A case of an extensive dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus leading to epiphora and nasal obstruction.

BACKGROUND: The dentigerous cyst is defined as a cyst that originates by the separation of the follicle from around the crown of an unerupted tooth. The clinical examination reveals a missing tooth or teeth and possibly a hard swelling, sometimes resulting in facial asymmetry and possible pathologic fracture. A large maxillary cyst involves the whole sinus and can transmit pressure to the walls of the sinus and, consequently, cause ophthalmologic and nasal symptoms to develop. OBJECTIVES: To report the case of an extensive dentigerous cyst with swelling of the right cheek, accompanied by unil

A comparative evaluation of immediate dental implant with autogenous versus synthetic guided bone regeneration.

Immediate implant is a placement of the implant immediately into fresh extraction socket site after tooth extraction and is considered to be a predictable and acceptable procedure. The present work is designed to evaluate the periodontal condition after immediate implant placement and the success rate of implant with autogenous versus synthetic guided bone regeneration. Twenty adult male patients with an endodontic failure, tooth fracture decayed tooth (hopeless tooth) were included in this study. Patients were divided into 2 groups: One group (I) received immediate implants augmented with aut

Management of traumatic facial injuries.

Whether minor or major, traumatic injuries to the maxillofacial area have far-reaching physical and emotional effects. Because the dentition dictates facial form and function, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a dental specialist with a minimum of four years of hospital-based surgical training, is uniquely qualified to manage these injuries. At times, the expertise of the general dentist and other dental specialists may be needed to provide definitive care. Several cases are provided to illustrate management of facial trauma.

Mandibular Angle Fractures and Third Molar Management: A 10-Year Retrospective Study on Clinical Outcomes and Complication Patterns.

Mandibular angle fractures represent one of the most frequent facial injuries and are often associated with the presence of a third molar within the fracture line. Whether to extract or retain the third molar during surgical treatment remains a topic of ongoing debate. This retrospective study reviewed 218 patients treated for mandibular angle fractures between 2015 and 2025 at the "Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Umberto I General Hospital, Sapienza University of Rome," to describe clinical outcomes and complication patterns associated with third molar management. All patients had radiol

The effect of preparation taper on the resistance to fracture of monolithic zirconia crowns.

OBJECTIVE: Monolithic zirconia crowns have become a viable alternative to conventional layered restorations. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the taper, and thus wall thickness, of the abutment or pre-defined cement space affect the fracture resistance or fracture mode of monolithic zirconia crowns. METHODS: A model tooth was prepared with a taper of 15° and a shallow circumferential chamfer preparation (0.5 mm). Two additional models were made based on the master model with a taper of 10° and 30° using computer-aided design software. Twenty monolithic 3rd generation translucent

[HIV-associated lymphoma -- an unusual cause of pathological mandibular fracture].

Despite the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) remains a common malignancy in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, especially the plasmablastic variant. About 50% of lymphomas in HIV patients are extranodal and half of them occur in the head and neck area. The main oral symptoms are pain, swelling, numbness and tooth mobility. We report the case of a 52-year-old patient with a known HIV infection and fracture of the angular region of the mandible. The fracture did not unite following open reduction and osteosynth

Investigation on Flexural Fracture Behaviour of Bolted Spherical Joints with Crack Propagation in Screw Threads.

Bolted spherical joints, due to their prominent merits in installation, have been widely used in modern spatial structures. Despite significant research, there is a lack of understanding of their flexural fracture behaviour, which is important for the catastrophe prevention of the whole structure. Given the recent development to fill this knowledge gap, it is the objective of this paper to experimentally investigate the flexural bending capacity of the overall fracture section featured by a heightened neutral axis and fracture behaviour related to variable crack depth in screw threads. Accordi

Biologic restoration: the effects of composite inlays on patient treatment plans.

A technique for restoration of decayed and fractured teeth with composite inlays or onlays is presented. This approach conserves the tooth structure, requires less preprosthetic periodontal surgical intervention, and provides excellent functional results, while minimizing the incidence of post-therapeutic endodontic involvement. Two thousand seven teeth were restored using this technique over a period of 120 months, with a mean time of 59.6 months in function. The technique is described, and the advantages of this treatment modality are discussed.

Oral examination and radiographic evaluation of the dentition in wild cats from Namibia.

Feline tooth resorption has been widely reported in domestic cats and sporadically described in other felidae. The goal of the present study was to determine the prevalence of tooth resorption and to report other dental problems in a population of wild felidae. Observations of dental disorders and anomalies were made in skulls from 73 wild felidae (cheetahs, leopards, caracals, African wildcats, and lions) originating from Namibia. In addition, radiographs were taken in 43 cases to determine signs of bone and root pathology. Radiographs showed varying stages of tooth resorption in 16.0% of the

Transient root resorption after dental trauma: the clinician's dilemma.

UNLABELLED: The diagnostic shortcomings encountered in the clinical evaluation of pulpal and periodontal healing subsequent to trauma comprise a major problem in dental traumatology. An acute dental trauma may imply impact to the hard dental tissues and damage to the pulp and periodontium (including surrounding alveolar bone). In the case of luxation injuries, the trauma often results in rupture of the neurovascular supply at the level of the apical foramen, whereas in a root fracture, the same occurs at the level of the fracture. Conventional diagnostic criteria for pulpal status (coronal dis

Removal versus retention of asymptomatic third molars in mandibular angle fractures: a randomized controlled trial.

The treatment dilemma provided by asymptomatic third molars in mandibular angle fractures remains controversial. This prospective randomized controlled trial was undertaken to determine whether there is an advantage to extraction or retention of the third molar whilst repairing a mandibular angle fracture. Sixty-four patients were allocated randomly to the two treatment groups. All underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with standard postoperative care. The primary outcome measure was uncomplicated fracture healing. Secondary measures were surgical duration, malocclusion, wound

The effect of increased crown-to-implant ratio on single-tooth locking-taper implants.

PURPOSE: It has been proposed that increased crown heights lead to greater crestal stresses on dental implants, crestal bone loss, and other complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of increased crown-to-implant ratio (C/IR) on single-tooth implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between July 2001 and August 2003. The cohort was composed of patients who had at least one single-tooth Bicon implant restored with a cementless restoration and attended recall examinations in 2004, 2005, and 2007, during which several clinical and radio

Clinical evaluation of forceps eruption: reestablishing biologic width and restoring no restorable teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Complicated crown- root fractures, extended caries and iatrogenic destruction often result in insufficient sound tooth structures and compromise the biologic width. Two common options for re-establishing flap with osseous surgery. Although some advantages are related to these two options, but coronal movement of gingival and alveolar bone in orthodontic extrusion, esthetic problem and inconsistent topography between the involved tooth and the adjacent teeth following osseous surgery are the involved tooth and the adjacent teeth following osseous surgery are the major disadvantage

Frequency and type of dental traumas in mandibular body and condyle fractures.

Dental injuries in association with 207 mandibular fractures were evaluated from patient files and radiographs. It was shown that 32% of the dentulous patients with condylar fractures had dental injuries, approximately 3.7 traumatised teeth per patient, most of which were dental hard tissue injuries and situated typically in the maxillary molar region. Dental injuries were diagnosed in 30% in association with mandibular corpus fractures, approximately 3.6 traumatised teeth per patient, and injuries were more often dental luxations in the anterior part of the mandible. It was found that 143 tee
