External inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) is one of the most undesirable potential repercussions of various types of trauma and traumatic injuries to the tooth and its structure. This detrimental phenomenon may lead to severe complications, the consequent destruction of dental tissues, and eventual tooth loss. In the presented case, following the autogenous transplantation of tooth #17 as the host-tissue replacement for tooth #18, signs of EIRR were radiographically detected after 6 months. However, the thorough preparation of root canals, which involves complete cleaning and shaping, in ad…

Tooth autotransplantation is an effective treatment to replace missing teeth. Digital planning can facilitate successful autotransplantation. Guiding templates are highly recommended when performing cases in healed ridges in the posterior area to reduce excessive bone loss and increase the chances of fitting the donor tooth in the new socket. This case report highlights the use of 3D planning tools and fully guided drilling templates for successful tooth autotransplantation in the posterior area. Two tooth autotransplantations were performed in a 51-year-old patient using mandibular third mola

INTRODUCTION: Tooth extraction represents a global concern, as it directly affects the quality of life. Despite of advancements in modern dentistry, extraction remains the only available option in not a few cases. The most common causes of tooth loss are caries and periodontal diseases, with other less common causes like trauma, orthodontic treatment, and patient preference in low socioeconomic areas. This study aims to ascertain the frequency, causes, and patterns of adult tooth extractions among Iraqi patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients attending the clinics of oral surgery in the den…

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of amalgam restorations with and without overhangs on alveolar bone loss via digitized radiographs for subjects of varying ages and overhang widths. The first phase of this study compared the alveolar bone loss among teeth with clinically acceptable two-surface amalgam restorations with a control surface on the same tooth. The second phase was similar to the first phase with the exception that it compared defective amalgam restorations (those containing amalgam overhanging approximal margins) with the control surface on the same tooth. Alveolar bone resorption is frequently observed after tooth extraction. Atrophy of the alveolar ridge may cause esthetic and surgical problems in prosthetic dentistry. Augmentative measures may thus be required to guarantee optimal prosthetic replacement of the lost tissues. Augmentative bone treatment may result in extensive surgical interventions and increased treatment costs. Alveolar ridge prophylaxis immediately upon tooth extraction may reduce such sequelae for both, the treating dentist and the patient. Attempts to reduce alveolar bone resorption have included the placement of natural r

Periodontal diseases have several causes, amongst them, by foreign bodies. In this case report, an 11-year-old child who lived in a rural area and has never been treated by a dentist presented an extensive horizontal bone loss and edema on the region of tooth 44. The diagnosis of foreign body was obtained after biopsy, since an elastic band around the middle of the root tooth was found. The elastic band was not radiopaque, and the patient did not inform that she found the elastic band on the floor of the school and introduced the tooth by herself. Based on the case reported, it is concluded th

Chronic periodontitis, along with associated clinical findings such as pathologic tooth migration, diastema, functional and aesthetic aberrations, poses an immense challenge to a dental professional. These findings convert clinical decision making into a daunting task and adversely affect the prognosis and the treatment plan for the presenting clinical problem. An interdisciplinary approach aimed at restoring functional and aesthetic needs of the affected individual within the limitations of such a compromised clinical scenario may be a viable alternative to any radical treatment causing loss

Aggressive periodontitis (AgP) comprises a group of rare, often severe, rapidly progressive forms of periodontitis mostly characterized by an early age of clinical manifestation and a distinctive tendency for cases to aggregate in families. Abnormal dental morphology and position have been associated with severe periodontal diseases. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of multiple dental anomalies associated with AgP. This paper reports a case of unusual association of multiple dental anomalies to AgP. Clinical findings and history led to the diagnosis of localized AgP, and radiologi

Mammals and reptiles have evolved divergent adaptations for processing abrasive foods. Mammals have occluding, diphyodont dentitions with taller teeth (hypsodonty), more complex occlusal surfaces, continuous tooth eruption, and forms of prismatic enamel that prolong the functional life of each tooth [1, 2]. The evolution of prismatic enamel in particular was a key innovation that made individual teeth more resilient to abrasion in early mammals [2-4]. In contrast, reptiles typically have thin, non-prismatic enamel, and shearing, polyphyodont dentitions with multi-cusped or serrated tooth crown

OBJECTIVES: This narrative review summarizes the current evidence about the role that the fabrication and presence of dental prostheses and tooth-related factors have on the initiation and progression of gingivitis and periodontitis.
FINDINGS: Placement of restoration margins within the junctional epithelium and supracrestal connective tissue attachment can be associated with gingival inflammation and, potentially, recession. The presence of fixed prostheses finish lines within the gingival sulcus or the wearing of partial, removable dental prostheses does not cause gingivitis if patients are

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of surface potentials of tooth hard tissue on bone remodeling.
METHODS: After insured the surface potentials of human extracted teeth with electrochemical methods, teeth sections and artificial hydroxyapatite were implanted into 25 rabbits' tibiae. The rabbits were sacrificed at 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after implantation, respectively. The bone regeneration was compared between opposite two sides (cathode side and anode side) of tooth sections using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity detecting and tetracy

We hypothesise that previous accounts describing a complete tooth loss/replacement relate to proliferation of the oral mucosa that conceals the teeth prior to the breeding period and to the use of maceration techniques that could have removed all teeth with an incompletely mineralised base.

The normal arrangement of the transseptal fibers in the dentition is one of a completely horizontal system that links the mesial and the distal aspects of each tooth within the dental arch, from the most distal tooth of one side to the most distal tooth of the other, across the midline. This continuous fiber band is parallel to the occlusal plane, being attached to each tooth coronal to the level of the interradicular alveolar bone crest and apical to the cementoenamel junction. Alteration of the occlusal plane will be mirrored by a similar change in the plane of the transseptal fiber system.

One of the biggest challenges in orthodontic management of adult patients is the presence of mutilated dentition, which is characterized by severe tooth loss and subsequent tipping of adjacent teeth or extruding of antagonists, worsening the malocclusion. As they offer a solid anchor for intricate tooth movement, temporary anchorage devices (TADs) have proven invaluable to orthodontic treatment. In this case study, we highlight the importance of TADs in getting the best possible treatment outcomes while describing the effective management of a patient with mutilated dentition. TADs made it pos…

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent oral microbial biofilm-driven chronic inflammatory disease. If unmanaged, periodontitis leads to progressive destruction of the ligamentous attachments of teeth to the alveolar bone and resorption of the alveolar bone. It eventually leads to tooth hypermobility and loss. Periodontitis commonly causes overlying maxillary sinus inflammation (mucositis), reflected on radiographic imaging as maxillary sinus mucosal thickening. While uncommon, advanced periodontitis (stage III/IV) or chronic perio-endo lesions can lead to purulent odontogenic sinusitis (ODS). Thi

Chronic periodontitis is one of the most frequent and severe diseases involving the tooth. Untreated, they can lead to tooth loss. Our study involved 67 patients with chronic marginal periodontitis who underwent tooth extraction, of which 29 had moderate periodontal lesions and 38 severe periodontal lesions. The microscopic study of the dental pulp revealed significant changes in all patients. In patients with moderate periodontitis the pulp tissue was found to be the site of an enhanced process of collagenous fibrosis associated with a moderate inflammatory infiltrate, dystrophic mineralizati…

Traditionally, orthodontic treatment has be involved with implant dentistry to correct malocclusion prior to surgical procedures. Most recently, orthodontics has become an invaluable adjunct to implant dentistry for treatment plans involving tooth replacement for sites diagnosed with localized advanced periodontitis. Loss of vertical bone height as a result of periodontal disease is difficult to overcome with hard tissue grafting. However, in cases where the failing or failed tooth is still present, an alternative method involving pre-implant orthodontics is being utilized to generate vertical
