We analyse the first 174 patients treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and their follow-up results. Average age was 57 years. Intraoperative cholangiography was not done in anyone. Conversion rate into other forms of intervention was 6.3%. The rate of common bile duct injury has been null. Total morbidity was 6.3%. The common investigations done were pure tone audiometry, electronystagmography, X-ray of the internal auditory meatus, CT-scan of the internal auditory meatus and X-ray of the cervical spine. Most human movements are structured in units consisting of a few seconds. This phenomenon may be based upon an inherent central nervous rhythm. The question of this study was whether the movements of children born deaf and blind are structured in a similar way. On a film cutting table, 233 movements were analyzed frame by frame. Between 1978 and 1992, 5310 eyes in 4317 cases were treated by laser photocoagulation at our clinic. Argon, krypton and dye lasers with slit lamp microscope were used 7556 times for 4446 eyes. Main indications included diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinal break and glaucoma. For treatment of these diseases, argon blue-green and green laser were chosen in majority of cases. The status of chronic ventilator-assisted children admitted to university hospitals in Japan was investigated. Of 81 university hospitals which responded to the survey, 52 hospitals had admitted 102 patients requiring chronic ventilatory support. More than 60% of the patients were suffering from neurologic disorders. An investigation on the use of psychotropic drugs in a Swiss university psychiatric hospital shows that compared with other drug surveys drugs were prescribed to relatively fewer patients and polypharmacy was used in less than 50% of the patients. The most frequently administered drugs were neuroleptics, among which, surprisingly. Clozapine ranked first. Antidepressants were prescribed in relatively low doses. A drug survey like ours can provide a basis for the critical discussion of prescribing habits.

Two hundred and four cases of primary postpartum haemorrhage were compared with the same number of normal post-partum mothers, during a period of two years at a University Hospital in Ilorin, Nigeria. The ileal pouch-anal anastomosis has become a practical alternative to proctocolectomy for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and polyposis coli. To evaluate its success, the Emory University Affiliated Hospital experience from February 1984 to March 1989 was retrospectively reviewed. There were a total of 50 patients identified; 84 per cent had ulcerative colitis, and 16 per cent had polyposis coli (familial polyposis and Gardner's syndrome). Female university students (n = 241) visiting the Student Health Center participated in a study concerning sexual behavior (study I). University Medical Center in Jacksonville initiated a screening program for maternal serum alphafetoprotein (MSAFP) in October 1987. Women with both high and low values were recalled for testing. During the first two years, neural tube and other birth defects including cystic hygroma and gastroschisis were detected. No chromosomal abnormalities were found. The program meets the recommendation of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to offer MSAFP testing to all pregnant women. Pregnant women in other areas of Florida could receive services through similar programs.
