Research on risk factors of ischemic cerebrovascular disease in postmenopausal women based on the social-ecological model.

OBJECTIVE: Based on the social-ecological model, this study aimed to comprehensively explore factors affecting the risk of ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICVD) in postmenopausal women to provide theoretical bases for further prevention and intervention for postmenopausal women. METHODS: Postmenopausal women who underwent medical examinations in one health-checkup agency in Tianjin from May 2015 to October 2015 were enrolled in this study. The ICVD 10-year Risk Assesment Form developed by the research team of the National "Tenth Five-Year Plan" research project was used to assess the factor

Cook-Medley hostility, anger, and the Type A behavior pattern in Finland.

According to research, hostility is a reliable predictor of coronary heart disease. Cook-Medley-defined hostility in particular has been seen as a significant precursor of coronary disease. It is important to specify the kind of hostility measured by the Cook-Medley scale. The present study examined the construct validity of the Cook-Medley scale for a sample of 219 university students in Finland, a country with a high incidence of coronary heart disease. The results supported the interpretation of the Cook-Medley scale primarily as a measure of cynicism and distrust. On the basis of our previ

Hostility-related variables and plasma lipid levels.

The present study was conducted to examine whether lipid levels would be related to cynical hostility (an attitudinal component of hostility), expressive hostility (a behavioral component of hostility), and neurotic hostility (an emotional component of hostility). Subjects were 74 men and 54 women who were free of potential medical factors affecting lipoprotein levels. Across both genders, expressive hostility was found to be positively related to total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Neurotic hostility was not related to lipid levels for either men or women. These results are c

Hostility as a risk factor for mortality and ischemic heart disease in men.

We report the association between hostility and the incidence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) in 3,750 Finnish men aged 40-59. Hostility was assessed from self-ratings on irritability, ease of anger-arousal, and argumentativeness, and four groups were formed from the summed hostility ratings. At baseline, the age-adjusted relative risk (RR) of the prevalence of angina pectoris between the highest and lowest hostility groups was 2.88 (95% confidence limits (CL), range 1.71-4.77). A three-year follow-up yielded 65 deaths and 109 IHD-incident cases. Hostility did not predict IHD among healthy men

Risk factors for myocardial infarction: the importance of relaxation.

Several risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were examined, including history of smoking and hypercholesterolemia, income, education, coronary-prone behaviour by Structured Interview (SI) and the type and quality of stress-reducing relaxing activities, in a case-control study. Our sample included 100 AMI patients (80 males and 20 females, with mean ages 57.3 and 64.1 years, respectively), as well as 100 age- and sex-matched controls. Univariate differences between cases and controls were significant for history of smoking, income level, SI-defined hostility, SI-defined suppressio

Behavioral assessment of the type A behavior pattern.

The present study attempted to assess systematically a set of behavioral subcomponents associated with the Type A behavior pattern. Sixty middle-aged men underwent the structured interview (SI) and a repeated version of the SI after a four-month interval. A high degree of interrater reliability was established for a number of behavioral components including speed and volume of speech, motoric activity, expiratory sighs, response latency, interruptions, unevenness of speech, plosive words, and potential for hostility. In general, these behaviors were stable over the four-month interval, althoug

Violent women, blame attribution, crime, and personality.

BACKGROUND: The attribution of blame for criminal act has an impact, both on the way the offender must come to terms with the offence and on the risk of recidivism. Blame attribution has been found to be related to the type of crime and personality. AIMS: This study examined the relationship of blame attribution and feelings of guilt in violent female offenders, according to factors related to crime, background and personality. METHODS: The Gudjonsson Blame Attribution Inventory (BAI) and the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ) were administered to 58 violent female offenders. The Hare Psychop

Novel prion protein conformation and glycotype in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel molecular and pathological phenotype of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Patient A 69-year-old woman with behavioral and personality changes followed by rapidly evolving dementia. RESULTS: Postmortem examination of the brain showed intracellular prion protein deposition and axonal swellings filled with amyloid fibrils. Biochemical analysis of the pathological prion protein disclosed a previously unrecognized PrP(Sc) tertiary structure lacking diglycosylated species. Genetic analysis revealed a wild-type prion protein gene. The prion agent responsible for this atypical

The significance of personality disorder and traits in short-term psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy for major depression.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown inconsistent results regarding the impact of personality disorder (PD) on psychotherapy outcomes for depression. There is a scarcity of studies comparing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with short-term psychodynamic therapy (STPP). This study aimed to compare outcome of STPP and CBT in depressed patients with and without PD and investigate whether PD or specific PD traits differentially affected outcome in STPP and CBT. METHODS: One hundred outpatients with major depression (PD, n=28; NoPD, n=72) were randomized to STPP or CBT and followed up after 28 weeks.

Proneness to Alcohol use Disorder or Pathological Gambling as Differentially Determined by Early Parental and Personality Factors.

Owing to growing alcoholism and gambling, numerous variables have been the subject of study to better understand the causes of such addictions. This study aims to investigate personality factors, parental styles in upbringing and early exposure to alcoholism integratively to shed light on how such variables generally shape vulnerability for addictive behaviours and alcohol use disorder (AUD) as well as pathological gambling (PG), separately. The sample consisted of 150 for the inpatient groups (78 AUD and 72 PG) and 102 participants for the control group. The inpatient group comprised "pure" A

A controlled study of methylphenidate in the treatment of attention deficit disorder, residual type, in adults.

Thirty-seven adult patients meeting the Utah criteria for attention deficit disorder, residual type, were entered into a double-blind crossover trial of methylphenidate and placebo. A moderate-to-marked therapeutic response occurred in 21 (57%) of the patients while receiving methylphenidate and in four (11%) while receiving placebo, a highly significant difference statistically and clinically. The responding patients showed significant improvement in the following areas: attentional difficulty, motor overactivity, affective lability, and impulsivity. The diagnosis of attention deficit disorde

Psychiatric disorders and muscle tenderness in episodic and chronic migraine.

This review first reports on the data concerning the relationship between migraine and personality traits and psychiatric disorders. The relationship between migraine and tenderness of the pericranial and cervical muscles is then discussed. In one study, a psychologic assessment was performed in 56 women with migraine, and the Minnesota Multiphase Personality Inventory (MMPI) and State Trait Anxiety Inventory were administered at baseline (T0) and after 6-7 years (T2). Frequency, severity and duration of migraine were recorded at T0, after treatment (T1) and at T2, and their relationship to th

[The age peculiarities of nonpsychotic forms of psychogenic disorders caused by everyday stressors].

Three groups of patients were examined in the period of 1994-1999: adolescent (aged 15-18 years), middle-aged (25-59 years) and elderly (60 years and older) with non-psychotic mental disorders developing under the influence of everyday stressors. The highest tolerability to stressors was detected in the middle-aged group. The dominating stressors in the groups were: social situations in the adolescences; interfamily conflicts--in the middle-aged patients and a presence of disease--in the elderly. Stressogenic affective disorders occurred most often in all the groups; anxious-phobic states prev

Clinical aspects of hysteria.

This is a clinical study of 80 patients, diagnosed as suffering from hysteria, who attended the psychiatric clinic in Khartoum Hospital over a period of 3 years. The incidence of hysteria was 10%, the female-male ratio 15:1, and young age-groups predominate. 60% were essentially of normal personality. The clinical picture was fairly consistent. Hysterical conversion was the commonest clinical form (76%) and the dissociative type was rare. The patients with recurrent and vague bodily complaints could be labeled as histrionic.

Hostility and health: current status of a psychosomatic hypothesis.

Recent research has renewed interest in the potential influence of hostility on physical health. This review indicates that the evidence available from prospective studies, although not entirely consistent, suggests that hostile persons may be at increased risk for subsequent coronary heart disease and other life-threatening illnesses. Further, several plausible mechanisms possibly linking hostility and health have been articulated and subjected to initial evaluation. Hostile individuals display heightened physiological reactivity in some situations, report greater degrees of interpersonal con

[Personality and psychic deadaptation of airline pilots with neurocirculatory dystonia].

In-depth clinical psychological investigation of airline pilots with neurocirculatory dystonia (n=194, mean age 38.57 +/- 0.85) and essentially healthy control pilots (n=183, mean age 38.4+/-0.92) revealed distinctive features in NCD pilots' mentality and behavior including personality, interpersonal communication, type of thinking, stress reaction, protection tactics, and mental dysfunctions. Psychic deadaptation such as symptoms of psychic asthenia, paranoia, depression, schizophrenia, and impulsive behavior had a negative effect on the clinical course and led to medical disqualification of

[Narcolepsy and the psychiatric tableau. A specific form of narcolepsy?].

Narcolepsy is a well-known hypersomnia. Nevertheless narcolepsy in which the hallucinatory component is unusually prominent may lead to a false diagnosis of schizophrenia syndrome. This aspect is illustrated by the case of Miss B. who appears like a psychotic patient without dissociation syndrome and with a hysterical personality. Are the narcoleptics with psychiatric disorders a peculiar sub-type of narcolepsy? Fourty-five percent of our eleven narcoleptics patients have an associated psychiatric disorder. Most of them are depressive. Surprisingly fourty percent of our patients are non-DR2 at

Phenomenology and psychiatric correlates of pseudocataplexy.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Pseudocataplexy is a rare functional neurological disorder that mimics cataplexy, pathognomonic for narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). We describe the psychiatric comorbidity and personality traits of patients with pseudocataplexy versus NT1 cases. METHODS: The case-control observational study enrolled consecutive patients with pseudocataplexy and a control group of age-matched consecutive NT1 patients. The diagnostic work-up included a structured interview, 48-hour polysomnography, multiple sleep latency test, cataplexy provoking test, and hypocretin-1 measurement in cerebrospinal fl

Depressive symptoms predict recurrence of atrial fibrillation after cardioversion.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether depressive symptoms and the type-D personality are predictive of early recurrence of atrial fibrillation (or atrial flutter; AF) after successful electrical cardioversion (CV). BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are associated with an adverse prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and ventricular arrhythmias. Anger and hostility have been shown to be predictive of development of AF. However, little is known about the effects of depression on AF. METHODS: Fifty-four patients with persistent AF complet
