The derived minimal effect level (DMEL) for enzymes in industrial practice.

Twenty years ago the European Union introduced regulations known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Assessment and restriction of Chemicals). Amongst other things, these required a defined minimum effect level (DMEL) for respiratory allergens. A DMEL of 60 ng/m3 was established for industrial enzymes as the starting point for risk management/occupational hygiene. In the present work, an 11-year set of airborne exposure measurements and employee health information was harvested from three enzyme-producing factory locations in Denmark which use this DMEL as their starting point/action standard.

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous electrolysis versus dry needling in patients with chronic low back pain a double-blind randomized clinical trial.

The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was analysed the effects of percutaneous electrolysis versus electrical dry needling on pain, functionality, fear of movement and quality of live and sleep in patients with chronic low back pain. A total of 64 patients with chronic low back pain (age 46.45 ± 10.5) were randomly assigned to percutaneous electrolysis on the lumbar nerve root of L3 to L5, or electrical dry needling on the trigger points. Both groups received once a week for 6 weeks. The main outcome measures were pressure pain threshold and disability were the main, all outcomes were …

An Evidence-Tiered Biomimetic Design Space Workflow for the Conceptual Design of Elderly-Care Robots.

BACKGROUND: Early-stage elderly-care robot design requires biological analogies to be translated without turning qualitative inspiration into unvalidated numerical evidence. METHODS: We audited 15 initial variables and retained a four-dimensional exploratory space: nominal shell-edge radius (V06), pre-braking trigger distance (V09), translational speed (V11), and commanded deceleration (V12). Latin hypercube samples were filtered by V09 - V112/(2V12) ≥ 0. A derived warning margin proxy, I5 = 1 - [V112/(2V12)]/V09, was evaluated with fixed-seed feasibility, distribution, coverage, cluster, coo

Impact of midazolam on salivary glands: a comprehensive analysis of oxidative biochemistry, morphological changes, and salivary composition.

This study aimed to explore how the long-term use of midazolam (MDZ) influences the biochemistry and structural alterations in the salivary glands of adult rats, along with the function of their saliva. Twenty male Wistar rats were allocated in two groups (n = 10) and received daily intragastric administration of 0.1mg/kg MDZ solubilized in distilled water or only distilled water (control) for 30 days. Then, saliva, parotid, and submandibular glands were collected to perform histomorphometry analyses and biochemical assays. The groups were compared by using the Student t test (p < 0.05). MDZ d

Turning Neutrophil Cell Death Deadly in the Context of Hypertensive Vascular Disease.

Hypertensive vascular disease (HVD) is a major health burden globally and is a comorbidity commonly associated with other metabolic diseases. Many factors are associated with HVD including obesity, diabetes, smoking, chronic kidney disease, and sterile inflammation. Increasing evidence points to neutrophils as an important component of the chronic inflammatory response in HVD. Neutrophils are abundant in the circulation and can respond rapidly upon stimulation to deploy an armament of antimicrobial effector functions. One of the outcomes of neutrophil activation is the generation of neutrophil

Recalcitrant intussusception: exploring potential associations with Helicobacter pylori infection - a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception, a common cause of abdominal pain in children, often lacks clear underlying causes and is mostly idiopathic. Recurrence, though rare, raises clinical concerns, with rates escalating after each episode. Factors like pathological lead points and Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) are associated with recurrent cases. On the other hand, the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), often asymptomatic, in children has been declining. Although its infection is reported to be linked with HSP, its role in recurrent intussusception remains unexplored. Further research is ne

Mycobacterium paratuberculosis: A HERV Turn-On for Autoimmunity, Neurodegeneration, and Cancer?

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) are remnants of ancient retroviral infections that, over millions of years, became integrated into the human genome. While normally inactive, environmental stimuli such as infections have contributed to the transcriptional reactivation of HERV-promoting pathological conditions, including the development of autoimmunity, neurodegenerative disease and cancer. What infections trigger HERV activation? Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is a pluripotent driver of human disease. Aside from granulomatous diseases, Crohn's disease, sarcoidosis a

Endoscope-Assisted Greater Occipital Nerve Decompression for Migraines, Occipital Neuralgia, and New Daily Persistent Headaches.

In the occipital trigger site for migraine, the greater occipital nerve (GON) is thought to be irritated by surrounding structures, including the semispinalis capitis muscle and occipital artery (OA), producing headaches in the back of the neck. Thus, standard decompression involves removal of surrounding tissue and dissection away from the vessel. The authors noticed a consistent pattern between the GON and OA more distally: the OA approaching laterally and diving under the GON, the OA looping back over the GON and intertwining with the medial branch of the GON, and lastly the OA traveling pa

Little bits of dragonfly history repeating exemplified by a new Pennsylvanian family.

During its 320 Myr evolution, dragon- and damselfly (Odonata) wing morphology underwent intense modifications. The resulting diversity prompted comparative analyses focusing on phylogeny. However, homoplasy proved to plague wing-related characters. Concurrently, limited benefits were obtained from considering fossil taxa, similarly impacted. Herein, we investigate two aspects particularly affected by convergence, namely the acquisition of vein-like structuring elements derived from regular cross-venation, termed conamina; and the evolution of butter knife wing shape. Conamen implementation is

Genome-wide transcriptomic analysis of highly virulent African swine fever virus infection reveals complex and unique virus host interaction.

African swine fever virus (ASFV), one of the most devastating emerging swine pathogens in China, causes nearly 100 % mortality in naive herds. Here, whole-transcriptome RNA-seq analysis was conducted in porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) infected with Pig/Heilongjiang/2018 (Pig/HLJ/18) ASFV at different time points. Our data suggested that ASFV genes expression demonstrated a time-depended pattern and ASFV early genes were involved in antagonizing host innate immunity. Moreover, viral small RNA (vsRNA) was generated as well. Meanwhile, transcriptome analysis of host genes suggested a strong i

Development of a Well-Characterized Rhesus Macaque Model of Ebola Virus Disease for Support of Product Development.

Ebola virus (EBOV) is a negative-sense RNA virus that can infect humans and nonhuman primates with severe health consequences. Development of countermeasures requires a thorough understanding of the interaction between host and pathogen, and the course of disease. The goal of this study was to further characterize EBOV disease in a uniformly lethal rhesus macaque model, in order to support development of a well-characterized model following rigorous quality standards. Rhesus macaques were intramuscularly exposed to EBOV and one group was euthanized at predetermined time points to characterize

Behçet's Disease and Tuberculosis: A Complex Relationship.

UNLABELLED: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by recurrent orogenital ulceration and several systemic manifestations (such as gastrointestinal involvement, vascular disease or arthritis). The pathogenesis is still unknown but the trigger role of certain pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis is well documented. Furthermore, patients with BD are more susceptible to tuberculosis due to immunity defects. Here, we describe the case of a 70-year-old woman with a history of recurrent oral aphthae and inflammatory arthritis presenting with extensive thrombosis of left

Oncogenic spiral by infectious pathogens: Cooperation of multiple factors in cancer development.

Chronic infection is one of the major causes of cancer, and there are several mechanisms for infection-mediated oncogenesis. Some pathogens encode gene products that behave like oncogenic factors, hijacking cellular pathways to promote the survival and proliferation of infected cells in vivo. Some of these viral oncoproteins trigger a cellular damage defense response leading to senescence; however, other viral factors hinder this suppressive effect, suggesting that cooperation of those viral factors is important for malignant transformation. Coinfection with multiple agents is known to acceler
