A retrospective comparative study of maxillofacial injury patterns caused by electric scooters and bicycles.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The emergence of shared stand-up electric scooters has led to an increase in their usage and, subsequently, an increase in the incidence of maxillofacial trauma. This study aimed to investigate the trauma pattern associated with the use of stand-up electric scooters compared with that related to the use of bicycles, which was a popular mode of personal mobility before the emergence of stand-up electric scooters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study investigated the medical records of patients who visited Wonju Christian Hospital for maxillofacial trauma due to the use of stand-up

Autotransplantation of premolars to replace maxillary incisors: a comparison with natural incisors.

The published literature contains no comprehensive studies that compare the outcome of premolar autotransplantation to the maxillary anterior region with natural incisors in the same patients. This article describes the gingival and periodontal conditions around premolars transplanted to the maxillary incisor region, subsequent to restoration. Forty-five premolars autotransplanted to the maxillary incisor region in 40 adolescent patients were evaluated after a mean observation period of 4.0 years. Mean age at surgery was 11.0 years. Established clinical criteria were used to assess tooth mobil

Endodontic Management of Dilacerated Maxillary Central Incisor fused to a Supernumerary Tooth using Cone Beam Computed Tomography: An Unusual Clinical Presentation.

AIM: The purpose of this report is to present a case of endodontic management of a dilacerated maxillary central incisor fused to supernumerary tooth unusually appearing as a labial tubercle using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a diagnostic aid. BACKGROUND: Anterior teeth are commonly encountered with aberrant anatomical variations in the crown, number of roots, and root canals. Fusion is an infrequent developmental abnormality in shape of the tooth caused by the union of two adjacent tooth germs. A complete knowledge of such complex anatomies is mandatory for a successful root canal

Increased Cell Proliferation and Gene Expression of Genes Related to Bone Remodeling, Cell Adhesion and Collagen Metabolism in the Periodontal Ligament of Unopposed Molars in Growing Rats.

Tooth eruption, the process by which teeth emerge from within the alveolar bone into the oral cavity, is poorly understood. The post-emergent phase of tooth eruption continues throughout life, in particular, if teeth are not opposed by antagonists. The aim of the present study was to better understand the molecular processes underlying post-emergent tooth eruption. Toward this goal, we removed the crowns of the maxillary molars on one side of the mouth of 14 young rats and examined gene expression patterns in the periodontal ligaments (PDLs) of the ipsilateral and contralateral mandibular mola

What Are the Parameters for Reoperation in Mandibular Third Molars Submitted to Coronectomy? A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Coronectomy is an alternative technique to conventional lower third molar removal that aims to decrease inferior alveolar nerve impairment. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with reoperation after mandibular third molar coronectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review sought scientific articles in the MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus (Elsevier), and Cochrane Library databases. Studies that evaluated reoperation after coronectomy and reported a minimum follow-up of 6 months were included. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analys

Pulp canal obliteration after traumatic injuries in permanent teeth - scientific fact or fiction?

Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a frequent finding associated with pulpal revascularization after luxation injuries of young permanent teeth. The underlying mechanisms of PCO are still unclear, and no experimental scientific evidence is available, except the results of a single histopathological study. The lack of sound knowledge concerning this process gives rise to controversies, including the most suitable denomination. More than a mere semantic question, the denomination is an important issue, because it reflects the nature of this process, and directly impacts the treatment plan decision

Conservative treatment of an ankylosed tooth after delayed replantation: a case report.

An 8-year-old boy sustained avulsion of his upper right maxillary central incisor and lateral luxation of his upper left maxillary incisors. Subsequently, the upper right maxillary central incisor developed replacement resorption, and both upper left maxillary incisors developed pulpal canal obliteration. In the ankylosed tooth, decoronation procedure was performed, and in the 44-month follow-up period the involved alveolar site showed vertical apposition of bone and continuing replacement resorption. Decoronation is a surgical procedure that allows preservation of the bone volume for the futu

Results after replantation of avulsed permanent teeth. I. Endodontic considerations.

Following avulsion and replantation, teeth are at risk for infection and infection related resorption (IRR). Severe discolorations of tooth crowns and cervical root fractures are common. This study presents data on endodontic related complications of avulsed teeth replanted following an extraoral endodontic treatment. Periodontal aspects will be discussed in the second part of the present publication. Twenty-eight permanent teeth in 24 patients aged seven to 17 years were replanted after avulsion. All teeth could be evaluated. In all teeth extraoral endodontic treatment by retrograde insertion…

Aggressive dentigerous cyst with ectopic central incisor.

Dentigerous cysts form from accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the crown of an unerupted tooth. They cause several difficulties such as swelling, non-eruption of the involved teeth, and displacement of adjacent teeth, and thus require early detection and prompt treatment. Treatment ranges from marsupialisation to enucleation. Enucleation is rarely used in children compared with marsupialisation. This paper discusses successful use of enucleation for treating a dentigerous cyst and explains the need for such a radical procedure.

Immediate, non-submerged, root-analogue zirconia implant in single tooth replacement.

This report demonstrates the successful clinical use of a modified root-analogue zirconia implant for immediate single tooth replacement. A right maxillary premolar was removed and a custom-made, root-analogue, roughened zirconia implant with macro-retentions in the interdental space was fabricated and placed into the extraction socket 4 days later. Four months after root implantation a composite crown was cemented. No complications occurred during the healing period. An excellent esthetic and functional result was achieved with the composite crown. No clinically noticeable bone resorption or

The accuracy and precision of third molar development as an indicator of chronological age in Hispanics.

The accuracy and precision of chronological age estimation based on the stages of third molar tooth development was studied in a sample of 679 radiographs from individuals of Hispanic origin. The age range was 14.0 to 25.0 years. Eight raters from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch evaluated the radiographs according to Demirjian's schematic definitions of crown and root formation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chronology of third molar development in Hispanics following the protocol of a previous study. Within the Hispanic population, the

Avoiding "the space" by the treatment of compromised teeth.

The advent of implant therapy has given new a dimension to dentistry particularly where teeth have been irretrievably damaged or pathologically involved. There are many situations however, where endodontic or combined therapy may effectively retain compromised teeth and clinicians should carefully evaluate evidence-based treatment. The main areas discussed are: transverse and crown root fractures and invasive cervical resorption. Transverse root fractures have an excellent natural healing capacity and will also respond favourably to treatment if pulp necrosis occurs in the coronal segment. Stu

Delayed maturation and reduced crown width of the permanent first mandibular molar in all subgroups of cleft lip and palate.

OBJECTIVES: Surgical closure of the cleft damages nerves and blood supply in the area and may possibly negatively influence dental development in children with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Previous studies of the permanent first mandibular molar (M1inf ) in children with unilateral complete CLP found delayed maturation and decreased follicle/crown width before any surgical interventions. This study aimed to investigate if these findings are representative for the total population of individuals born with CLP. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: A population-based consecutive longitudinal sample of

Bilateral fusion of permanent maxillary incisors.

Dental fusion is a rare developmental anomaly, which is included in the anomalies of tooth morphology or shape. Fusion can occur at the level of enamel or enamel and dentin, which results in the formation of a single tooth with enlarged clinical crown. Fusion is more common in deciduous dentition. Incisors are reported to be fused in primary and permanent dentition, but bilateral fusion is a rare occurrence. The prevalence of bilateral fusion in the permanent dentition is less frequent than unilateral fusion and is reported to be around 0.05%. The authors report a case of a 20-year-old male wi

Dilaceration of maxillary central incisor: a literature review.

The main purpose of this review is to present the aetiological factors and the mechanism that cause dilaceration of the maxillary central incisors. In early developmental stages, the permanent tooth germ of the maxillary incisor is situated palatally and superiorly to the apex of the primary incisor and gradually changes direction in a labial direction with its crown coming closer to the resorbing primary root. For reasons of this close relationship between the permanent tooth germ and the apex of the primary incisor, it is believed that an acute trauma to the primary predecessor can cause dil
