High-Resolution Ultrasonography of the Transverse Cervical Nerve.

The transverse cervical nerve (TCN) is a superficial cutaneous branch of the cervical plexus that innervates the skin of the anterolateral neck. Therefore, it is exposed to injury in anterolateral cervical surgery, which can cause neuropathic pain. To provide a method with which to relieve patients' pain, this study aimed to evaluate the possibility of visualization, diagnostic assessment and blockade of the TCN with high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS). HRUS with high-frequency probes (15-22 MHz), guided ink-marking and consecutive dissection on both sides in nine fresh cadaver necks (n = 18) wa

Updates on Ultrasonography Imaging in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are life-threatening and are associated with >80% mortality when they rupture. Therefore, detecting these aneurysms before they rupture is critical. Ultrasonography is a non-invasive tool that is used for screening AAAs by measuring abdominal aorta diameter. A recent meta-analysis demonstrated the positive effects of ultrasonography. To date, aneurysm diameter is the most reliable predictor for aneurysm rupture and is used as a criterion for surgical intervention. However, some AAAs rupture at small diameters. Therefore, a better predictor for AAA rupture that…

How ultrasonography can contribute to diagnosis of craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this article was to provide an overview of ultrasound (US) techniques for the investigation of cranial sutures in infants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We first describe a high-resolution sonography technique and its limitations. We then analyze the reliability, effectiveness and role of ultrasonography in routine practice using a PubMed literature review. RESULTS: Ten studies reported excellent correlations between ultrasonography and 3D-CT. Cranial US for the diagnosis of a closed suture had 100% sensitivity in 8 studies and 86-100% specificity before the age of 12 months…

Musculoskeletal application and validation of speckle-tracking ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Diseased, injured, or dysfunctional skeletal muscles may demonstrate abnormal function and contractility. Currently, only few in vivo imaging techniques are able to characterize the contractile properties of muscle tissue. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that muscle strain can be tracked in two upper extremity skeletal muscles by speckle-tracking ultrasonography (STU) and correlates with isometric muscle contractions. METHODS: A convenience sample of 10 healthy, adult volunteers with normal shoulder function were tested. The 5 women and 5 men had a mean age of 45 years (ra…

Use of ultrasonography for differentiation between bullae and pneumothorax.

PURPOSE: Modern lung ultrasound (US) is mainly applied not only in critical care, emergency medicine, and trauma surgery, but also in pulmonary and internal medicine. In some cases, pneumothorax (PTX) distinguishes with bullous diseases. In this study, we aimed to discuss the success of US on detecting PTX versus bullae. METHODS: We performed a prospective blinded study. Patients underwent thorax computed tomography (CT) if bullae or pneumothorax could not be differentiated from the chest radiography. An emergency medicine specialist trained in lung US and unaware of x-ray and CT findings per

The Use of Point-of-Care Ultrasonography in Trauma Anesthesia.

Caring for the trauma patient requires an in-depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of trauma, the ability to rapidly diagnose and intervene to reverse the derangements caused by shock states, and an aptitude for the use of advanced monitoring techniques and perioperative point-of-care ultrasonography (P-POCUS) to assist in diagnosis and delivery of care. Historically, anesthesiology has lagged behind in wholly embracing this technology. P-POCUS has the potential to allow the trauma anesthesiologist to diagnose numerous injuries, quickly guide the placement of central vascular catheters and in…

Utility of ultrasonography in hair-thread tourniquet syndrome.

A 2-year-old girl presented with a 2-month history of an erythematous, indurated plaque with well-defined borders on the third toe of the right foot. Bedside high-resolution ultrasonography demonstrated a thickened epidermis overlying a hyperechoic focus within the dermis. Her clinical and sonographic presentation was in keeping with a foreign body causing hair-thread tourniquet syndrome. The foreign body was surgically extirpated without neurovascular sequelae. Ultrasonography expedited accurate diagnosis and is a promising adjunct to clinical evaluation for radiolucent foreign bodies.

Contribution of ultrasonography to the evaluation of peripheral nerve disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Although ultrasonographic (US) visualization of peripheral nerves is becoming more and more frequently used, there are few studies on its actual contribution to the diagnosis and management of patients with peripheral nerve disorders. METHODS: The electronic records of consecutive patients referred to our US laboratory over an eight-month period were retrospectively analyzed. The contribution of US examination to patient management was evaluated. RESULTS: Two hundred and thirty one consecutive patients (43% men) were analyzed. The US result was pathologic in 71% of patients. US pr

Evaluation of the Normal Tonsils in Pediatric Patients With Ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how well the tonsils can be viewed, in addition to echogenicity, using ultrasound, and to compare these results between children younger and older than the age of 3. METHODS: We evaluated the tonsils of 99 patients (72.0 ± 59.1 months) by ultrasound. Ultrasound scans of both the left and right side, in both the transverse and longitudinal planes, were obtained. Images were scored with one of four grades according to how well the tonsil border could be distinguished, 0 being the worst and 3 being the best. Grades 2 or 3 (>50% of the tonsil border was detectable) in both

Current applications of high-frequency ultrasonography in dermatology.

The era of ultrasounds in dermatology started in 1979, when pioneering use of 15 MHz by Alexander and Miller in measuring the skin thickness was introduced. Since then, some new applications of high-frequency ultrasonography (HF-USG) have emerged providing the clinicians with an extra hand in their everyday practice. The main advantages of HF-USG include the possibility of real-time imaging, measurements of morphological and physiological aspects of the skin, safety associated with the use of non-ionizing media as well as the lack of contraindications to its performance. Currently the main cli…
