Optical Coherence Tomography Can Predict Visual Acuity in Children with Optic Nerve Hypoplasia.

PURPOSE: Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) is a common cause of visual impairment in children. Clinical complexity can cause diagnostic delay and difficulties predicting visual outcome. We evaluated whether optical coherence tomography (OCT) can improve the diagnosis and prediction of vision. METHODS: Thirty-seven eyes with ONH from 12 girls and 8 boys, median age 10.5 years (range 2.8-18.9 years), were included in this cross-sectional cohort study. The majority, 17/20, had bilateral ONH. Ophthalmological assessments included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photography, measurement of

The Role of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Optic Nerve Head Edema: A Narrative Review.

Optic nerve head (ONH) edema is a clinical manifestation of many ocular and systemic disorders. Ocular and central nervous system imaging has been used to differentiate the underlying cause of ONH edema and monitor the disease course. ONH vessel abnormalities are among the earliest signs of impaired axonal transportation. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive method for imaging ONH and peripapillary vessels and has been used extensively for studying vascular changes in ONH disorders, including ONH edema. In this narrative review, we describe OCTA findings of the most

Optical Coherence Tomography in the Management of Skull Base Fibrous Dysplasia with Optic Nerve Involvement.

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) of the skull base can manifest with optic nerve compression. As most patients initially do not experience vision loss, controversy exists whether to proceed with prophylactic surgical decompression or elect for conservative observation. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), a physiologic imaging modality widely used to assess the condition of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), has been useful in monitoring compressive tumors on the optic nerve. This study evaluated potential use of OCT in management of patients with fibrous dysplasia and optic nerve involvem

Optical coherence tomography study of experimental anterior ischemic optic neuropathy and histologic confirmation.

PURPOSE: The optic nerve is part of the central nervous system, and interruption of this pathway due to ischemia typically results in optic atrophy and loss of retinal ganglion cells. In this study, we assessed in vivo retinal changes following murine anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and compared these anatomic measurements to that of histology. METHODS: We induced ischemia at the optic disc via laser-activated photochemical thrombosis, performed serial SD-OCT and manual segmentation of the retinal layers to measure the g

Optical coherence tomography in the evaluation of neurofibromatosis type-1 subjects with optic pathway gliomas.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common neurocutaneous disorder, with an approximate incidence of 1 in 3,500. Optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) develop in 15% of individuals with NF1, commonly in childhood. OPGs are difficult to detect via a clinical inspection in children, often requiring magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Given the significant visual risks associated with OPGs in NF1, there is a need for improved noninvasive techniques to diagnose OPGs in children; therefore, we studied optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a potential tool to assess optic nerve and retinal nerv
