentation was 5.5 days. 58 patients received conventional standard therapy (CST) alone.121 patients underwent LIF. Main o

Visual input shapes the auditory frequency responses in the inferior colliculus of mouse.

The integration of visual and auditory information is important for humans or animals to build an accurate and coherent perception of the external world. Although some evidence has shown some principles of the audiovisual integration, little insight has been gained into its functional purpose. In this study, we investigated the functional influence of dynamic visual input on auditory frequency processing by recording single unit activity in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICc). Results showed that the auditory responses of ICc neurons to sound frequencies could be enhanced or s

Intramodal and crossmodal pairing and anchoring in comparisons of successive stimuli.

Two experiments were conducted to study effects of modality, temporal position, and their interaction on comparisons of successive stimuli. In Experiment 1, intramodal (tone-tone and line-line) and crossmodal (tone-line and line-tone) stimulus pairs, with two interstimulus intervals (ISIs), 400 and 2,000 ms, were presented. Participants indicated which stimulus was the "stronger." Time-order errors (TOEs) were assessed using the D% measure and were found in all types of pairs. Variation in TOEs across conditions was well accounted for by changes in parameters (stimulus weights, reference level

Speech Perception Training in Children: The Retention of Benefits and Booster Training.

OBJECTIVES: Speech perception training can be a highly effective intervention to improve perception and language abilities in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Most studies of speech perception training, however, only measure gains immediately following training. Only a minority of cases include a follow-up assessment after a period without training. A critical unanswered question was whether training-related benefits are retained for a period of time after training has stopped. A primary goal of this investigation was to determine whether children retained training-related benefits 4
