[Hyperoxaluria and renal calculi].

Urolithiasis is one of the most frequent causes of morbidity in developed countries and its incidence is close to 5%. In our experience, 67.4% of urinary stones contain calcium oxalate as the main component, and hyperoxaluria plays an important role in the pathophysiology of this type of stone. The mechanisms responsible for the increment in urinary excretion of oxalate could involve oxalic acid synthesis. This increase could be due either to an increment of its endogenous formation or to an exogenous load of its precursors. Furthermore, an increased intestinal oxalate absorption is a frequent…

Nutrition and lower urinary tract disease in cats.

Lower urinary tract disease occurs commonly in cats and is often associated with crystal-related disease. Dietary modification is beneficial in managing some of these diseases, including idiopathic cystitis, urolithiasis, and urethral matrix-crystalline plugs. Altering dietary formulation may result in decreasing urinary concentrations of crystallogenic compounds, increasing urinary concentrations fo crystallogenic inhibitors, and diluting urine composition.

Unusual complication of a urinary stone in a child: spontaneous rupture of the renal pelvis with the migration of calculus into the retroperitoneum.

Spontaneous perforation of the renal pelvis and extravasation of urine into the perinephric space is an extremely rare condition in childhood. It is mostly related to underlying congenital urinary tract abnormalities and caused by urolithiasis or infection in the setting of urinary obstruction. Here, we report a case of an 18-month-old female patient with rupture of the renal pelvis by an extruded kidney stone and its management.

[Phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) deficiency--molecular and clinical aspects of dihydroxyadeninuria].

The lack of purine salvage enzyme, adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT), is a rare genetic defect that leads to excessive excretion of 2,8-dihydroxyadenine in urine. Due to its low solubility and nephrotoxicity, the defect may result in urolithiasis and renal failure. This review article describes genetic, biochemical and biophysical basis of the disease called dihydroxyadeninuria, as well as clinical problems of diagnosis and treatment.

[Clinical, laboratory, and functional characteristic of patients with bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with disturbances of oxalic acid metabolism].

We studied the role of oxalate release through the airways as a potential injurious factor in the development of inflammation, bronchial obstruction and cough syndrome (respiratory oxalosis). Detection of oxalates in bronhcoalveolar lavage fluid and daily urine is the most valuable method for diagnostics of oxalates. Systemic effects, such as cholelithiasis, urolithiasis, and spinal osteochondrosis are characteristic clinical signs of respiratory oxalosis, besides purely respiratory symptoms.

[Nephrogenic adenoma of the ureter: a case report].

A 27-year-old male with nephrogenic adenoma of the ureter complicating urolithiasis is reported. Nephrogenic adenoma of the ureter is extremely rare, and this case is the sixth reported in Japan. The lesion was found at the site of the stone in the left ureter. Histopathologically, the tumor consisted of ducts resembling uriniferous tubules, and no signs of malignancy were noted. The cause of nephrogenic adenoma is considered to be metaplastic reaction to stimulation by stones and inflammation.

Interleukins in Urological Diseases.

Interleukins (ILs) are a group of cytokines that regulate immune responses and inflammation, playing important roles in the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of urological diseases. This review provides an analysis of the involvement of interleukins in bladder cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), renal cell carcinoma (RCC), urinary tract infections (UTIs), interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), and urolithiasis. ILs regulate immune cell activity and mediate tumor progression, immune evasion, and inflammation, making them valuable biomarkers and therapeutic targets. E…

Inherited conditions resulting in nephrolithiasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prevalence of pediatric urolithiasis is increasing, which is definitively visible in increasing numbers of presentations in emergency or outpatient clinics. In pediatric patients, a genetic or metabolic disease has to be excluded, so that adequate treatment can be installed as early as possible. Only then either recurrent stone events and chronic or even end-stage kidney disease can be prevented. RECENT FINDINGS: The genetic background of mostly monogenic kidney stone diseases was unravelled recently. In hypercalcuria, for example, the commonly used definition of idiopathic…

Hydronephrosis in the course of ureteropelvic junction obstruction: An underestimated problem? Current opinions on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment.

Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) causes a reduction in the urine flow from the renal pelvis into the ureter. Untreated UPJO may cause hydronephrosis, chronic infection or urolithiasis and will often result in progressive deterioration of renal function. Most cases of UPJO are congenital; however, the disease can be clinically silent until adulthood. Other causes, both intrinsic and extrinsic, are acquired and include urolithiasis, post-operative/inflammatory/ischemic stricture, fibroepithelial polyps, adhesions and malignancy. In the past, the most frequent symptom of UPJO in neonates…

Urinary calculus in Zambia: its incidence and relationship to Schistosoma haematobium infection and vesicovaginal fistula.

Radiological, cystoscopic and histological observations were made on 41 cases of urinary stones in a hospital in Zambia. The results of biochemical analysis of 31 of these stones are presented. The possible role of Schistosoma haematobium in the causation of urinary stones has been analysed; associated schistosomiasis was diagnosed in 17 cases (41.4%). It is concluded that there is no significant causal association between the two disorders and urolithiasis is an uncommon disease in Zambians.

[Clinical problems in urinary obstruction (author's transl)].

It is difficult to define and diagnose urinary obstruction in a meaningful way only by radiographic methods and without involving a urodynamic concept. Urinary infection, urolithiasis and elevated arterial blood pressure are the most common complications found with urinary obstruction. In 70 patients with obstruction of the pelviureteral junction we found infection in 15.7 percent, lithiasis in 27 percent, and arterial hypertension in 27 percent.

Large stone in neobladder: percutaneous neocystolithotomy.

This article presents the percutaneous management of a large 8 cm neobladder calculus in a 27-year-old male with a history of bladder exstrophy, augmentation cystoplasty, and Mitrofanoff conduit. Urolithiasis presents a heavy burden in patients with urinary diversion, with reported rates of up to 52% and recurrence rates approaching 63% following intervention. In addition to recurrent infections and pain, the unique environment of a neobladder encourages significant calculi growth, necessitating repeat complex surgery. In this patient, his prior open surgery, complex anatomy and reliance on th…

Deferasirox at therapeutic doses is associated with dose-dependent hypercalciuria.

Deferasirox is an oral iron chelator used widely in the treatment of thalassemia major and other transfusion-dependent hemoglobinopathies. Whilst initial long-term studies established the renal safety of deferasirox, there are now increasing reports of hypercalciuria and renal tubular dysfunction. In addition, urolithiasis with rapid loss of bone density in patients with β thalassemia major has been reported. We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study enrolling 152 adult patients comprising of β thalassemia major (81.5%), sickle cell disease (8%), thalassemia intermedia (2%), HbH disease (6.5…
