[Expression and significance of pepsin in lingual tonsil hypertrophy].

Objective: To discuss the relationship between lingual tonsil hypertrophy and laryngopharyngeal reflux. Methods: Ninety-two patients who received throat surgery in Nanfang Hospital between October 2015 and October 2016 were enrolled. Twenty-six healthy volunteers were recruited as normal controls. All participants were assessed with the reflux finding score(RFS) and the size of lingual tonsils were evaluated using a clinical grading system proposed by Friedman under electronic laryngoscope. The score of reflux symptom index(RSI), personal history and medical history were gathered. Biopsy speci

Digital necrosis with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil.

BACKGROUND: Digital necrosis is a rare phenomenon of paraneoplastic syndrome associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. Since 1965, more than 70 cases have been reported worldwide in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old male smoker presented with Raynaud's phenomenon, proceeding to frank gangrene of the fingers. Working up the case finally pointed toward carcinoma of the tonsil as the underlying cause - a rare paraneoplastic manifestation. CONCLUSION: No definite etiology has been found to be the cause of Raynaud's phenomenon in this case of the squamous cell carcinoma of t

Lingual Tonsil Hypertrophy: rescuing the airway with videolaryngoscopy.

Lingual tonsils are lymphatic tissues located at the base of the tongue that may hypertrophy causing difficulty and sometimes inability to ventilate or intubate during anesthesia. Routine airway assessment fails to diagnose lingual tonsil hypertrophy. There is limited experience with use of videolaryngoscopy in cases of lingual tonsil hypertrophy. We present a case of difficult airway due to unanticipated lingual tonsil hypertrophy successfully managed by atypical video laryngoscope positioning.

Rectal tonsil: a case report and literature review.

The rectal tonsil, a reactive proliferation of lymphoid tissue located in the rectum, is rare. Histologically, benign lymphoid hyperplasia of the rectum is usually characterized by large lymphoid follicles with active germinal centers and a narrow surrounding mantle zone and marginal zone. This lesion is benign, but must be differentiated from the polypoid type of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas. In the current paper, we present a case of rectal tonsil in a 59-year-old woman. We describe the endoscopic ultrasound imaging findings with literature review.

Cartilaginous Choristoma of the Tonsil: Three Case Reports.

INTRODUCTION: Choristoma is defined as the presence of cells in abnormal locations due to defects during embryological development. The word choristoma implies a neoplasm; whereas heterotopia refers to a displaced tissue without necessarily being a swelling or a neoplasm. Literature contains reports of cartilaginous choristoma in the cervix, endometrium, breast tissue, and oral region. CASE REPORTS: Three cases of cartilaginous choristoma, which were accidentally found during microscopic examination of excised tonsil tissues, are presented. CONCLUSION: Choristomas may cause difficulty in the

Fibroepithelial Polyp of the Tonsil: Report of a Rare Case.

Pedunculated polyps of the palatine tonsil are rare benign tumours of tonsil. Most of the cases have been reported in adults with varying presenting symptoms. We report a 12-year-old male child who presented with 6 months history of difficulty in swallowing. There was no history of breathing difficulty, change in voice or history of trauma. Clinical examination revealed a 2x1 cm small pedunculated polyp arising from the superior pole of right tonsil which was excised under general anaesthesia. Left tonsil was normal. A diagnosis of fibroepithelial polyp of right palatine tonsil was made based

Ipsilateral radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil.

The purpose of this study is to update our institution's experience with ipsilateral radiation therapy (RT) for squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsillar area. Outcome study of 76 patients treated between 1984 and 2012 with ipsilateral RT for squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. Patients had either cT1 (n = 41, 54 %) or cT2 (n = 35, 46 %) primaries and cN0 (n = 27, 36 %), cN1 (n = 15, 20 %), cN2a (n = 8, 11 %), or cN2b (n = 26, 34 %) nodal disease. Of these, 32 (42 %) patients underwent a planned neck dissection and 21 (28 %) patients received concomitant chemotherapy. Median follow-up for al

Influence of tonsil size on sagittal cephalometric measurements.

INTRODUCTION: The role of tonsils in the origin of sagittal skeletodental abnormalities has been widely discussed in the literature but remains controversial. Data on the probable relationship between enlarged tonsils and the presence of these abnormalities were subjective. The aim of this study was to quantify the relationship between the space occupied by the palatine tonsils and sagittal cephalometric measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on a group of children divided into 5 subgroups according to the standardized tonsillar hypertrophy grading scale. C

A Pediatric Grading Scale for Lingual Tonsil Hypertrophy.

Lingual tonsil hypertrophy (LTH) is a common finding for children with residual obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) following an adenotonsillectomy. Secondary to the significant morbidity associated with OSA, identification and treatment of residual OSA are paramount. A dedicated LTH grading scale for children does not exist. The current adult LTH scale is impractical for children. Imaging is not routine for children, since it frequently requires sedation. We present a pediatric LTH grading scale with substantial interrater reliability to facilitate standardization of endoscopy findings and promote

Renal clear cell carcinoma and tonsil metastasis.

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common renal tumor in adults. Clear cell carcinoma represents 85% of all histological subtypes. In February 2012 a 72-year-old woman came to our department due to the appearance of massive hemoptysis and pharyngodinia. Previously, this patient was diagnosed with a renal cell carcinoma treated with left nephrectomy. We observed an exophytic, grayish, and ulcerated mass in the left tonsillar lodge and decided to subject the patient to an immediate tonsillectomy. Postoperative histology showed nests of cells with highly hyperchromatic nuclei and clear cytoplasm. T

Cartilaginous choristoma of tonsil: A hidden clinical entity.

Choristomas are aggregates of microscopically normal cells or tissues in aberrant locations. Cartilaginous choristomas of the oral cavity are rare and occur preferentially on the tongue and less often in sites such as the soft palate and gingiva. We report a case of cartilaginous choristoma in a 24-year-old male presenting with persistent tonsillitis. Histopathological examination demonstrated the presence of mature island of hyaline cartilage surrounded by lymphoid hyperplasias.

Chondroid choriostoma of palatine tonsil - a rare entity.

A choristoma or heterotopias is an aggregate of microscopically normal cells or tissues which occurs in aberrant locations. A choristoma is a tumour like mass, whereas heterotopias refers to a displaced tissue which is necessarily not a swelling or a neoplasm. We are reporting a case of a 24 year old female who presented with recurrent tonsillitis and halitosis. On examination, the tonsils were found to be enlarged. Because of the persistent symptoms, a tonsillectomy was performed. The histopathological examination showed features of chronic tonsillitis, along with presence of mature islands o…

The role of the palatine tonsils in the pathogenesis and treatment of psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a common chronic skin disease with strong genetic associations and environmental triggers. Patients with psoriasis develop sore throats much more frequently than nonpsoriatic individuals and it is well documented that streptococcal throat infections can trigger the onset of psoriasis, and such infections cause exacerbation of chronic psoriasis. It is now generally accepted that psoriatic lesions are caused by abnormal reactivity of specific T lymphocytes in the skin. However, it has been shown in recent years that activation of specific immunity is always preceded by activation of

Human papillomavirus genotype distribution in tonsil cancers.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of tonsil cancers has increased in several countries. French data on HPV prevalence in tonsil cancers are scarce. The objective of this study was thus to assess the overall and type specific HPV prevalence in tonsil histological samples. METHODS: This French retrospective multicenter study involved 12 centres located throughout the country. Were included 185 histological samples collected from year 2000 to 2009 with a validated diagnosis of tonsil invasive carcinomas. HPV prevalence was studied according to gender, age and histological type of cancer. RESULTS: Overa

Microarray analysis of tonsils of IgA nephropathy patients.

IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis. Its close relation with the tonsils is well known because tonsillitis sometimes causes aggravation of urinary findings or macrohematuria. However, the genes specific to the tonsils of IgAN patients are not clarified. To clarify the specific gene expression in the tonsils of IgAN patients, we performed tonsillectomy and corticosteroid IV therapy as a treatment of IgAN, analyzed the gene expression in the tonsils by microarray and compared it with that in tonsils from chronic tonsillitis patients. The upregulated genes seem to…

Immunoassay of lymphocyte subsets in ovine palatine tonsils.

By means of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and triple color flow cytometry (FCM), five commercial antibodies (anti-CD2, CD4, CD8, CD21, and CD45) were evaluated to quantify and localize the B- and T-lymphocytes in the ovine palatine tonsil. The results of both techniques were compared and evaluated. For the immunohistochemical analysis, three fixation methods were evaluated for their suitability to localize the different lymphocyte populations: 3.5% formaldehyde, zinc salts-based fixative and cryopreservation. The anti-CD45 antibody showed a positive reaction after all three fixation methods. The

Synchronous bilateral tonsil squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: We discuss the treatment and pathology of simultaneous bilateral metastatic palatine tonsil carcinoma. The current literature of the diagnosis and management of unknown primary oropharyngeal neoplasms is reviewed including the role of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. STUDY DESIGN: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA) of the palatine tonsil typically presents as a unilateral mass in the oropharynx or as a mass in the ipsilateral neck indicating a lymph node involved with metastasis. The carcinoma rarely presents with involvement of the contralateral lymph nodes, and this situat
